During November 2024 a National Antibiotic Amnesty is being held by vets, doctors
and pharmacists. Our practice is taking part in the antibiotic amnesty and we are
encouraging clients to return any unused or out of date antibiotics to us for safe
disposal.

What to do if you have leftover or unused antibiotics:
o Return them to your vet practice for safe disposal
o Inappropriate disposal of unused antibiotics could contribute to antimicrobial
resistance and pollute the environment through waterways, affecting our
wildlife
o Don’t ever give your pet, or any pet for which they haven’t been prescribed,
left-over or out of date antibiotics. Using antibiotics when not needed could
risk side effects, delay an accurate diagnosis for your pet, mean that your
pets condition may not be treatable, and contributes to antimicrobial
resistance
Our practice is taking part in the antibiotic amnesty this November. Clients can
return any unused or out of date antibiotics to us for safe disposal.

Our practice is taking part in the 2024 Antibiotic Amnesty. Throughout November
2024 we are asking pet owners to return any unused or leftover antibiotic
medications to us for safe disposal. Please drop off any unused medications to us at
the practice. You can hand them in to a vet, nurse or the reception team. This
medication might be left-over from a recent prescription, antibiotics that you didn’t
need or out-of-date medication. Let’s keep antibiotics working, together!

For dogs consider shifting walks foward to be earlier in the day while it is still light out to avoid them being scared by any unexpected fireworks. Even during the day, be on the look (and listen) out for stray fireworks, and consider restricting off lead time to secure enclosed areas only, just in case.

Tip 3: Protect them

Microchip your pets so you can be reunited in case they are frightened and escape outside. It is a legal requirement for dogs and cats to be chipped, but remember exotic pets can also be chipped to help them find their way home in the event of an escape.

We're only a few weeks away from hibernation time for Horsfield, Greek Spur-Thighed and Hermann's tortoises.

Ensuring your tortoise is happy and healthy before hiberation is key to a sucessful hibernation period - which is why we are offering pre-hibernation checks. This includes a clinical examination and health assessment with our exotics team, and a faecal examination to screen for parasites, all for just £60.

We would recommend booking these as soon as possible, so if any problems are found we have plenty of time to treat ahead of the winter. Hibernation usually starts mid-late October, which means we only have a few weeks left to ensure your pet is as healthy and happy as they can be.

This month the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) is changing their rules around pet birds, and is requiring registration of pet birds which fall under the following criteria

If you keep 49 or less birds, you need to register them here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/register-as-a-keeper-of-less-than-50-poultry-or-other-captive-birds

Psittacines (parrots, budgies, cockatiels, etc) and Passeriformes (canaries, finches) are exempt from registering but ONLY if they are always kept indoors. This means all pet chickens, ducks etc need to be registered, even if you only have a few in your back garden.

If you keep 50 or more birds of any species, you need to register them here:https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/652565a1244f8e000d8e734f/Compulsory_registration_to_be_a_keeper_of_50_or_more_poultry_or_other_captive_birds__IRA81_.pdf

And you will have to request a County Parish Holding (CPH) here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/apply-for-a-county-parish-holding-cph-number

In case of any questions or if you are concerned about your birds health, please contact our practice to arrange a consult with our exotics service.

We have some extra availability for neutering appointments in the next few weeks. To book in give us a call.

If you're not already registered with us we will need to get the medical history of your pet from any vets they have visited before to make sure we have all their relevant medical information to hand when we see them.

It's less than a month to bonfire night - are you fireworks ready?

If your pet needs medications to get through this period please give us a call nice and early in case they need to be seen before we can dispense a repeat.

For pets who have never had medications before, if you are worried about how they are going to cope with the upcoming fireworks, please give us a call. Our vets are happy to discuss a range of options, and we will be able to give advice on appropriate rescue medications for this year, as well as thinking about longer term management plans for the future.
