๐ฐYesterday, Vet Mel had the pleasure of vaccinating 10 beautiful 7 week old English Rabbits ๐ฅ
๐Why vaccinate?
๐ต To protect them against myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD), which are both fatal diseases affecting both domestic and wild rabbits.
๐ต Rabbits can be vaccinated from 5 weeks old and following their first vaccination, they will require an annual booster.
Gorgeous Labrador puppy in for his second vaccines yesterday Serengoch Labradors Still have a few boys looking for a family to call their own ๐ โค๏ธ
Look at wonderful Deazel featuring in the county times......โญ
Hungarian Vizsla Deazel, 13, and from near Builth Wells, suffered a rare condition called neck tongue syndrome which has only been reported inโฆ
๐น As previously featured, lovely Hamster Winnie ๐น
Poor little Winnie has had a tough time recently with an abscess on his toe needing lots of medical treatment and lancing. Unfortunately the abscess was recurring and instead, surgery seemed to be the only option, as he was becoming unwell.
Vet Paul surgically removed the abscess and Nurse Hannah diligently monitored Winnie under full general anaesthetic.
Since his procedure Winnie's owner has reported he has been much more active and back to his usual mischievous self.
๐ Pretty Little Mabel ๐
Mabel visited our nurses to have her nails trimmed and her parasite treatment applied.
Mabel is a Ragdoll which is a breed known to be laid-back, friendly and love human interaction. Mabel is happy to go out on her lead and harness for a wander and explore her surroundings. She was a star for her treatments, although a little unimpressed by the nail trim. She has the most beautiful eyes and wonderful sweet nature.
Lovely to see you today, Mabel. ๐พ
Beautiful Sapphire ๐
Little Sapphire was spayed last week and she came back for her post-op check today and we are pleased to report she's recovered well. We removed her dressing today and she was so brave, she loved her treat and was very good for her examination.
It was lovely to see her today ๐

โฐ๏ธ Tomorrow is the day โฐ๏ธ 1๏ธโฃ1๏ธโฃth May 2024
Tomorrow Kelly, her husband Mike and friends will be walking Snowdon for The Brain Tumour Charity. It has only been a few months since Kelly had surgery to remove a brain tumour, so this charity is very close to her heart.
We are so proud of how she has taken on such a huge challenge but we know she will achieve it as her strength and determination is second to none.
Kelly is very thankful for all donations so far and to everyone supporting her on this adventure and during her recovery.
The Brain Tumour Charity is the world's leading brain tumour charity and the largest dedicated funder of research into brain tumours globally. Committed to saving and improving lives, we're moving further, faster to help every single person affected by a brain tumour.

๐ National Receptionists Day ๐
Today is national receptionists day so we will take this opportunity to say a massive thank you to our wonderful reception team here at Ddole road.
Many of them also have other roles too but they still manage to keep us all in check and organise us all throughout the day.
As well as helping on reception, Kelly is our HR manager, Amber is our practice manager and Janet (JP) is our bookkeeper. Wendy and Lauren also have important extra jobs they do as part of the team to keep everything running smoothly.
We appreciate they have a very varied role within the clinic as they not only answer the phones and book appointments but they also organise the large animal visits for the vets, sort paperwork, manage payments and insurances, farm paperwork and organise meetings amongst other things. Their job does sometimes mean they are at the receiving end of a range of emotions during busy, difficult and emotional times. Thank you for your patience and for your efficiency every day.

๐ ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ฃ ๐ ๐ ๐ฅ๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐ฅ๐ ๐ Tilly is our slimmer of the month, May 2024!
In total she has lost an incredible 4.9kgs so far! Well done Tilly ๐๐ป
Tilly's owners have always been so dedicated to her weight loss journey and this transformation really shows what can be achieved when you stick to a plan.
Tilly's owner came to see our nurses for advice as her weight was creeping up slowly. Tilly was being fed on a good quality diet and only had carrots for treats, tons of exercise but was still gaining weight.
After a consultation with our nurses we designed a plan for Tilly and put her onto a new food suitable for neutered dogs and also a weight management diet. Since then she has continued to lose weight consistently. We check her measurements and discuss her progress each visit. Her owners really want to do best by her and they have done really well in achieving this so far. Da Iawn!
Well done Tilly ๐

๐ฆด Brave Dave ๐ฆด
Poor Dave got himself into a bit of trouble on the farm which meant he needed specialist orthopaedic surgery.
Dave was admitted by Vet Liz, for radiographs and pain relief after a collision with a farm vehicle. Our radiographs showed that his left hip was luxated.
There was also a lot of swelling and he needed further imaging. He was referred to Mill Referrals and surgery was performed there, in Aberystwyth a few days later.
Kate, the surgeon described the swelling as very severe from thigh to paw, Dave had got himself into a real pickle.
Kate at Mill Referrals said what a lovely dog he is and thanked us for entrusting him into her care. The operation to repair the luxation meant the hip was put back into place by Kate, and a special suture was placed, joint capsule closed, muscle repaired and the skin sutured up. A dressing was also applied to keep the wound clean.
He has a wonderful temperament and is coping well with his recovery. His owners have been very dedicated to his post- operative care and this shows in his progress.
Thanks to Kate and her wonderful team at Mill Referrals, once again.
Stay out of trouble, Dave ๐ค๐ป๐พ
๐ Welcome, Margaret ๐๐ป
Margaret is our newest member to Ddole Road Vets and she likes to say that she took the โscenic routeโ to get here (having gone through not just one, but two degrees). She upped sticks, leaving behind her beloved dog, Cassidy, and came across the water from Ireland to enjoy some of the rural life that Wales has to offer. Her previous degree in Agricultural Science, as well as being related to several farmers, means Margaret isnโt afraid to get stuck in on the large animal side of things.
When Margaret isnโt in work, you might find her out exploring the beautiful landscapes that Wales has to offer relaxing in her art studio at home or curled up with a good book and a nice, hot pot of tea.
Margaret is looking forward to meeting the locals and getting to treat all creatures, great and small.
We are thrilled to have Margaret on board, Welcome ๐๐ป
๐ May is Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month ๐
As part of the BVNA campaign to raise awareness and to protect the Veterinary Nurse title, we will be participating by celebrating our nurses, and all that they do.
You will usually see our nurses rushing around in their blue scrubs, whilst you wait in the waiting room with your pet, to see the Vet.
You may meet our nurses during a nurse consultation, they may assist the vet during a consultation, help to hold your pet for a blood sample, they may be answering the phones, walking inpatients around outside and very occasionally, making tea โ๐
Over the coming weeks, we will share with you, what our VNs do.
Our nursing team consists of these wonderful members :
Hannah Streat RVN (Head Nurse), Jan Davies QVN, Chloe Morris ANA, Lauren Guest RVN certVNRT, Niah Rowlands RVN and Lily Williams ANA SVN.
๐พ Frankie ๐พ
Frankie visited us for microchipping yesterday. It's not every day our feline patients arrive on a harness and lead, so we took this opportunity to get some photographs.
He was calm and happy to have a sniff around and very brave for his microchip.
A microchip is a small device inserted under the skin, about the size of a grain of rice, which stores owner information.
This information is then logged on a database and if your pet wanders, they can be scanned by vets/rescue centres and owners details can be read and owners informed of their pets location.
It is already a legal requirement for dogs to be microchipped and soon to be a requirement in England, for all cats to be microchipped. We hope this legislation is also brought in soon, in Wales.
We would always recommend microchipping your pet as it gives them the best chance to be reunited with you, if they find themselves lost.
๐ฆ Robert ๐ฆ
Glorious Robert was in for a beak and nail trim this week with Vet, Paul. He is so beautiful to look at, with such bright, vivid feathers, we had to share him with you all.
Paul and Nurse Jan had to beak-areful as his beak was very sharp, but he was very well behaved for his procedure.
Nice to meet you, Robert ๐ชถ
๐พ Clyde ๐พ
We had a visit from lovely Clyde today. He visited our new Veterinary Surgeon, Margaret, for his second puppy vaccinations.
He has already learnt to sit for his treats and was very good for his examination. He is a credit to his new family and it was lovely to meet him.
Welcome, Margaret ๐
We welcome, Margaret, the newest member of our team. We are very happy to have her on board.
She is a mixed animal Vet so you will see her with your pets but also treating your farm animals.
๐ฆท Dental Care ๐ฆท
๐ถMilly came in recently for a dental descale and polish and there was a lot of plaque and tartar build up on her teeth.
Dental procedures are performed under general anaesthetic by our Veterinary surgeons and a veterinary nurse is assigned to monitor the anaesthetic throughout and care for your pet during recovery. She was such a sweet little dog and enjoyed lots of fuss from all the staff.
๐ชฅIt is important to keep on top of your pets dental hygiene and the perfect way to do this is brushing their teeth daily .
We appreciate this is not possible with some pets and we can offer advice and alternative ways to achieve this including dental products such as water additives, sprays and gels and also diets that can help maintain and improve oral hygiene.
โ ๏ธDid you know we can also offer dental x-rays? Radiographs are essential for identifying the severity of dental conditions. We will offer dental radiographs at the time of your pets dental, if the vet feels imaging may be required.
๐We do offer FREE nurse consultations to help our clients achieve this and our nurses will happily discuss products with you.
๐พโผ๏ธWe do advise that any products you do choose for your pets have been reviewed by the Veterinary Oral Health Council, as some products advertised may be dangerous for your pets โผ๏ธ๐พ
๐น Winnie ๐น
Poor Winnie was brought in to see Paul as he had an abscess on his foot.
Paul managed to treat this using local anaesthetic to lance and drain the abscess, antibiotics and some pain relief.

Speedy recovery Winnie ๐
A farm vet is never off duty.....
Ally was back home in the Black Mountains on the weekend at her home farm .
Five months ago, there was a sneaky visit from an unruly ram, and as a result there are some very happy mums with their beautiful little lambs ๐
๐พ Bonnie ๐พ
Beautiful little Bonnie came to see us for her second vaccination with Vet Karen. She received a full health check, vaccination, puppy pack and a free puppy food sample.
Socialising your puppy with a vet and visiting the veterinary practice regularly, even just for them to be weighed, is a great way to get them used to popping in. Bringing them in and not having any treatments done, means they have a positive experience.
Please ask our staff members to give your puppy a treat during their visit, to ensure they have a pleasant experience and leave feeling happy and not anxious and worried.
Socialisation and habituation is key to owning a happy puppy ๐ฆด
๐ถWe couldn't resist sharing these cute puppies, as they all came in to see Vet Iwan for their first vaccinations and microchips. Vet nurse Niah helped with the paperwork as there was a lot of it, as you can imagine. Lily, our Student veterinary nurse held them for their health checks and gave them lots of reassurance throughout.
๐The Microchipping of Dogs (Wales) Regulations 2015 came into force on 6th April 2016.
Every keeper/owner of a dog, other than a puppy under 8 weeks of age or a certified working dog, must have their dog microchipped and must have certain information recorded on a database.
๐๏ธThey will soon be heading off to new homes of their own, good luck little ones ๐ถ

Buddy is our slimmer of the month, April 2024!
In total he has lost 3kgs so far! He doesn't have too far to go to hit his target weight now.
He has also lost 5cm on his neck measurement, 6cm from his chest and 8cm from his waist!! Incredible.
He comes in to see our nurses religiously every 2 weeks for weighing and to check his measurements.
His owners have done really well and he has only had a few set backs, we are hoping next week he is back down to his lowest weight recorded so far. His owners find that seeing him regularly to be weighed, keeps them on track too, as they want the best for Buddy.
If you are worried your pet is overweight and you need some advice, call and book a FREE weight clinic with one of our Veterinary nurses.

๐ฐLeo the Lionhead ๐ฐ Leo came in today to have his teeth burred as they had become overgrown and were affecting his appetite. Dental disease in rabbits is sometimes present from birth, but can actually develop because the teeth arenโt being worn down properly. This can be helped by ensuring they are having the correct foods to eat. ๐ฐWhat is the best diet for dental health in our rabbits? - Herbivore teeth are meant to continually chew on high-fibre food such as grass or hay. - Most of the diet should consist of this and around 80% of the diet should be hay or grass. This is easy to measure out as it works out as a body-sized portion of hay per day. They should also have leafy greens and a small amount of rabbit nuggets everyday. Access to fresh water is also very important to support digestion. Signs of dental disease in your rabbit may include: - Drooling - Weight loss - Reduced appetite - Change in appetite If you have any concerns or questions about rabbit nutrition, please ask us and we will be able to help.
