As you can tell the hounds enjoyed the Turkey Mince and Venison a lot more than the fish!
Look at all those happy hounds! ❤️
Tommy Update 4 -
Tommys Teeth and Castrate has been signed off from the vet- he has recovered so so well considering his age!
They have booked his final vaccine booster in the 2 weeks time, and in those 2 weeks we will be starting to I cooperate Harder foods back into his diet- however I’m sure Tommy will disagree as he is loving the fish, Meat etc he is being fed!
He is all stocked up on flea and worming treatments, we are currently working on getting all the excess fluff off him, which will be followed by another bath to get him back to White!
He also managed to persuade Katie and Sarah to have a a short stroll in Town! ❤️
Thanks for St Peter’s Vets for all the support- and thank you everyone for your kind words, donations and support! ✨
Dogs Vitals
It’s important to know what’s normal for YOUR dog as every dog will have slightly different Vitals and can help out if you ever think your dogs poorly, if you go to the vet and you are concerned tell them what their “ Normal Vitals at home are !
Heart Rate - beautifully demonstrated by Otis and Poppy, different sized dogs however always in the same place, To find there heart rate you need to have them ideally standing or laying on their side.
You should go to the top of their back leg just inside the groin as you can see in the video the vein is pulsing.
Hold down firmly always using your fingers never your thumb - a thumb has a beat if its own, so sometimes you feel your heart instead.
Then once you have the beat may have to move around a bit to find it , stopwatch 15 seconds on the clock!
Count until the 15 seconds is over, however many beats you counted in 15 seconds times it by 4 to make it up to what would be a minute.
A normal range for a resting heart rate is between 60- 140 times a minute, the larger they breed the slower the heart rate. If they are young or a puppy expect their heart rate to be higher!
However after exercise this can go above 160bpm
Have one recording for relaxing and one recording for after exercise, you will need to conduct 2/3 tests for both of these to find the average, X2 checks a week for 2/3 weeks!
Gum/ tongue colour - check regularly so you can see their normal! A healthy gum should be a pinky colour, however some breeds of dogs could have darker gums/ tongues- so don’t panic!
A change in gum/ Tongue colour can mean a lot of different things, some we have listed in the video, but please don’t panic by a slight change, it’s just helpful to know as a base where they normally sit! If you are ever concerned call the vet!
Capillary refill time- ( CRP)
Process-
1 - press the gum firmly with your finger for 2-3 seconds.
2- Let go with your finger, the gum should be white as you let go, ho
Fun in the sun! Here’s a few clips of the kennel hounds enjoying the warm weather the past couple weeks ☀️
Tommy update 3!
Tommy went into surgery on Monday with the amazing Team at St Peter’s vets!
He had his castrate done, and 19 teeth extracted which wasn’t as many as it could have been!
Surgery went well and he was stable throughout he stayed overnight at the vets until Tuesday morning as they wanted to keep an eye on him and ensure no bleeding.
We picked him up from the vet Tuesday morning as he was a little stressed being somewhere new and of course in discomfort.
We got him back to the kennels and he was feeling rough for a couple of days, however Thursday evening he quiet happily went for a wonder around the kennels and ate properly for the first time since his operation.. he had been eating very small amount prior.
His diet is consisting of fish and trays of meat to not hurt his gums so all the sardines donated are helping him at the moment!
As you can see from the video he is back to his cuddly self, we didn’t get any videos in the middle section as he was feeling very poorly and sorry for himself.
Once he is fully recovered, and has his final check overs from the vet, in 3 weeks time, he will be up for adoption! ✨
Thank you again for all your support on Tommy as without you all we wouldn’t have been able to afford this surgery.
Love PGT ###
Natural fish treats for the hounds! It's safe to say it's either love or hate with these- just like marmite!! Some of the hounds loved them, and some hated them, and ended up on the floor! We will try again another day and we will be trying other things out with them so keep your eyes peeled!
Tommy Update 2-
Katie and Tommy headed to the vets yesterday for a Full Health check, Vaccinations and discussions about Tommys teeth- and of course lots of fuss by everyone!
Tommy has been booked into the vets next week to have a castration done, and removal of his teeth. At this time they are unsure of how many teeth will need to be removed and how many can be saved- everyone’s fingers are crossed that he will only need one procedure however the vets aren’t sure.
Tommy is now up to date on all Vaccinations, Flea and Worming Treatment, and has had a lovely bath!
He has got some medication to start prior to his surgery to help with recovery, and stop any infections as they are concerned about his gums to the state of his teeth.
We will keep you all updated once Tommy is out of Surgery and recovering, but for now if you could all keep Tommy in your thoughts! ✨❤️
Seb enjoyed a well deserved day trip to Starbucks today! Starbucks - Liphook, A3 North and of course he had a pupachino! Day outs like this are not only great to help them get out of the kennel for a little bit and give a change of scenery but also help us understand how they travel in the car, how they are in busier environments, meeting new people and hearing lots of new sounds! ❤️
