β‘οΈ Next up for Vet Nurse Awareness Week is Loren, one of our Student Vet Nurse's. With Loren is the lovely Lawrence getting plently of love and attention after being a good boy for his blood pressure readings!
π¦ 'I studied Zoology at university, and then spent 6 years working as an accountant before following my love of animals and entering the veterinary world.
πΎ I joined the practice in January 2023 as a kennel care assistant and started studying towards my Veterinary Nurse qualification last September. Iβm nearly at the end of my first year of the two year apprenticeship course and am loving putting everything I learn in college into practice at Woolton.
π©» I really enjoy helping to prepare all the animals for their procedures and getting involved with X-rays and lab work. I love that each day is different and there is always something new to learn!
π©π»ββοΈ Iβm looking forward to becoming fully qualified and to see where my career takes me. I think in the future Iβd like to undertake additional certificates in anaesthesia and emergency and critical care.'

β‘οΈ How To Muzzle Train Your Dog with Vet Alex and Amber, part 4 (final)
πΎ As you have seen through our videos, muzzle training takes a steady and calm approach. Itβs not a process you can rush. Amber was a pretty easy candidate for muzzle training as she is super food motivated and works very well with me. Your dog may not be as quick to accept the training but thatβs ok, take it at their pace.
πΆ The key things to remember are to use plenty of treats and rewards, make the process a fun training thing just like any other skill you have taught your dog. If you meet a tough part in the training, pause and take a step back. Then restart your training at your last successful step, after a few days break.
πΏ Muzzle training can be used for many reasons and public perception of this is changing. We would recommend muzzle training all dogs as this ensures that if they were sore or stressed then a muzzle wonβt add to this concern. Muzzle training can prevent dogs from scavenging on walks, prevent dogs from catching wildlife (if they are fast enough) as well as being a safety measure in case of sensitive or reactive dogs.
π If you want to start the process of muzzle training but would like some 1:1 advice then please book an appointment with one of our team.
β‘ Part 3 of How To Muzzle Train Your Dog with Vet Alex and Amber:
πΆ When you first clip the muzzle on, itβs important to only leave it on for a short time and then build up the length of time slowly. Then we can start to increase the gap between rewards so they are delivered intermittently and not constantly.
πΎ Please donβt be disheartened if your dog is more hesitant and takes longer to move through the steps. Every dog is an individual. Keep your training sessions short and try to train multiple times a week. Amber makes it look easy but sheβs a breed that is easy to train, incredibly food motivated and is used to me doing βvettyβ things with her.
π If your dog has had previous experiences of muzzles you may need to spend some time with them just seeing the muzzle, taking treats from near the muzzle and being allowed to sniff and investigate it.
πΎ Once again donβt hesitate to reach out for support if you need it, we are here to help. If thereβs any particular issue youβre experiencing or something youβd like us to demonstrate more slowly or in a different way then let us know. Amber will be very willing to make some more videos for you.
Stay tuned for the final instalment, part 4! π
β‘ Muzzle training with Alex and Amber part 2!
πΎ Once you and your dog feel comfortable with the initial steps from part 1 then you are ready to progress to part 2.
πΎ The principles are the same. Positive training using rewards (treats/praise/play).
We move at a pace that suits our own individual dog. If you hit a stumbling block go back a stage and move through the steps more slowly. If a training session isnβt going to plan, stop and try again another day.
πΎ If your dog is particularly noise sensitive then you will need to get them used to the sound of the clip on the muzzle opening and closing. This may take a few training sessions. You can see in the video that Amber notices the sound and pauses for a second but isnβt overwhelmed or scared.

Part 3 coming soon!
πΎ Muzzle training can feel like a daunting idea for dog owners, part of this stems from our perception of muzzles. Itβs important to remember our dogs donβt have any perception of what muzzles are and this is why muzzle training in a positive way can be easy and fun. Muzzles are just tools we can use and have many applications including keeping humans safe and preventing scavenging.
πΎ Important things to remember when muzzle training:
β‘ It needs to be fun and there must be plenty of rewards (food/praise/play). If your dog isnβt relaxed and positively engaging in a training session then stop and try again another day. A negative experience will cause a bigger set back than a gap in training.
β‘ Take it slowly. Every dog will need a slightly different pace. Dogs that have had previous negative experience of muzzles may take a little longer to win over. If your dog struggles or shows any signs of distress then go back a step and take things more slowly. You may need a higher value reward if your dog isnβt progressing.
β‘The aim is to get the dog to come to the muzzle and not move the muzzle towards the dog.
πΎ Ideas for treats can be kibble/cheese/chicken pieces. Or you can use primula cheese spread, kong paste, peanut butter (check no xylitol on ingredient list) or pate smeared on the inner surface of the muzzle. Just be mindful of your dogs dietary needs (i.e. allergies) and reduce the quantity for food in their meals on days where you have done some training.
πΎ Remember we are all here to help you, so if you are struggling with your dog or need some more specific information then get in touch with us.

π± As those of you who have owned kittens will know, they love to play! Playing with kittens is important for their development, and it allows them to express their natural hunting behaviours. The opportunity to play is just as important for adult cats too as it provides them with mental stimulation, as well as being a great way to keep them fit and active. If your cat or kitten is kept indoors, this is even more important to ensure all of their mental and physical needs are met.
πΎ There are various ways you can play with your cat or kitten, including cat toys and common items you may have at home such as cardboard boxes. You can find some great tips on the Cats Protection website: https://www.cats.org.uk/cats-blog/how-to-encourage-your-cat-to-play
πΎThis adorable little boy is Billy who was in for his second vaccination recently. As you can see, he had a great time in the consult room playing with a wrapper! π»
