Treated to a day out at Burghley ๐
A year ago Pixie was diagnosed with kissing spine at T13-T15. After steroid injections and a short rest period his owner was encouraged to proceed with rehab of in hand pole work, carrot stretches and riding. Unfortunately none of this made a difference to Pixie's comfort level and his owner was struggling with what to do next.
My treatment, knowledge and experience is constantly evolving and I usually spend a significant amount of time delving into individual cases to try to get to the core of the issue. Why has this been happening, why isn't the normal, generic rehab prescription working?
With this case we had to first correct the issue of his dysfunctional posture, as his body simply was not prepared for the movements he was being asked to perform. Carrot stretches and poles are prescribed all the time, I am guilty of prescribing them as well, it is just seen as the norm. Not any more!! The more I read and listen to some of the amazing people who are pushing the boundaries of equine rehabilitation, understand the anatomy and movement of various parts of the body, the more my understanding of how we help our horses has developed.
I think this video proves that on its own! As my clients would be able to confirm, I get rather passionate about rehabilitation and making sure our horses are prepared for what we want from them. I heard a great quote of "how can we ask them to do something more advanced if the prerequisites have not been met?" This should be at the forefront of everything we do. Would you lift a heavy weight if your form was not correct? If you do you will hurt yourself...would you risk that with your own body? We shouldn't expect our horses to do the same. Should they go over a set of poles if they can't correctly engage through their thoracic sling and lift? If they go over the poles 10 times in dysfunction and once correctly are we not just reinforcing the dysfunction?
Encourage and train the correct posture so the horse can use the correct fo
I haven't seen Troy for a while and he has had an injury meaning I had a bit to unwind in his recent visit. I think the picture speaks for itself! He will be much more comfortable now!

Harry was very cautious at the beginning of his session. He doesn't trust very easily. During the treatment he kept creeping closer to me and I was amazed to see him actively letting go, lots of yawning, head lowering and eyes closing !
Obviously I was too slow with my phone to capture any of that ๐๐คฆโโ๏ธ
He presented with right side jaw tension, an axial rotation of his barrel, lower on the right side and he struggled to relax in his contact.
His biggest area of release was the neck and shoulders. Hopefully he will be able to go out and feel much softer in his work.
Right, lunch break over, back to work!

An example of how some seemingly small but fundamental changes can have a big impact. The first photo is before any treatment, the second is just after his second treatment 5 weeks later.
It wasn't until I put the pictures side by side that you could really see how much he has changed already proving that progress pictures are crucial and useful tools!
Same as his last post, Cled still has a long way to go but we are looking at the positive changes here! We are getting his body and posture into the correct frame to be able to move correctly and efficiently rather than battling against restrictive posture.
On another note, check out how different his saddle fit would be between the top and bottom pictures!

๐Immediate effects and the importance that processing and time, even a couple of hours, can have on the treatment results๐
Skitz showed changes throughout the treatment and I think the last picture of him in the sun really shows how the body is still making changes even after I am gone!
Another dedicated owner with simple but effective homework to complete over the next month before we check in and see how he is progressing ๐
