I comment on spinal mobility in some way on every single case, from a treatment perspective and from a saddle fit perspective. What does it mean and why do I refer to it constantly?!

Check out my blog for more information!

Spinal mobility plays a crucial role in horse health, yet it often flies under the radar. A flexible spine not only impacts performance but significantly enhances comfort and overall quality of life for horses. Understanding the importance of maintaining spinal mobility can lead to more effective ca...

I co-hosted a webinar with the McTimoney College of Chiropractic recently on Kissing Spines, Pathology, Implications and Chiropractic Rehabilitation of this common condition.
I thought I would put a bit of a summary together on my blog for you guys to check out. It is unfortunately very common and knowledge is power πŸ’ͺ

Kissing spines, also known as overriding dorsal spinous processes (ODSP), is a common condition in horses that can lead to pain and performance issues. As a horse owner, understanding this condition is crucial for the health and well-being of your equine companion. In this blog, we will explore what...

Great day with Connect Equine Ltd last week. Lots more to think about and their saddles are biomechanically designed for the horse and rider. So the rider can sit with a neutral pelvis and the horse can achieve their dynamic posture without being blocked by narrow, steeply angled rails or over shaped trees.
What does that mean in real life??

It means your horse can lift their back to move in a dynamic weight bearing posture, it means they can have mobility through their spine in all the directions it should move in. It means your horse isn't being restricted into spinal extension by their tack. A spine in extension will increase the risk of spinal pathology, hindlimb pathology, neck pathology the list goes on. Everything is connected so if mobility is restricted in one area it will impact the whole body.

This is a saddle that has the ability to help us protect our horses musculoskeletal health.

Disclaimer is that obviously it needs to be fitted and maintained, sounds obvious but this is for those picky commenters I seem to get πŸ˜†

Sometimes the saddle shape no longer suits the horse.

One of the main principles of saddle fit is that the saddle must spread the rider's weight evenly across as large a surface area as appropriate for the anatomy of that horse.

This is a young horse who has done a fair bit of maturing and changing, even between the first and second photo.

Unfortunately that meant his saddle was no longer the most suitable option for him. Things his owner noticed were the feeling of being tipped forward in the saddle and his strides were short and fairly choppy and he wasn't easy to get going forward.

After discussing what the owner wanted and what would work for Winston he is now the proud owner of his new comfier saddle! It was great to see his stride length increase straight away, he showed great mobility through his shoulders, back and hindlimbs as the weight was spread evenly and provided him freedom of movement.

The great thing about his new saddle is that it can continue to change as he does!

The tied screwdrivers are a clue to one area!

πŸ‘€ Check out this change! πŸ‘€

I doubted my template as it seemed so different from the one I had done 6 months prior. Rechecked and put it back on the paper, nope still the same! Measured the difference between the purple and red lines to find a massive 2cm change in the shape of this gorgeous boys back!

I had treated Ollie a few times before I added saddle fitting to my repertoire. He had made good improvements but he still showed a lack of muscle behind his shoulder as you can see in the purple lines. Approximately 6 months ago we changed his saddle, combined with a lovely saddle pad, new girth, dietary supplement, more chiropractic care and an increase in his endurance training. This is the proof that everything needs to work together, without everything coming together he was making improvements but still had an underlying level of "just not enough".

Ollie's owner is incredibly dedicated to his homework and the maintenance of his saddle fit and is able to contact me with videos and pictures the second she feels something has changed so we can work together straight away to prevent any restrictions.

Ps, my templating is much smarter now I have my new fancy forms 😜

Only been seeing this lovely boy for a couple of months but I'm already so chuffed with the changes.

He has had big changes to his posture, muscle balance and way of going. Looking forward to seeing him next time and catching up with everything he and his rider are getting up to!

Nothing like a bit of fresh air πŸ˜…

Bracing against the cold, trying to make saddle changes as quickly as possible to keep rider and horse from getting cold and wet on Monday and an exciting hilltop drive in the snow yesterday πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ fingers crossed today can happen too!

Hope everyone is doing ok in the snow and ice, take care!

BSc student at Aberystwyth University is asking for people willing to fill in this questionnaire. I always like to help students doing research as I remember how hard it was when I was doing my dissertations!

"I’m in my final year of university and completing my dissertation on Horse Behaviour, specifically looking at Insights into Equine Pain: Investigating Amateur Leisure Horse Owners' Perception of Pain.
A topic hugely passionate of mine!

Please take 5/10 minutes to participate in my questionnaire πŸ™"

Interesting day at Wow Saddles at the beginning of the week after a hellish journey around the M25 πŸ™„

It was totally worth it though, lots of information, fitting to enhance the biomechanics of the horse and rider, giving me more tools to help with fitting issues!
