“IT’S JUST A LITTLE TAP” – THE LIE WE TELL OURSELVES ABOUT FORCE

I watched a man hit his dog the other day.
Not a full-blown attack. Not something most people would even call abuse. Just a “little tap.” A “correction.”

The dog flinched. Just a little. Just enough to know that wasn’t the first time.

And here’s the part that haunts me: The man didn’t even look angry. He wasn’t raging, he wasn’t out of control. It was casual. A normal part of how he interacted with his dog. A reflex.

🚨 “It’s just a tap.”
🚨 “It didn’t hurt.”
🚨 “He has to learn.”

This is how violence hides in plain sight. It disguises itself as discipline. It masquerades as training. It’s normalised so much that people defend it without a second thought.

🔴 “I was smacked as a kid, and I turned out fine.”
🔴 “My last dog had a choke chain, and he was happy.”
🔴 “Dogs need rules, or they’ll walk all over you.”

We are so conditioned to see force as a normal part of relationships that we barely notice when it happens.
But here’s the truth: Dogs don’t need to fear us to learn. They don’t need a “little tap.” They don’t need a prong collar. They don’t need a human who believes respect is something that has to be forced.

If your training relies on pain, intimidation, or fear, it’s not training. It’s control.

And if that makes you uncomfortable, ask yourself why.

🚨 Dog found dead in woodland in Harthill

We're appealing for information after a dog, believed to be a Collie type, was found dead and wrapped in a blue fleece in the Covenanter Road area.

Sadly, the dog appeared to have been there for a long time and had injuries to their neck but it is unclear whether these were sustained before or after death.

Full Moon & Our Dogs – Myth or Reality? 🌕🐾

It’s a full moon today…

So, have you ever noticed your dog acting a little different during a full moon? If so, you’re not alone! While science hasn’t confirmed a direct link, many guardians report changes in their dogs’ behaviour - restlessness, extra energy, or even increased sensitivity.

Just like us, dogs are attuned to subtle shifts in their environment. A full moon brings brighter nights, changes in natural rhythms, and even shifts in our own emotions - which our dogs pick up on.

Whether it’s a coincidence or something deeper, tonight’s a great time to slow down, observe, and offer a little extra comfort if needed. We have level 1 class, so I’ll be interested to see if I can detect anything different with the dogs tonight 🐶

A lot of clients who graduate from our puppy classes, then stop training. Job done!

But…

It’s so important to keep learning & attending & not just stop. Even if you think they don’t need more training.

Why? 🧐

Learning is life long, it builds a great connection & bond between you as your dog has fun with you whilst attending classes and workshops.

We don’t send children to one set of classes and then stop, nor do we as adults stop learning after school or university. I know I get a sense of satisfaction when I learn a new skill - so does your dog. 🐕.

Keep their mind active, help their well being. ❤️

We have classes for all levels & are continually adding more. Have a look at our events section or pm us for more info.

When Your Labrador Has Other Dinner Plans…

Tonight’s puppy class didn’t quite go as planned—because Sage, my very helpful Labrador, decided to snack on some scented tealights. A true connoisseur of… wax and wick? (Thanks to Brian for teaching puppy class instead this evening!)

Cue a mad dash to the vet, a quick bout of induced vomiting (sorry, Sage!), and now a very tired dog!

So, while I missed class, I’m home now and reminded once again that Labradors have an unmatched talent for eating what they absolutely shouldn’t. I’d like to add those candles have been out for ages and she had never shown an interest at all in them or indeed any other candles or home stuff!

Anyone else got a candle connoisseur at home? Or just a dog with an impressive record of “things that should never be eaten”? Let me know—I could use the laughs!
