Why do force free training advocates get so upset when we see cowed and worried dogs?
Why is it such a let-down for our profession when we see dog trainers with dogs who are hunched and creeping along?
Well, here's why..
Forceful, threatening and fear-based dog training are traumatic events for a dog.
The dog doesnât actually have to be physically hurt for that experience to be traumatic.
They don't even have to be touched.
They just have to believe they are not safe.
Thatâs it!
When a dog doesnât feel safe, their survival response kicks in.
Their nervous system believes they are potentially not going to survive the experience.
Their body sends all its resources to the limbs to try and escape or fight the threat.
(They might pull on the lead or try to get away, they might even try to protect themselves)
If that doesnât help them..
Their body sends all its resources to the dogâs organs, to prevent the death thatâs surely coming.
The dogâs body is screaming âprotect the organsâ.
Itâs clear what a dog looks like in that state.
Itâs something that needs very little education to recognise.
They go into functional freeze, creep around, hunch over, move slowly.
The poor dog is being traumatised there and then.
Serious trauma.
Something they may never, ever be able to recover from.
Or at least need lots of rehabilitation to.
We live in an age of free information and amazing dog advocates who are not mean with their knowledge.
Advocates who put the dogs first.
There is no excuse for training through trauma.
