I am so lucky to be able to hold my classes at Hope School. Secure parking? Tick. Accessible indoor facility? Tick. Secure outdoor training area? Tick. And, as I'm a member of the APDT, you can be sure your trainer uses methods backed by science and who wants the best for both you and your dog.

I'm working from home today and have a Zoom meeting in 10 minutes so should fire up the old lap top but my 3 dogs are all fast asleep and I'm loath to disturb them! Aethel, at nearly 11 yrs old will open 1 eye, scowl, and go back to sleep. Sol, nearly 8 yrs, will leap away and declare this as the best day EVER (every day is the best day ever, according to Sol). Eric will jump up because Sol jumped up and there may be food involved somewhere. Bless them!

Please remember that socialising a puppy is about giving them opportunities for new experiences at a distance and pace they are comfortable with. Some dog day care offer puppy socialising parties but if your people feels either overwhelmed or over excited, they've had a negative experience. Take it at your puppy's speed and be their champion.

You may have seen the RSPCA's item about an American man calling himself The Dog Daddy coming to the UK to run workshops. The RSPCA are right to say he uses methods and equipment that cause pain and fear. He says he helps people with aggressive dogs. However, what he doesn't do is help the aggressive dog. When a dog is displaying aggressive behaviour it's a cry for help, 'I need to make that scary person/dog go away and this is the only way I know how.' Then along comes this man who seeks to cause the dog SO MUCH pain and fear that the dog, in that moment, gives up. It appears miraculously cured. It isn't. And at some point in the future that behaviour will show itself again but even worse because now the dog thinks it is fighting for its life. The owner handed him a fearful dog and he handed back a ticking time bomb. If you need help ask your vet for referral to a qualified, accredited behaviourist who will help you and your dog by working on the cause of the fear, not the symptom.

The sweetener, Xylitol, may sometimes now be labelled as Birch Sugar (maybe to make it sound more natural and not the ultra processed ingredient it is?). In any case, it is still potentially LETHAL if a dog eats a food containing it. Please read ingredient lists!

I've just watched a video where people are invited to bark at their dogs. I wish I knew how to upload it here but if you do see it you're going to watch a LOT of dogs come close to biting their owners in the face. The owners of the dogs clearly think its hilarious. The dogs, equally clearly, do not. Don't do it. It won't end well!

My March courses are all booked up and I'm looking forward to supporting owners who want the best for their hairy friend. I always tell people to book early if they want a space as I fill so quickly so if you're interested go to my website and book that place!

Due to a cancellation I have a space on my Beginners' Course starting this week. If you fancy having more fun with your dog and learning more about each other, let me know!

Sol is sooo brave. He's hoping that if he doesn't look at Dame Judy, our Ninja hen, then maybe she won't notice him!

I've also heard the quote, 'Punishing a dog for growling is like taking the batteries out of a smoke alarm.' When a dog growls they're telling us they're worried. Thank them for letting you know then start working to help them feel sage.

Both ends of the lead need support. People come to classes because they want the best for their dog and dogs will try their best. When you see your dog having a light bulb moment because they understand it's the best feeling! It's a shock that there are still trainers who will use physical punishment on a dog. How on earth does that help the relationship between you?

14/07/2022

Dogs are social animals, of course, but that doesn't always mean they want you to mess up their hair!

To help with the cost of living crisis I have DROPPED the price of our courses. Our puppy course is now just £38 (was £50) and our Beginners' Course is £73 (was £100). We've done out best to help you do your best.

Today we went for a walk along the beach. 8 people and 7 dogs. We're a family of dog lovers. One of those dogs is Saffi, a Romanian Special Edition. She can be worried by new dogs but my niece and her partner have taken things slowly, found dogs she can relax with and today was a bit of a test! Well done, Marcy and Rosie for giving Saffi the time and space to develop.

Just finished the latest Beginners' Course. What a lovely group of people and dogs! From Luxen, the Cane Corso cuddle muffin, down to Elvis, the Pom with attitude, they all gave their owners ample reason to be proud.

Owners sometimes ask me whether their puppy or dog is the right weight. Well here's a handy video to let you check their condition yourself.

Just a quick reminder that walking dogs in heat can be dangerous for them. Their body temperature is higher than ours AND they're wearing a fur coat! Do some stuff with them at home such as search games, trick training and we can all keep our cool!

Calm down, relax, and enjoy these incredible animals we share our homes with.

Go to my website for details of classes. I'm here for both ends of the lead; for the puppy or dog who's trying to work out what it is that humans want, and the human who feels the responsibility for this soul they've brought into their home. You're both doing your best and I'm here to support you ❤

Scatter feeding is great for the dogs, they much prefer it to food in a bowl. This morning they were joined by Dame Judy, Audrey and Joyce, the hens, who were looking for the meal worms I had also scattered. Obviously, I monitor the dogs with the hens. Not long after this photo was taken Dame Judy objected to Aethel being too close to a particularly delicious meal worm and launched an attack. Only Aethel's dignity was hurt 😊

All classes are cancelled today. Thank you for understanding but it's way too hot and we don't want dogs meeting for the first time when they're hot and irritable! Keep your dogs safe. A few days at home won't harm and if you don't have an outdoor space walk them early morning or late evening. It's still forecast to be 25 degrees at 9 tonight!

Well aren't we popular! We've had lots of enquiries about our Beginners' Course so we've added an extra class on Tuesday, 20th July. So if you're one of those people who would love to be able to enjoy your walks with your dog on these long summer days, you know where to come! If your walks are ruined because your dog hasn't yet learned to walk on a loose lead but you can't let them off the lead because you're worried about them not coming back then you won't be alone. We're an embarrassment-free zone!

It's a warm day. Judith and Joyce, two of our hens, are supposed to be mowing the grass but have decided a dust bath is a better option. Eric agrees 😊

Delighted to say my evening classes can start again INDOORS on Tuesday, 18th May. Beginners' Course already full but there are places for puppies under 18 weeks at the start of the course at both 6 and 7 pm. Indoors! What luxury! And if the weather is good we can, of course, still make use of the secure car park and playground. Book via the website but remember these places go fast!
