With the weather like it is there are loads of heat stroke warnings for our dogs but not so many for our cats, but that doesn't stop us worrying about them!

So what are the risks of heat stroke in our feline friends and what can we do to help them?

🥵🐱 The first thing to know is that heat stroke is rare in cats. They tend to be very sensible in the hot temperatures and although many love to sunbathe, they don’t exert or exhaust themselves like dogs. I have been a vet for a long time and I have never seen a cat with heat stroke.

🥵🐱 Although it is sensible to keep them out of super hot areas of our houses, particularly conservatories, there is no real need, I feel, to prevent them from going outside. And for many shutting them in is likely to stress them out. If they start feeling too warm, most cats will move to a cooler area. Ensuring they have the ability and choice to do that is the key.

🥵🐱 Encouraging them to drink more is a good idea. My top tip is to freeze the spring water from tuna tins into ice cubes and put a couple in their water bowl. This not only cools the water, especially if you change it regularly, it also flavours it & makes them more likely to drink it.

🥵🐱 Some cats will be grateful for a cool mat, especially longer haired ones. But don’t be offended if they don’t use it, you know what cats are like! Other good cooling options are fans and frozen bottles of water wrapped in towels.

🥵🐱 Talking of thick and long coated cats, if this hot weather continues, they will be much more comfortable clipped off. There is no truth to the myth that a thick coat has natural cooling properties!

🥵🐱Using a pet safe sunscreen on white ears (and noses if they will allow it!), even if your cat isn’t a particular sun-worshiper, is a very good idea. Unfortunately, skin cancers triggered by sun damage aren’t uncommon.

Essentially, for our cats in the hot weather, it is not really about preventing heat stroke but more about just ensuring they have the ability to stay comfortable and get cooler if they need to.
