🐶 Letting Your Dog Pick Their Treats: Why It’s a Game Changer! 🎉
Ever wondered why your dog sniffs around before munching on a treat? It’s all about choice! Allowing your furry friend to choose their own treats can boost their training and happiness. Here’s why:
✨Increased Motivation: When dogs pick their own treats, they’re more excited and engaged! It’s like letting them choose dessert! 🍰
✨Personal Preference: Every dog is unique! Letting them choose helps you learn what they truly find tasty and rewarding.
So, next time you’re training, let your dog have a say in their treats! 🐾 What’s their favorite? Share in the comments! 🥳🍖 Rheas here was hotdogs!!! 🌭
🐾 Is Your Dog’s Recall a Hit or a Miss? 🎯
Did you know that only about 30% of dogs have a reliable recall? 😲 That means a lot of dogs are more interested in chasing squirrels than listening to their humans! Trusting your dog off-leash can be nerve-wracking if their recall is unpredictable.
So, how do you know if it’s solid or a bit... poisoned? 🤔 Try these tips:
1. Practice, practice, practice!
2. Use high-value treats.
3. Make it a game!
My Rhea is on restricted exercise for 2 weeks after some big surgery on Monday… which means her usual off lead freedom has been revoked. What I am thankful for is all the lead walking training we have done… it makes these icy walks a bit better! And we are having to make sure her needs are being met… let’s face it she’s not a dog that is satisfied being walked on lead!
Failing to meet your dog's needs can lead to a variety of behavioural problems:
✨Boredom and Destructive Behaviour: Dogs need physical and mental stimulation. Without it, they can become bored, leading to destructive behaviours such as chewing furniture, digging, or barking excessively. This is often a way for them to release pent-up energy and frustration.
✨Hyperactivity: Insufficient exercise can lead to hyperactive behaviour. Dogs that are not adequately exercised may become overly energetic, leading to jumping, running in circles, or other hyperactive behaviours that can be disruptive.
✨Increased Reactivity: Dogs that lack socialisation may become more reactive to new experiences, people, and other animals. This can result in fearful or aggressive responses, making walks and outings challenging.
✨Health Issues: Neglecting a dog's physical needs, such as proper diet, exercise, and veterinary care, can lead to health problems that can affect behaviour. Pain or discomfort from health issues can cause changes in temperament, leading to irritability or aggression.
✨Frustration and Impulsivity: Dogs need to have their instinctual needs met, such as the need to chew, chase, or dig. When these needs are not fulfilled, dogs may become frustrated and act out impulsively in ways that are disruptive or harmful.
In summary, failing to meet a dog's needs can lead to a cascade of behavioural problems stemming from boredom, anxiety, frustration, and lack of proper socialisation. By ensuring that your dog's physical, mental, and emotional needs are met, you can help prevent these issues

1. Secure those ornaments! They look shiny, but they can be dangerous if chewed.
2. Watch the treats! Some holiday goodies are toxic to dogs. Always check before feeding!
3. Create a cozy space away from the hustle and bustle so they can chill while you celebrate.

The concept of a cortisol holiday is based on the idea that allowing a dog to experience a break from stressful situations such as intense training, frequent exposure to new environments, or situations that cause anxiety can help restore balance and promote overall well being. Here are some key points about cortisol holidays:
🐶Rest and Recovery: During a cortisol holiday, the dog is typically provided with a calm and safe environment where it can relax, play in a low key manner, and engage in activities that promote mental and physical well being without added stress.
🐶Reducing Stressors: This may include minimising exposure to loud noises, crowded places, or other triggers that may cause anxiety. The goal is to create a more predictable and peaceful environment.
🐶Mental Stimulation: While the focus is on reducing stress, it’s also important to provide low stress mental stimulation, such as puzzle toys or gentle training sessions that encourage positive engagement without overwhelming the dog.
🐶Duration: The length of a cortisol holiday can vary depending on the individual dog’s needs and stress levels. It may last for a few days depending on the dog's baseline stress levels and overall health.
🐶Observation and Adjustment: It's essential for the owner to observe the dog's behaviour and physical condition during this period and make adjustments as needed to ensure the dog is comfortable and relaxed.
By allowing dogs to take a break from stressors, owners can help them recover from chronic stress, which can improve their mood, behaviour, and overall health. If a dog shows signs of prolonged stress or anxiety, it's also advisable to consult with a veterinarian or a qualified animal behaviourist for further guidance.
