With the possible heatwave this week have you familiarised yourself with the main signs of heat stroke in dogs? 🌡

Dogs don’t tolerate high temperatures as well as humans. Because they only have sweat glands in their feet and around their nose, they are less efficient at cooling themselves down.

Is your dog panting and restless or are you worried your dog won’t stop panting? These among the early signs of heat stroke.
Other symptoms of heat stroke in dogs include rapid breathing, barking or whining, excessive thirst, excessive drooling, and increased heartbeat.

If you are worried your pet is suffering from heat stroke this is an emergency and we would advising calling your vets as soon as possible!

Our vet and nurse have just attended to a possible injured tabby cat on Agar Road.
When our vets arrived they could not see any visible injuries however when they went to do an in depth examination of the cat it got up and jumped over a near by fence.
We are hopeful that the cat has no injuries but if we can ask any clients who are local to this area to check their gardens to ensure the cat is not trapped and injured to be on the safe side.

Sometimes our vets will recommend some blood sampling for your pet and you may be wondering what the blood sample tells us? 🩸

The purpose of blood sampling is to obtain information that cannot be captured by just examining your pet. We get a better idea of how our pets internal organs are functioning and can even sometimes pick some illness up before clinical signs present them selves!

To prepare your pet for their blood sample visit the Vet may recommend gentle fasting. This is when we advise you to starve your pet for 6 hours prior to the sample being taken. Fasting helps to clear the blood of lipemia (fatty droplets that appear after eating). Lipemia can effect our pets blood results making them unreliable.
We will encourage you to allow your pet access to their water bowl but may ask you give them plenty of opportunity to empty their bladder before their appointment, especially if they are being hospitalised for a procedure.

When your pet goes home after their blood sample has been taken you will notice a bandage wrapped around their leg. This is a pressure bandage and it is to prevent a haematoma forming (a collection of blood located outside of the vessel). Your Vet or Vet Nurse will instruct you to remove this bandage around 30-60 minutes after it has been applied.

If your pet is booked in for any blood sampling and you are worried or have any questions just get in touch and we can make sure you are informed as possible prior to your appointment! 💉

Kennel cough is a highly infectious disease in dogs that causes cold and flu like symptoms in our pets. It’s the common name given to infectious bronchitis in dogs.

There are lots of strains of kennel cough, which means that dogs can pick up the infection multiple times throughout their lives and there is no lasting immunity even if your dog has had Kennel Cough before.

Fortunately vaccinations are available which reduces our pets chances of contracting Kennel Cough. These are free of charge to all of our Complete Wellness Plan patients! 🤧

Cats thrive on mental and physical stimulation. They are natural explorers who, in the wild, would hunt or scavenge for food. In some cases, cats lacking proper mental stimulation can develop behaviour issues.

To help you avoid this, we’ve listed easy and affordable methods of keeping your cat's mind busy.

1. Boxes
As you’ve probably found out, cats love boxes! Take a look around the house, can you turn any of the empty boxes you have lying around into cat toys?

Egg Cartons:

Anything with a simple open/close mechanism is ideal. Put treats inside, shut the box and watch your cat figure out how to get them!

Cardboard Boxes:

Cats love hiding in boxes, not to mention jumping on top of them. Why not arrange boxes into a kitty jungle gym? You could put it together in minutes and keep your cat happy for hours.

Poke holes in the boxes and put treats inside – whenever you can, it’s great to combine feed time with play time.

2. Teach Your Cat Tricks

Contraire to popular opinion, dogs aren’t the only pets that can learn tricks! You can teach your cat a number of tricks in the same way. Just as you would with a dog, always use positive reinforcement (clicker training, for example) and reward them with tasty treats. Again, feed time and play time mixed together works wonders!

3. Interactive Toys

This will help strengthen the bond between you and your cat as by playing together, you increase the number of positive experiences. A good example of an interactive toy is a wand, a.k.a. Catnip Teaser. They have strings, feathers and fabric, all of which will attract your cat’s attention and no doubt provide you with plenty of amusement, too!

4. Interactive Feeders

Problem solving toys and feeders are fantastic for enrichment, particularly for when you’re out of the house as your cat can play with them alone. There are a wide range of interactive feeders on the market, but it’s possible to make your own out of boxes.

Don’t forget, all Complete Wellness Plan members get 25% off Pet Shop sales.

Can you think of more cat enrichment games? If yes, let us know!

Ticks latch onto their hosts and, like fleas, feed on their blood. Though initially they can be difficult to see, a tick can swell up to the size of a pea once it’s had a large blood meal.

Ticks thrive in the warmer months so be on the lookout and check your pet’s fur regularly. They can also spread diseases; the most common is Lyme disease. If you find that your pet is afflicted with a tick, contact your vet for advice.

Try not to worry too much! So long as you administer all relevant treatments with the correct frequency, your pets will be able to enjoy their summer itch-free and illness-free!

If anything does go wrong, or your pet seems unwell in any way … as always … contact us right away. You can never be too careful!

Flea and tick treatment is free of charge to all of our Complete Wellness Plan members!
