Sometimes the saddle shape no longer suits the horse.

One of the main principles of saddle fit is that the saddle must spread the rider's weight evenly across as large a surface area as appropriate for the anatomy of that horse.

This is a young horse who has done a fair bit of maturing and changing, even between the first and second photo.

Unfortunately that meant his saddle was no longer the most suitable option for him. Things his owner noticed were the feeling of being tipped forward in the saddle and his strides were short and fairly choppy and he wasn't easy to get going forward.

After discussing what the owner wanted and what would work for Winston he is now the proud owner of his new comfier saddle! It was great to see his stride length increase straight away, he showed great mobility through his shoulders, back and hindlimbs as the weight was spread evenly and provided him freedom of movement.

The great thing about his new saddle is that it can continue to change as he does!

Say what you see. Can you find any areas that would need to be taken into consideration for saddle fit and chiropractic care?
The tied screwdrivers are a clue to one area!

๐Ÿ‘€ Check out this change! ๐Ÿ‘€

I doubted my template as it seemed so different from the one I had done 6 months prior. Rechecked and put it back on the paper, nope still the same! Measured the difference between the purple and red lines to find a massive 2cm change in the shape of this gorgeous boys back!

I had treated Ollie a few times before I added saddle fitting to my repertoire. He had made good improvements but he still showed a lack of muscle behind his shoulder as you can see in the purple lines. Approximately 6 months ago we changed his saddle, combined with a lovely saddle pad, new girth, dietary supplement, more chiropractic care and an increase in his endurance training. This is the proof that everything needs to work together, without everything coming together he was making improvements but still had an underlying level of "just not enough".

Ollie's owner is incredibly dedicated to his homework and the maintenance of his saddle fit and is able to contact me with videos and pictures the second she feels something has changed so we can work together straight away to prevent any restrictions.

Ps, my templating is much smarter now I have my new fancy forms ๐Ÿ˜œ

Only been seeing this lovely boy for a couple of months but I'm already so chuffed with the changes.

He has had big changes to his posture, muscle balance and way of going. Looking forward to seeing him next time and catching up with everything he and his rider are getting up to!

Nothing like a bit of fresh air ๐Ÿ˜…

Bracing against the cold, trying to make saddle changes as quickly as possible to keep rider and horse from getting cold and wet on Monday and an exciting hilltop drive in the snow yesterday ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ fingers crossed today can happen too!

Hope everyone is doing ok in the snow and ice, take care!

BSc student at Aberystwyth University is asking for people willing to fill in this questionnaire. I always like to help students doing research as I remember how hard it was when I was doing my dissertations!

"Iโ€™m in my final year of university and completing my dissertation on Horse Behaviour, specifically looking at Insights into Equine Pain: Investigating Amateur Leisure Horse Owners' Perception of Pain.
A topic hugely passionate of mine!

Please take 5/10 minutes to participate in my questionnaire ๐Ÿ™"

Interesting day at Wow Saddles at the beginning of the week after a hellish journey around the M25 ๐Ÿ™„

It was totally worth it though, lots of information, fitting to enhance the biomechanics of the horse and rider, giving me more tools to help with fitting issues!

Great explanation that highlights how different factors can affect your saddle and why it is important to understand that changes in your horse can affect the fit regardless of when your calendar says the fitter is due for a recheck.

02/08/2024

When your horse extends through their AO joint [the articulation between the base of the skull and C1], their lower jaw retracts - you can feel this yourself if you point your nose to the sky, notice how your bottom jaw glides back.

When your horse flexes through their AO joint, their lower jaw protracts - you can feel this yourself if you press your chin to your chest, notice how your bottom jaw glides forwards.

When your horse flexes through their AO joint, their laryngeal diameter decreases - you can feel this by pressing your chin to your chest and taking a deep breath in, notice how much harder that is.

If your horse has tension in their jaw, they lose range of motion through their AO joint - you can feel this yourself if you clamp your jaw shut, notice how much harder it is to point your nose to the sky or point your chin to your chest - your neck feels tight and immobile.

And the same can be said if your horse has tension through their AO joint or neck, they will lose range of motion through their jaw.

-

Now do all of those movements again and notice how, when you drop your chin to your chest:

It's difficult to inflate your ribs to breathe,

It's hard to round your back,

Your hips tighten up.

This is because you've impinged your deep ventral line.

We do this to horses when we ride with a rein length/tension that doesn't accomodate and support their anatomy.

So if we compress their jaw and neck, we compromise their ability to:

Breathe

Lift their back to carry a rider

Activate their hindlimb.
..Gives us quite a lot to think about with how many horses are ridden and trained, doesn't it?

๐ŸŒŸLuther is such an inspiring young man. I am delighted to offer him the Align Their Spine sponsorship which includes both chiropractic and saddle fitting for his team of ponies๐ŸŒŸ

I met Luther (9) and his mum Zoe 2 years ago when they contacted me with a complicated case. With care and dedication they were able to rehabilitate this pony from struggling to trot to enjoying all elements of her ridden work. Not only does Luther have a natural instinct when it comes to his ponies and their needs, he has worked really hard to understand and learn more and more. I usually chat to Luther when I arrive and he is able to talk me through why he needed me to come and see his horses, what he felt and observed and what he thinks will need to happen going forward with their training. It is this intuition that has enabled him to take on the more challenging cases and succeed in creating happier ponies.

This dedication and commitment to doing what is best for his ponies is why he has been chosen as Align Their Spineโ€™s sponsored rider. I look forward to being able to post updates on their journey!
