PUPPIES 🐶

Puppies bite, they chew stuff, they can keep you awake at night and take time to learn a sleep routine, they p*e and poo and sometimes do it inside. It can take time to house train, some more than others.
They can easily get confused about our expectations, they can get frustrated when learning about life and get shouty and bitey, they get tired and bitey and don't want to sleep.

They go through different development stages as they grow having constant new and different experiences, sometimes they deal with these changes sometimes they don't. They make mistakes, they get overaroused, the arousal makes them behave in certain ways like, barking, grabbing, lunging.
They just act on their impulses and they need us to guide them. We need to be kind, understanding and tolerant.

They're beautiful little beings, learning every day, having new experiences every day. Humans brought them into the world, humans give them a home. We have a responsibility to guide and support them through their development with kindness and compassion.
Puppies are hard work but I love the experience, the good and the bad. They are all individually beautifully unique.

We NEED to meet their NEEDS.

They are never with us long enough, before you know it you'll be walking out of the vets with nothing but a collar, lead, a broken heart and loads of memories ...

Enjoy your puppy, embrace the journey, make beautiful memories, even if they're dicks sometimes 🐾❤️

For decades, the concept of anthropomorphism—attributing human characteristics to dogs—was met with scepticism among dog trainers, behaviourists, and other professionals. It was considered an unscientific approach that could mislead our understanding of canine behaviour and needs. However, with advancements in neurology and a deeper awareness of canine cognition and emotion, the perspective on anthropomorphism has undergone a significant transformation. Today, it is increasingly recognised as a valuable tool in enhancing the care, training, and understanding of dogs.

Sue Mimm, through NICE introduced me to the Polyvagal Theory. Wow what an eye opener. Bought Dr Stephen W. Porges's book on the subject and ploughing my way through. Another course below if any of you are interested in looking her up and improving your skills of communication with your dog.

Received from my student Monica who comes to classes with Bronwyn her Sheltie

DOG TRAINING

I'm eighty-one and I go for fun
Off to doggy training.
We go in the cold and in the Sun
And indoors when it's raining.

My dog behaves but what she craves
Is lots and lots of food
She'll do her stuff if she's fed enough
And if she's in the mood.

But I have to say in the way of pay,
She uses striking powers.
Quadruple pay for a holiday
And antisocial hours.

Thank you so much for this Monica. It put a smile on my face as it describes Bron to a "T".

I have just joined NICE - National Institute for Canine Ethics https://www.nicemembership.com/- because I want to be able to help you more in your companionship and learning with your dogs. They've introduced me, via their videos, to Sue Mimm who I highly recommend. She runs https://www.heartconnectiondogs.com/
So check out her blogs and start learning. I'm really getting into this Polyvagal Theory and will pass on my learning in the classes.

Another great article to read.

Hyperhydration, water toxicity, water poisoning.

It's a beautiful day. I'm sitting on the stepping stones in the river, watching my dogs enjoy the water. One likes to "fish" the other likes to try to catch leaves and bits floating on the surface.
They aren't being erratic in their actions, but still they are ingesting more water than usual.

In warmer weather the temption is to chuck all the house destroying creatures (children, teens, dogs, husbands) into the garden with the paddling pool and get smashed on pink gin. However, you should exercise caution if you have water loving dog who could accidentally swallow their body weight in water, whilst repeatedly diving to retrieve balls or biting at streams of water. In extreme cases, ingestion of huge volumes of water can be fatal, though uncommon. The milder end causes the usual signs if electrolyte imbalance.

Wren is not allowed to interact with the hosepipe. Besides the fact it's too stimulating for her, she would drink a couple of days worth of water in a short space of time if she played with it unchecked. Today her and Arthur have just had a bit more water than usual, so I've balanced this with a bit of sheep yoghurt (calcium, potassium), mixed with coconut water (electrolytes), a lump of apple (pectins, sugars), some feta (protein) and a pinch of pink salt.

Great article. Have a read.

Puppies are not clean slates !
You often hear people say 'get a puppy they are a clean slate'

As a behaviourist and breeder I can confidently tell you this is not true. Both nature and nurture has a huge impact.
A puppy will inherit genes from its parents and these genes will impact the puppies genetic potential to behave in a particular way.
Such as :
Using aggression as a strategy to deal with difficult situations
Sociability towards people and dogs
Fearful responses
Sound sensitivity
Strong instinctive behaviour to hunt, chase, grab, hold and guard.
Trainability which includes the ability to learn self control as humans desire it.

When people breed dogs they sometimes select for specific traits and sometimes not. If someone is breeding for a particular look, colour or just money then these traits can become altered becoming stronger or weaker or unbalanced. This can make a dog dangerous for example breeding a dog with gameness and reducing human sociability.

Then the puppy is born and the first 8 weeks learning with the breeder will have an huge impact on the development of all these genetic traits.

My five puppies have all come from the same parents and been reared in the same environment. They have very individual personalities. The training and socialisation they receive in their new homes will only influence the genes and first learning, it won't change their personalities.

So if you are looking for a puppy
Firstly learn about breed traits and instincts and make sure you pick a puppy that will suit your lifestyle. For example there no point getting a breed that is 'aloof with strangers' if you have 3 young children and lots of friends visiting.

Secondly meet the parents or (genes), see what they are like. Make sure you are meeting the actual parents, some people buy in puppy farmed litters and then 'hire' an adult of the same breed to pretend the puppies were bred there!!

Thirdly make sure the puppy has had plenty of early neurological stimulation and learning before it leaves the litter. Ask these questions.
1) What have the puppies seen?
2) Who and what have they met?
2) What have they learnt?
3) How have they learned to play?
4) What do they do if they get frustrated?
5) What do they do if they get bored?

A professional trainer can help support and guide you on the process of looking for a puppy. Don't wait till afterwards for help.

Prevention IS better than Cure. This goes for training and socialisation too, get a professional to help and guide you.

Puppies are building neural pathways with every experience, every day, make sure they're building ones you like.

First Learning is the strongest, make sure you get it right first time.
