Welcome Colm:

A huge welcome to our newest team member Colm who has joined our Veterinary team.

Colm hails from Northern Ireland and studied here in Liverpool.
He spent the last 6 months travelling around Southern Africa where he worked helping elephants and human babies amongst many other adventures.

Colm loves a good Guiness (no surprise) Chai tea (slight surprise) and anything to do with Italian food (perfecto).

He shares his walks with Molly a German Pointer cross who we are all desperate to meet.

Colm has already won us over with his kindness and compassion, his passion for Veterinary medicine and the wellbeing of the pets and their families under his care.

Colm, we are delighted you chose us for this stage of your career and we hope you'll be very happy with us

Sabbatical Day One:

I have taken a break from running the clinic.
This is day one of that break.
I barely slept last night, I'm worried about the team, the clients, our pets.
What if I'm not there?
But that's exactly why I need to take a step away for a few months.
For the last 5 years I've worked in and on the business 24/7, day and night.
I've recognised the toll its taken and I've seen colleagues pay the ultimate price for not listening to the signs of burnout.
I'm not burned out, but I've also found it impossible to switch off, and I know that's not good for anyone, myself, my family, my team, our pets.
I'm going to take 6 months to rest, to help my daughter with her gcses and to hopefully to see Orcas swimming wild. To rebalance
I know the clinic is in the best possible hands of Simon our Practice Manager, and Heidi our Head Nurse who will uphold the core values of The Liverpool Vets, and they know where I am if they need me.
I hope you understand and I promise I will be back healing pets and keeping them happy and safe for you from early September

Learning, Evolving, Encouraging:

Emma, our deputy Practice Manager joined us from a background of horses.
She quickly proved to us that not only is she an exceptional team player, but that her fabulous organisational skills and absolute determination to learn and to develop herself, made it straightforward for us to promote her to her current role.

She is enrolled on a management course and is flying through that aswell.
Simon, our Practice Manager (above) has taken to his mentoring role with her exceptionally well and the two of them keep our admin and front of house in order.

I'm truly so proud of this woman. She is a delight to work along side, our team is all the stronger for having her in it, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for her.

Thank you Emma for being an utter gem!

Fluffy's New Medicine:

Fluffy is a very old lady who has recently developed Diabetes.

Usually that would mean injections twice daily and lots of needles to check her blood whilst we try to stabilise her blood sugar with insulin. Plus significant costs and appointments for her Mum, never mind learning to give injections to Fluffy.

But, there is a new medicine in town, and its proving to be a game changer:

It's a liquid medicine called Senvelgo. Fluffy takes her medicine by mouth once a day, and within a week her blood sugar levels were normalised.

That's incredible.

We are delighted so far with this drug, and we are certain that Fluffy and her Mum are too. I know the photo doesn't do her joy justice but we are all jumping for joy here!

This is the bone!

This week we worked together to get this awful, life threatening bone removed from Dior.

Our Vet Allison, alongside specialist surgeon Catherine, were able, incredibly, to get the bone out using endoscopy to carefully locate and remove it ever so gently, without needing surgery.

This really was a triumph and the whole team were delighted.

Lucky dog!

Please please don't buy these bones for your dog.

Dog Treat Risks:

Some treats labelled as 'dog ham bone' can cause life threatening issues. This bone is sold in a major chain of stores.

This dog gobbled up such a dog treat, but managed to swallow some very large chunks which are now lodged in her chest, too big to pass into her stomach.

She is facing some significant and risky surgery, not to mention costly.

Please do not buy these ham bones for your dog. Cooked or processed bones of any kind are very dangerous indeed.

500 5 Star Reviews in 5 Years:

As we approach our 5th Birthday next week, I wanted to share a review we received this morning.

We have received over 500 5 star reviews since we opened which puts us well ahead of all practices in the city, and I wanted to both reflect and look ahead on this incredible achievement.

Sure we aren't perfect, and we have had some pretty negative feedback too, but we have always confronted it, and learned from it.

One thing I can tell you for certain is that every single person who works in this team is completely dedicated to your pet's welfare.

When new colleagues join, or even come for an interview, I make sure that they know that this practice really only has one core value:

We do what ever the right thing is to do for each and every pet.

The pet, given over to our care, comes first.

I'm sure, whatever else we may occasionally do less than perfectly, this core and central driving force, the one thing we turn up every day to deliver, is first and foremost in every decision we take and make.

5 years down the line, I cannot describe the immense pride I feel when we receive any 5 star review, even more so, when it's been whilst I've been away, or not directly involved in the case, because then I know, with literally all my heart, that my awesome team are on the very same page.

Thank you, to Anna, and every single client who took the time to give us a 5 star review. You light us up, you make us smile, you confirm that we are doing the right thing.

I am forever both grateful and humbled

Mr B's Big Day:

Today the tables are turned.
Today it's my own dog who is here at the Vets.
He has a tumour
I've asked my colleague and specialist surgeon to come in to operate, if its possible to operate.

So I wait outside whilst they work
In the operating theatre where I normally work, saving lives.
Im outside,
Feeling how I know our clients feel when they hand their previous pets over to me.

Soon I'll know if surgery is possible or if the best is to leave him be, and enjoy the days and weeks we have left.

HRT Alert:

Are you or anyone you know, who has a dog, on HRT?

It's become clear that dogs absorb the hormones from your body through stroking and touching, and this can cause some significant side effects, specifically to female dogs.

In Daisy's case, we saw really marked signs as if she was in season, and she is spayed:
Swelling of the v***a
Attracting male dogs
Swelling of her mammary glands
Changed behaviour.
In Poppy's case:
Aggression to people

Once their owner stopped her HRT, all these signs subsided.

This is an evolving issue and we are making sure we ask, when taking a history for your pet. If you are worried or have any questions, please pop in to see us

XL Bulldogs :

We are privileged to care for many XL Bulldogs in the practice.

These dogs are, in my opinion, and based on 25 years experience, super friendly, almost d***y like in seeking affection, and I never approach one in the clinic with trepidation.

Of course, there can be an exception, as there can with any and every breed. I've been bitten badly needing hospital attention and surgery, twice in my 25 year career, once by a Husky and once by a Sharpei. Not a Rottie, not a pit bull, not a Corsa, not an XL.

I helped to set up the Merseyside Dog Safety Partnership to help keep people, specifically children, safe from dog bites.

The solution?

Education and responsible ownership. Understanding what a dog needs to live in a fulfilled and safe relationship with humans. Understanding their triggers and their signals, providing for their mental and physical needs.

I've learned through close observation that dogs exactly as humans, have characteristics and traits from birth, some more confident, some more anxious, that stay with them.
Their experiences in life then determine how they navigate the world through their inbuilt default personalities.

This is the bit we can do well, not so well, or terribly.

It is not the breed

It is the creed with which you embrace your responsibility when you choose to share your life with a dog

Holes In Cats' Teeth:

We love cats, but they do do some crazy and unhelpful things.

One is developing holes in their teeth which are painful and cause us to need to take them out.

This is little Cuddles who was in with us this week. We had seen the tell tale signs in her mouth, red gum tissue over lying the teeth and a history of her being less keen to eat her food.

Once that gum tissue was removed under general anaesthetic we clearly saw the problem and the teeth were removed.

Even the next day, her owner said she was eating better than she had for ages.

We know how hard it is to brush your cat's teeth but there are some things we can suggest to help and how go check at home

Tomorrow Show Day!

The Liverpool One Dog Show is on tomorrow at Chavasse Park.

They've planned a fantastic afternoon with competitions, fancy dress dogs, dog training, doggy treats and equipment like harnesses.

There will be some short talks:
How to keep your dog happy, healthy and safe in Liverpool - by me
How to look after your dog's coat- by Ryan
What we do for the stray pets in our city - Lesley

Liverpool is such an incredible and dog friendly city, and this is our opportunity to party with you.

Unsurprisingly all the spaces for the competitions are fully booked, we are expecting over 300 doggies, but you are still welcome to bring your pooch with you for some fun.

Literally, with or without a dog, this is a celebration of everything canine and we very much hope to see you there
