A VERY SPECIAL ADOPTION 🐾

After almost 4 years of waiting patiently, Elsa the lurcher has found her forever family.

At Hope Rescue, our wish is always that the time from arrival in our care to moving to a forever home is as short as possible for our dogs.

Sometimes, there are dogs who wait a bit longer to find their perfect match.

Elsa has built up a tremendous bond with the whole team at Hope, having been in our care for so long. Everyone is delighted that Elsa finally has the home that she thoroughly deserved 🫶

Since settling into her new home, her family has sent us an update.

‘We just want to say that Elsa is a happy, funny girl who loves chasing with her new brother Ollie, or snuggling up with us while we're reading or watching telly. Everyone in the house is smitten with her and its lovely to see her cheeky personality coming out.’

Have a wonderful time, Elsa 🥰

There are images and video of Elsa on her story page

INTERACTIVE RING TOYS NEEDED

This we are looking to stock up on interactive puller toys to top up our toybox. We currently do not have any in stock and our dogs really could benefit from using them in their kennels and paddocks with the team.

We are particularly looking to stock up puller ring toys. These interactive toys ensure a safe and engaging grab-and-tug play, whilst being gentle on our dogs teeth and gums. They also allow our welfare team to keep their fingers safely out of the way during the fun play times.

Chewing and play are crucial for the wellbeing of our dogs, providing essential physical exercise, stress relief and mental stimulation. You can choose small, medium or large toys here on our wishlist:

💜 EVERY BLINK TELLS A STORY... 💜

And sadly in Corryn's case it tells a very painful story, 😢

Corryn recently arrived in our care as a stray, she was whisked down to the vets as her eyes were completely glazed over with thick green discharge.

She started on immediate treatment which helped to alleviate some of the discomfort. Now the infection is under control it has become clear Corryn has been suffering with this issue for some time. She has a chronic case of dry eye, but is now receiving treatment and we are already seeing drastic improvements. She will need to continue eye medication long term.

Corryn is a bright and active girl whose potential is being wasted in kennels, please visit our website to enquire more about Corryn:

🐶 MAKING UP FOR LOST TIME 🐶

As you can see Astrid is wasting no time catching up on the playtime she missed whilst she was nursing her pups.

Astrid arrived in our care as a stray but was carrying extra passengers on board! Thankfully she was able to raise her pups in the comfort of a lovely foster home, her pups have now all flown the nest and Astrid is ready to find her very own happy ever after.

Astrid is such a social girl and would spend every minute of the day with her humans given the choice. Astrid would prefer to keep all the attention for herself so is looking to be the only pet in the household.

She is the perfect house guest who would slot into a new home with ease.

Please visit our website for more information on Astrid:

A NEW HOME FOR NAVY 🐾

Three-year-old terrier Navy has found his forever home.

This handsome lad arrived as a stray and became the 5,000th dog to come through our gates, since the rescue centre opened in 2017.

As we reflect on all of the dogs we’ve helped in that time, it’s a fitting tribute to the tireless work of our team and our volunteer foster homes, and to all of the organisations and individuals that support us 🫶

After spending time in a loving foster home, to prepare him for his new life, we’re really pleased that Navy is heading off on his next adventure.

Good luck, Navy!

💜 PLEASE WELCOME RIBENA 💜

Our recent Ice Lolly puppies gained a lot of attention when they went online for rehoming and we hope the same will happen for their mom Ribena!

Ribena is only a young girl at just over a year old. She has a shy disposition when meeting new people but it hasn’t taken her long to become a firm favourite with the centre team. 🥹

Each day Ribena is coming out of her shell and we are hopeful it won’t be long until she finds her forever home!

£5K LIFELINE NEEDED FOR LEONA THE LURCHER - ABANDONED WITH A BROKEN LEG

You may remember our appeal for information about stray lurcher Leona last week, who arrived with a broken leg.

Our appeal was shared far and wide but, heartbreakingly, no owner came forward. We can only conclude that she was deliberately abandoned, due to her injury, which makes us incredibly sad.

On inspection at the vets, there was further sad news as it became clear that the injury wasn't fresh and was at least a few days old.

We know that Leona deserves so much better than this and, due to the severity of her injury, our team worked across the weekend to arrange for Leona to receive specialist care.

At Hope Rescue, we are committed to doing our best for the dogs that arrive in our care, regardless of their breed, age, or medical condition. As a larger dog with a complex break to a front leg, we wanted to avoid amputation if possible and Leona was a good candidate for successful orthopaedic surgery.

We are pleased to say that the operation went well at specialist vets, Langfords, but there is a long road ahead for her recovery. Leona is on very strict rest for the next 6 weeks.

During this time, we are urgently looking for a foster home to help her recover. If you can help, please apply here 👉 www.hoperescue.org.uk/foster

Leona will need regular bandage changes every couple of days and a return trip to the specialists to check how well her leg has healed.

Thank you to everyone who donated last week. The £990 raised enabled us to meet the cost of the investigative work, but now we are faced with a bill in excess of £5,000 due to the complex nature of her injury.

We’re hoping that our supporters can help Leona get back on her feet and live the life she deserves.

To donate to Leona’s treatment, you can tap the Donate button here on Facebook

or visit www.hoperescue.org.uk/leona to donate online.

Thank you from Leona and the Hope team ❤

HAPPY 'BRING YOUR DOG TO WORK DAY' 🐾

Today we’re giving a shout out to all of the dog-friendly workplaces.

Being able to bring your dog to work can help to minimise the time your dog is left home alone, and can help to boost your well-being too.

If you work from home then this is a bit easier! (But do you manage to get work completed?)

For some workplaces, it may not be practical or safe for your dog to join you. We also need to think of our dogs’ welfare if it’s a particularly busy or noisy environment.

We’d love to see your photos in the comments below, and hear any tips for bringing your dogs to work. 👇

Maybe you’ve got a spot in your workplace for your dog to have quiet moments through the day.

What on your checklist for the day?
🐾Treats
🐾 Poo bags
🐾 Toys
🐾 Opportunities to exercise?

COMMUNITY MINDED MERTHYR

The Hope in the community team were pleased to meet so many dog lovers from the Merthyr community this week.

The aptly named Hope Pantry - Merthyr Tydfil were our brilliant hosts, and we helped to answer a whole range of great questions - from fear of loud noises, to getting along safely with children, pulling on the lead, to dental care.

Merthyr is lucky to have such a caring and responsible community of dog guardians!

Thank you also to everyone who came along to the session.

💕 MEANT TO BE? 💕

Allie (staffie) was recently found as a stray by a previous adopter of ours. She was found out of area so went to the local pound to complete her 7 days as a stray. For many years we have committed to taking all the unclaimed strays from this local pound so it wasn’t long until Allie found her way into Hope.

Allie was full of milk on arrival with sore skin and in need of a dental, we were relieved when her ultrasound was negative for pregnancy so we can begin work on her other needs.

Allie hasn't had to look far to find her special someone as her finder has followed her story closely and Allie is currently in the process of getting to know previous Hope rescue dog Alfie and his canine brother Teddy in the hopes she can join the family permanently!

We hope to be bringing you a happily homed update soon!🤞

HOPE RESCUE JOINS THE TIME FOR CHANGE COALITION

We’re delighted to join the Coalition Against Hunting, a coalition of leading animal welfare charities calling for the law to be strengthened to stop hunting with dogs for good.

On Monday, coalition members headed to London, to send a message to DEFRA and the UK Government that it’s time for change.
The Hope team couldn’t attend on this occasion, but we wanted to share the brilliant images from the day.

This is an important topic for us.

In the last 12 months we have taken in 63 Lurchers, many with injuries and scars, having likely been used as working dogs then abandoned.

We have also taken in several terriers with injuries consistent with badger baiting, as well as hunt hounds.

We’re pleased to be joining the League Against Cruel Sports and other organisations as part of this coalition.

Our lovely girl Robin recently arrived in our care after a call from her distressed owner as Robin began giving birth.

She is only a pup herself at 11 months old but has taken to motherhood with ease 🥰

We are now on the search for a foster family for them so they can begin to learn all about life in a home.

PRIORITIES FOR ANIMAL WELFARE AT THE GENERAL ELECTION 🐾

A General Election is just over two weeks away, and we’re calling for animal welfare to be a priority for the next UK Government.

You can support Hope Rescue’s aims for this election by asking your election candidates to prioritise animal welfare. What is their stance on our 5 priorities?

1. Stronger breeding regulations to protect dogs from being bred in low welfare conditions or with innate health issues.

2. Improved dog control legislation that tackles the root causes of dog-related incidents.

3. Protection for imported pets including legislation to deal with puppy smuggling and ear-cropping.

4. A phased end to greyhound racing in UK

5. Statutory grants for animal welfare organisations.

In recent years, there have been missed opportunities to strengthen protections for vulnerable dogs, but there is a chance in the future for decision makers to bring positive change for animal welfare.

Find out more on our website
