Q: I’ve heard pink salt can contain too much iron – so how much does it contain and is it safe?

A: Natural rocksalt, like our Himalayan Salt Licks can contain trace levels of other minerals, including iron, but they are very low levels and therefore not relevant to the overall diet at all. For example, analysis of our licks show they contain approximately 5mg/kg of iron. Even at quite high intake rates, say 30g a day, that represents less than 0.5% of their daily iron requirement.
Compare that to the grass they’re eating, which could easily provide 4 or 5 times their total daily iron needs, and you can see that all their iron comes from grazing and forage, with salt licks providing a negligible level.
