The horse labelled too dangerous to handle.
Barney Bear. I love the bones of this horse and am so proud of how far he’s come.
A year ago he broke his owners leg in the field, as he rodeos off like this, but at that point had no regard for human safety. He caught his owner on the way out and broke her leg in a good few places.
He was untouched for a few weeks as she was so scared he would injure someone else. There have been a few incidents with other people trying to handle him and he ended up labelled ‘dangerous’.
Don’t get me wrong. In the wrong hands he definitely could be. With me he’s gone from strength to strength. He’s learnt to mind the people around him where hes allowed to have his crazy zoomie outbursts but away from others.
In a year he’s gone from the horse who was being sold as he was too dangerous to being handled, doing his first show surrounded by people and horses, and being lightly backed.
Lovingly termed the “little sh*t” now for his cheeky attitude to life rather than his dangerous demeanour.

I could have set my camera on a fence for sure… but I was already on board so what can you do.. 🤷♀️😂.
Barney is absolutely smashing it being ridden. This is probably his 4th time having a rider on board. We’ve started now asking him to move off and stop when asked. It requires lots of leg 😂. But better that than a bolter.. he’s also started to learn to turn and give a little to the leg. He’s just all round a smarty pants.
I’m so lucky his owner pretty much gives me carte blanch with such a cool boy.

The gift that just keeps on giving 🫶🏻. Mr Barns.
Real name: Barnaby
What I call him: Mr Barns/Barnacle
What his owner calls him: Little sh*t
Not so little anymore this shire/cob mix has had quite the glow up in the last 6 months in physical appearance as well as mentality.
Barns is actually owned by a lovely mum and daughter duo on my yard. When he arrived he was quite young and slightly feral but manageable to handle. As he aged things progressively went down the hill. A very short time before I was set to go off travelling, a freak accident happened with Barns and his owner that lead to quite a serious injury and him developing the rep on the yard of being a dangerous horse.
I actually did a sales video up for him and he was advertised out before I left. He had minimal handling while I was away other than the necessities.
Cut to my return. Of course because I am me, and I cannot help myself, I started to see the potential in this very brainy young horse. I actually saw a lot of the same personality traits from him to Aurum. So I of course got attached 😂.
His owner also was still very attached to him, yet thought for everyone’s safety she was better selling as she could not handle him herself in her state. He was close to sale to a new home when I spoke with her and said I would take on the challenge that was the young ‘dangerous’ horse.
Not going to lie. There were some hairy moments. However he was taught boundaries, by me and my pony bouncers, and respect. He learnt to leave his feet on the ground while around people and now he’s the most lovable goon.
I even backed him on my own tackless with Aurum keeping watch in the same arena (my ever present guard dog 🥹).
Nothing really phases this boy now, he’s even started now being lead by one of his owners again with their other horse.
He’s not perfect. He’s still a young horse. He will have his moments however that’s why he’s called the little sh*t 😂.

Today, I want to talk about something that all equestrians can relate to - the emotional rollercoaster that comes with being a horse lover. 🌟
You see, being an equestrian isn’t just about riding horses and looking fabulous in the saddle. It’s about forming a deep bond with these majestic creatures who become our partners, our friends, and sometimes even our therapists. 🤗💔
Yes, I said therapists. Because let’s be real, being an equestrian means shedding some tears along the way. Whether it’s the frustration of a missed jump, the heartbreak of saying goodbye to a beloved horse, or the sheer exhaustion after a long day, we’ve all been there. 😭
But here’s the beautiful part - despite the tears, equestrians are some of the most productive people out there. 🌟 We know how to turn our emotions into fuel for success. We channel our frustrations into determination, our heartbreak into resilience, and our exhaustion into unwavering dedication. 💪
We wake up before the sun rises, ready to tackle the day’s challenges. We push ourselves through grueling training sessions, always striving to improve. We juggle school, work, and social life, all while making sure our four-legged partners are happy and healthy. 🌞📚🏇
And you know what? It’s all worth it. We become one with our horses, and in that moment, there’s nothing else that matters. 🌈
So, to all my fellow equestrians out there, remember that it’s okay to cry. It’s okay to feel all the emotions that come with this incredible journey. But don’t let those tears hold you back. Let them fuel your passion, your drive, and your determination to become the best equestrian you can be. 🌟🐴

Taylor bringing the feels today.
One of the biggest influences in my life by far is this defective unicorn. 🦄
People who hear I have horses are always so curious as to what it’s like. Someone today asked me about it. Basically it’s your life. If your fortunate enough to be able to pay for them to be on full care somewhere then it makes it a little easier but if not at a minimum you see these animals every day, twice a day no matter what.
Your non horsey friends or family will never get it. People will often try to say “why not get rid of them.. they’re just a horse”.
I’m not gonna lie yes it can suck on the freezing cold pouring down raining days. However, this horse has been there for every big and little moment in my life for the past 3 years and hopefully the decades to come.
He’s seen me at my best and he’s been there at my worst, to throw my arms around and listen to him munch away on hay while I tell him about my crappy day.
People who haven’t had a horse will never know the feeling you get to see them whiney and run towards you on the field after they notice you’ve come to see them.
They’re more than “just a horse”. They’re often your entire life. You plan your days around their care and your life around their wellbeing.
Here’s to everyone’s “just a horse”. 🫶🏻

Do you find a lot of the horse world still works on the “force them into it right away or they’re broken” rule?
It’s a shame because it can very much derail a horse. Not ruin because everything is redeemable but it definitely provides a big set back.
I would like to introduce you guys to the new cute boy Nero. He is a Welsh cross that I have now had the pleasure of starting the process of backing for his lovely owner. Unfortunately he was definitely treated in with the rule above in a previous home so is quick to react to new situations.
However he has a super good brain and quickly picks up on new things so I see bright things for his future 🫶🏻.
We’ll be taking things at his pace and allowing him to adjust well so he is comfortable in every stage, teaching him to take time to think before reacting, and generally seeking a relaxed mind.

The level of rain that is hitting this winter has reached crazy status.
I know everyone is finding it hard to keep their horses from going crazy being stuck in all the hours of the day.
So try some of these..
🌼 Hack out.
If the weather allows it take your ponies for a nice stroll through the countryside. This can be done both under saddle and in hand. A great way to physically tire them a little as well as mentally since they can spend that time taking in their surroundings.
🌼 Got a young horse. Put it in the school with a buddy.
Young horses love nothing more than rough housing together. See if someone on your yard would be willing to buddy up and put their horse or horses in with yours to have some much needed herd interaction. They will spend the whole time playing and tiring themselves out.
🌼 Take them out the stable for a hand walk on the yard.
If your not certain about taking your horses on the lanes in hand then why not just walk around your yard with them. This will get them moving after a day spent mostly stationary and give them a little fresh air. You could then tie them up outside and give them some one to one time grooming.
🌼 Do some groundwork.
Groundwork can be a handy tool for building a relationship between you and your horse, but it can also help to address training problems. It is a good place to help horses learn to accept things that they might find scary. What better time to get them focusing on addressing any potential problems while working them mentally. You will be surprised how tired a horse can get from mental tasks. Remember to always seek the lick and chew!
Let me know what you have been doing on the days you can’t get your horses out into the field.
This was one of the days I got Aurum out hacking with a group of people from my yard. I of course being me forgot my tack so had to make up a bridle and bareback pad from spare parts. Always be savvy 😂.

We have made it into February.
Are you struggling with life right now.
You could be experiencing SAD. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a real condition!
This is a type of depression that happens during a certain season of the year—most often fall and winter. There is no clear cause of SAD. Less sunlight and shorter days are thought to be linked to a chemical change in the brain and may be part of the cause!
So if you’re feeling down. The weather can actually be to blame. I know this winter rain and cold is definitely putting me in a mood. It’s also causing a lot more illnesses and that’s not a joy either.
I miss being able to hack out in the sunshine and take my pony out and about enjoying adventures in the warmth.
But here’s the good news! Only 43 more days until Spring 🌼
We can do it. There’s a sunny light at the end of the tunnel.

So if you’ve seen any of my past posts related to Fynn you will know that he’s an anxiety riddled foal in the body of a heavy horse.
We love him but he can make life difficult if he’s not maintained in the right way.
I planned to be away for some of the winter so decided to give him some time off around September of last year. Since then he’s been chilling babysitting other horses.
The plans for this year will be to get him out competing, but not just with me as my sister would like to get him out too and since she has less ridden experience I want to make sure he’s his super good self not the anxious big giraffe.
Now the time has come to start bringing him back into work so we’re taking it slow with some lunging, in hand work, small ridden sessions and more importantly for this post HACKING.
We took him out for the first time, since his time off, on a hack Saturday. He was very spooky and on edge to the point where half way through since their were people doing construction I decided to pop off and walk him then get back in. No easy feat with a horse 17 hands tall…
Due to that reaction out hacking I’ve decided Fynn now needs to learn to start going out on his own again.
He did this while he was away with @whbt and came back a much nicer horse. I however do not have the super brilliant and safe hacking that Will has so I’ve decided until he’s less reactive to do this by long reining. The last thing I want to do after the last time with Aurum is be thrown on the road. 🤷♀️
Fynns going to incorporate some sort of hacking solo work into his routine weekly now until he calms down again.
He will realise he is perfectly capable once more and doesn’t need to rely on a horse taking the ‘mare’ role for him 😂.
Little add on… if your looking for help with any sort of dangerous horse or to send off your horse to be backed, look into @whbt.
He was amazing with Fynn when I was busy backing Aurum. There looks to have some super ex
What even is this weather. Can it please make up its mind as I am a complete fair weather only rider no lie 🤫

Happy 2 years Fynn!
Fynn was one of our biggest lessons in the horse world to not trust people. Two years ago.. When we went to view him he was totally calm and collected despite just the day before being separated from his companion horse of 9 years. We try thought brill he’s obviously a very calm collected horse.
How wrong we were.
The first ride I had when we got him he reared vertically up and down quickly while spinning. I managed to bail in time for him to smash himself into the side of the arena. That was a big red flag for me. We got in touch with the old owner. She blamed the fact that he hadn’t come with the saddle she wanted us to buy as extra.
We sent him to be re backed as I was backing my own youngster at the time and didn’t want to risk that process. Three months later we were basically told his old owner did a terrible job of breaking him and biting him and so he had had years of problems to work through. So he came back.. we asked if she would take him back… she said she would only take him back if she basically didn’t have to pay the money back. That was a big no. So we worked on him.
He did not care about people at all. He had huge separation anxiety and he didn’t know his own size so would barge through you. That was his three huge issues then there was things like not wanting a fly mask on, hating being sprayed, screaming if left stabled alone, riding with his head high as he was so hard in the mouth.
Two years later he loves everyone. He has hacked out loads and jumped at home. His schooling is hugely improved and he loves being with people as well as horses.

My baby pony turns 5 today 🥹 where has the time gone!
I remember going to see him and having to wait months for his arrival. Then all the trick training and liberty before I backed him. So many people saying I couldn’t. I could and I have. 5 years later we’ve already achieved so much and I am so proud of my little Oreo. Can’t wait for the future 🥰

Their journey started quite rocky and has many hurdles. The first time Terri Evans had a session with me she was so terrified of lucky even being stood near her and basically hid behind me.
Lucky has big issues with tight or enclosed spaces and has even barged her owner out the way resulting in a concussion in the past.
Now look at them both working on Lucky’s problem with tight spaces through trust, reassurance and relaxation. You can see the love they now have ❤️.

Who has unlimited trust for their first pony?
This is Samson, my mums Welsh D stallion. He was the first pony I learnt to properly ride on. It actually probably wasn’t the best mix now looking back as he was a bad napper and loved to throw in the odd rear 🙈. Typical Welsh really, has a big attitude.
Despite all this he is my most trusted pony, I have literally ridden him bridle-less on the field because I fancied it. Him not so much but I love his sass. No matter what he my rock pony that when things don’t go right with my youngster, I can get on and it feels like home.
He now is beloved by everyone who meets him as for a stallion he’s hugely affectionate and I mean look at his cute face ❤️
Who is your most trusted pony?
Let us talk negativity 💗
I have had a lot of clients recently telling me they have either faced negative comments regarding their approach to horsemanship or that they fear negative remmarks.
This in turn has led them to avoid certain situations or events where they could get a backlash or cause controversy.
I think it is sad that in an industry where there is so much potential to be supportive and inclusive, we still face such a lash of negativity even in the form of how we care for our animals.
I am of the opinion that if you are taking your animals' best interests at heart and doing everything out of care and welfare for them, then it can't be completely wrong. I'm sure we can all do better somehow because every day is a learning day and our horses are always going to teach us something.
Let me know if you've achieved a positive despite a negative experience or if you have given some positive support to those who have needed it 🩷❤️
Or maybe you would like to share you and your horses story of overcoming experiences to now be your best versions 🦄
These are just some of the awesome horses I have gotten to work this year, including my special boy himself 💫
This was my first proper year thanks to COVID and i could not have asked for more.
Unfortunately, there are still many not included as I'm not great at remembering to get footage.. new years resolution right there... 🙈
I am grateful for all the owners included here and not included for trusting me with your ponies, its lovely to see improvements from them and the owners 🥰
I'll try to be better at using my socials this year 🤞
