Mozart has come a long way since I first started working with him.

His recall has come on heaps, he navigates busy areas with much more ease, settles well in cafes and queues and has allowed more humans into his inner circle and is just an all round lovely boy! 😍

Some recent sessions with Frank.

Working on some reactivity and desensitisation to a new harness and he is absolutely smashing it all!

I am always proud of the owners I work with but especially so when they trust me completely and trust the process and reap the rewards ❀️

The importance of good Nutrition and varying proteins.

Did you know 70% of a dogs immune system is in their gut?

Good Nutrition and digestion is crucial for fighting diseases and every day ailments. So how do you get there? Raw Feeding is a brilliant way to ensure your dogs are eating a balanced diet but it's important that proteins are varied.

As a Nutritionist I see so many dogs with intolerances and allergies and the most common intolerances are chicken and beef (80% of all dogs I have assessed)

It's why it's so important to make sure you are offering your dog varying proteins each week. The digestive system is strengthened by consuming a varied diet and leads to a higher rate of nutrient absorption which in turn leads to overall better health.

You will often hear me in the shop talking about "novel" proteins. These are proteins that are rarely fed and in turn less likely to cause a dogs immune system to create an overactive response.

Dogs are rarely born with intolerances to food but are sometimes born with allergies which are normally picked up quickly. Intolerances occur when dogs have been consistently given a singular protein source or an incredibly high amount of that singular protein through main meals and treats. Constant exposure to this protein results in the dogs body finding it hard to absorb and break down the protein and the immune system starts to treat it as harmful and an overactive response starts.

Signs of intolerances are:
- Itchy ears, paws, body
- Sore skin
- Rash
- Saliva Staining
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Red ears or eyes
- Excessive Flatulence

You can stop a dog developing a protein intolerance by varying what you feed them. For dogs who aren't on exclusion diets this could be 3 different proteins per week.

It's really important to remember that different proteins offer different nutrients, amino acids and health benefits.

Chicken and Turkey are lean white meats and essential for building muscle and are gentle on the gut.

Lamb and Beef are full of amino acids and vitamins which help create shiny coats and great skin.

Bone content is important for the minerals and calcium absorption.

A run down on what proteins offer your dog.

- Beef is full of Iron, Zinc and B Vitamins
- Chicken is full of Vitamins B3,B6 and B12
- Lamb is full of Omega 3, Vitamins B12, Zinc and Selenium.
- Duck is great for Vitamin B3 & B6, Omega 3 and Zinc
- Offal Vitamins A, B2, B6, B12, riboflavin, folate and Iron.
- Tripe for the gastric juices & amino acids.
- Turkey for Selnium and B Vitamins
- Salmon for Omega 3
- Venison for Iron, Folate and Zinc

It's worth noting how important some pure green Tripe is for a dogs diet, it's a natural probiotic and should be in a dogs meal at least once per week. I know it doesn't smell very nice but it's a good immune booster!

Of course feeding a varied protein source also prevents meal time boredom.
