Such a gorgeous sky at the yard this morning.

I’ve finally pulled myself together a bit and joined the gym so early morning for me this morning to get all the ponies sorted, get to the gym and then get to work 🫣.

I decided since I was trying to get the ponies fitter I also should be getting fitter. I have also been taking less freelance work on now and concentrating more on our own horses. Though you will still see content of my favourite ponies here and there 😉.

It’s not easy to get all our horses worked and cared for, work full time, go to the gym, enjoy life and teach 😂. So although I am still teaching, I am being more selective in who I take onto teach now and limiting the time I have available to teach.

After all it’s important to take time to actually enjoy your life.

Mr Barns strikes again!

We headed out for his first outing today and he took it like an old pro. We loaded, travelled to the show and walked off calm and collected to have a look around while I groomed him off. This horse has not left the yard since he was transported there as a yearling but you wouldn’t have known it.

He stood chilled ringside until his class then behaved impeccably to compete. He could have done with a more enthusiastic trot instead of the tired slow one he did but can’t be too picky 😂. The judge didn’t place him high in the classes but he still came away with a red and two 3rds. We don’t care that the red was because he was the only one in that class 😂 he was a winner in our eyes from the very start!

He had people off the yard and the owners friends on the sidelines cheering and supporting him. The judge said he was the only class winner with such a big fan group 😂. She also said he behaved amazingly and he will go far in life with how mannerly he is.

You wouldn’t believe it was the same pony up for sale last year that bolted, bucked and threw legs. I sat and watched some other classes while he grazed next to me.

He loaded on the trailer and he waited for a good time while we all had some cake and something to drink. Then headed home, unloaded and got to go back on grass with his bestie.

The cool dude is always a winner in our eyes!

Just a horse.

From time to time people tell me “chill out, it’s just a horse” or “it’s a lot of money just for a horse.” They don’t understand the distance traveled, the time invested, or the costs incurred by “just a horse”.
Some of my proudest moments have occurred with “just a horse.”
Many hours have passed being my only company “just a horse”, but not for one moment did I feel despised. Some of my saddest moments have been because of “just a horse,” and on those gray days, the gentle touch of “just a horse” gave me comfort and the reason to get through the day.
If you also think “it’s just a horse”, then you’ll probably understand phrases like “just a friend”, “just a sunrise” or “just a promise.” “Just a horse” brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust and pure unbridled joy. “Just a horse” brings out the compassion and patience that make me a better person.
For “just a horse” I will get up early, take long rides and look forward to the future. So for me and people like me, it’s not “just a horse,” but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the memories of the past, and the absolute joy of the moment. “Just a horse” brings out the good in me and takes my thoughts away from myself and daily worries.
I hope one day they can understand that it’s not “just a horse”, but the one that gives me humanity and keeps me from being “just a human.” So the next time you hear the phrase “just a horse”, just smile because they “just don’t get it”.

Today’s adventure 🫶🏻

We decided to load up some ponies with friends and head to the rainbow trails 🌈.

It was such a lovely day! Upon arrival there are horse tie up areas as well as 3 corals to put your horses into. The tie ups reminded me of being in a western 😂.

The trails are all sign posted so you can choose the length of route you would like to hack. We went down and up different elevations and through all types of tracking. It really made the ponies think and have a little fun on their outing. And no cars! We actually didn’t see another person the whole 5 mile route we took!

At the end of the ride, the corals made a perfect resting spot for all the ponies to chill under some shade while we had some food and drink before heading home.

And the very best part… it’s all free!

Use it or lose as they say. So a a little idea to have a perfect trial riding day out.

“A young rider was lunging a horse when an old rider came close.
After having observed him, the old man asked the boy: Do you want to know the secret to communicate with your horse?
And the boy answered Yes.
So the old man closed his own hand into a fist and said to him: If you can open my fist you will learn the secret of communication..
Then the boy used his strength in any way possible by pinching, hitting, pulling, pushing...but he just couldn’t open the hand.
So he finally asked the old man: I can’t open it, but please tell me the secret to communicate with my horse...
So the old man answered: You could have simply asked me to do it...

It felt so nice to be out and about in the sunshine and to get the boys all out.

“Exploring the Equine Connection: Groundwork vs. Riding 🐴⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Did you know that groundwork can be just as important as riding when it comes to building a strong bond with your horse?

Groundwork exercises, such as lunging, obstacle training, Liberty and Long Lining can help improve communication, trust, and respect between you and your horse. These exercises also provide an opportunity to assess your horse’s physical condition and behavior before getting in the saddle. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
By incorporating groundwork into your training routine, you can enhance your horse’s responsiveness, balance, and overall wellbeing. It’s not just about riding – it’s about building a solid foundation of trust and partnership with your four legged friend. 🌿💫

Hi 👋

Little business update as I’ve found myself having to chase a few payments as of recently.

I will now be asking for payments for any freelance teaching or riding either before said appointment or on the day of.

This stops me having to chase people as well as losing out on money. I have someone who still owes for a lesson from last year.

In addition to that, anyone who does keep ignoring any notice for payment will be named and shamed to stop this occurring to others.

Freelance groom work will still be invoiced after the fact as I understand some things can change last minute. However I will start adding interest on to anyone outstanding after 14 days unless there is a previously agreed upon payment date.

Any cancellations will also now have to be at least 24 hours prior so I can fill that space.

Thanks for the support from anyone who does use my services and I’m sorry to have to start enforcing this.

🐴 SAMSON 🐴

Our little stud. The pony everyone is wary to meet then absolutely falls in love with.

Samson came from a family friend who was not able to keep him.

Our family took on the 7 month old c**t. We named him Samson. We grew up together and he was the first pony I helped back and get going. He was the first horse I learnt to properly ride on.

He is still entire yet you would never know it. He hacks out regularly with mares and is fielded next to them with no fuss. Anyone who is new to handling him is told prior that he is a stallion. There is usually the lack of belief to start in us telling them you would never know he was a stallion. Then they meet him and handle him and totally understand.

I still ride him, though as he is my mums horse she now has the ride on him more than I do since I have some big horses to also get ridden. Though every time I have any bad ride on the young ones I get to pop back on him and feel at home.
He’s a real dude who has children on him to ride and regularly teaches a young jockey.

The plan is to get him out and about this year competing and seeing the world now. And maybe in the future there will be some baby sams…

Peekaboo BONNIE. 💐

Funnily enough that’s her registered name. Next up of this roster of ponies we own is our only mare Bonnie. She has been introduced on the grid before but here’s an updated introduction.
Bonnie actually came into our lives through a special woman on our yard called Lynne. When I first got Aurum, Lynne was always on hand for helpful advice and to encourage me through showing and starting my business. She even was one of the first people to have me care for her horses, one being Bonnie.
Unfortunately Lynne became poorly with cancer so asked me to take over full care of her two ponies while she went through treatment. One being Bonnie and the other was her showing pony. She bought Bonnie as something safe and reliable to ride in her older years after having to retire her old ridden horses.
Lynne was a determined and set in her ways lady who knew exactly what she was looking for. She said her requirements were that she could get on it from the ground, it was safe to handle and it could hack alone. She was never a fan of waiting on people to get ready to hack.
Lynne went through treatment and started to improve but still got easily tired so would visit and try to help with her ponies while I had main care. Then one day she came up to the yard determined that it was the day she would get back in her Bonnie. She did. Unfortunately it was her last ride as she collapsed of Bonnie and passed away.
We couldn’t see Bonnie go elsewhere so we took her on and she’s still known as Lynne’s pony. She’s cheeky and full of character but we wouldn’t want her any other way.

She is loved by everyone she meets and luckily since we share her care with another family on the yard she has plenty of people to love on her.

Owned by- Technically my parents, but always Lynne Startin.

The next pony to introduce… the main man himself.

👑 AURUM ⚜️

We had a number of family horses over the years already but I wanted my “own” horse. Only took me 10 years of begging.
Eventually my Dad gave in and said he would get me a horse as a Xmas and bday gift combined.
So I started looking. I had my eye on a few different ones, more of the sporty sort. Then my Dad mentioned we should go to our farrier and family friends stud. I knew he bred Welsh cobs and as much as I love our Samson I did not want another welsh cob. So I refused. Multiple times.
I was eventually tricked into visiting on another reason and just asked to look around their yard.
While we were looking around my Dad started talking about what I was looking for and the breeder mentioned they had something they had been keeping hidden that was a bit sportier. They had bred their Welsh stallion to one of their older competition Warmbloods. As the first attempt at a part bred had not gone as well they were going to keep him hidden from buyers and let him run a few years before revealing him.
However I fell in love with him instantly. We bought him that day and I had to wait a few months for him to be castrated and ready for me to have him. Since then we have attended shows both in hand and under saddle including royal Welsh. I have trained him at liberty and tricks. His favourite is to lie down of course. He was backed and now rides without tack and generally is one cool dude.

He turns 6 this year and just tops himself year after year. He is such an amazing boy that the parental match has been replicated a few times to get more like him 🫶🏻.

I’ve come to the realisation that there is a lot of Aurum featuring on my page, so I have decided to do a pony a day post.

I will start by introducing all our ponies, then ponies i get the joy of working with. This will also give the newer followers a chance to get to know the ponies they’re watching.

Beginning with PHOENIX. 🔥

The idea of Phoenix actually originated in a traffic jam. I was driving my sister somewhere and we got stuck in traffic from an accident. She started showing me funny horse videos on TikTok and some included foals. I turned to her and said “why don’t you get a foal?”. So we went onto Facebook to look at foals for sale.
A week later we are still sending eachother horses we see on Facebook. Then I come across a young traditional cob for sale and tell her to get in touch with the seller.
Unfortunately that cob was already taken however the seller mentioned he just picked up a young Welsh D C**t. So that week we headed down to south wales to go see the young boy.
She loved him instantly, even with him being completely feral and looking extremely scruffy. She bought him then and there and a week later he was delivered.

Apparently the backstory was that he was born and thrown out with his mum until time came for weaning. He came in to be weaned and the owners decided he was too feral for them to have the time to sort. So they sold him to the second party who was our seller.
Boy was he feral. He had only had a headcollar forced on so we could not change this when he arrived. He also didn’t trust people so would not be caught. It took hours of waiting to eventually catch him. If he was pinned in at all, he would run through all fencing and take it all down.
Other than being around people when born and transited, he had nothing done with him. Since he has learnt to be caught, lead nicely, groomed, have his headcollar off while out, rugged (that was a dramatic episode), feet picked and more.

He is now a year and a half and still currently entire. He loves to spend his time out playing with the other horses and learning his herd position.

Winter is hitting hard.

I know I have already had enough of the freezing weather and cannot wait for summer to show itself. If your feeling the same, here’s some useful winter tips;

🐴Stock up! If you can, bulk buy good quality bedding, feed and hay/haylage at the start of the winter. This will mean you are not caught short if the weather takes a turn for the worst and stockists are short of supply.

🐴If you have to hack on the roads, make sure you have plenty Hi-Viz for both you and your horse. At this time of year, yellow is the best colour to wear to be seen.

🐴Insulate water pipes to prevent freezing or fill one or two big water containers in the evening so that you have fresh water every morning regardless of the temperature.

🐴Invest in some winter jodpurs to keep you warm. These tend to be fleece lines and water resistant.

🐴Select a good quality bedding material. If they’re going to be spending a large amount of time in the stable, you want to make sure you are taking care of their respiratory system, hooves and joints in particular.

🐴Get yourself a pair of good quality, waterproof over-trousers to wear around the yard. These will not only keep you dry but will act as a wind-block helping to keep you warm when doing outside jobs such as poo-picking.

🐴Towel dry wet legs to help reduce the risk of mud fever. Applying Pig Oil and Sulpher to dry, clean legs also helps to repel water and stop mud sticking (but always make sure you do a test patch first).

🐴Feed a soaked fibre feed to increase water intake when the temperatures drop. You can also use warm water when it’s really cold. This has the added benefit of increasing fibre intake which produces heat during digestion – it’s like an internal radiator!

🐴Give yourself a break! If the weather is ghastly and you’re going to be miserable riding, chances are your horse is too. Give yourselves a day off!

Let me know your thoughts winter survival tips 🥶❄️

Controversial post incoming…

🐴 Training Aids.

The topic that brings equestrians together worldwide & not for those kind hearted reasons. Using a training aid verses not using a training aid, a subject that can instantly cause a debate in a room full of equestrians.

It is not uncommon to see people getting torn to shreds, with extremely harsh comments, over the use of training aids. When most of the time they were seeking advice.

Personally I think training aids should be used in moderation to help with certain aspects of your horses training. Always keeping in mind that undoing the damage of over use or wrong use of certain training aids is worse then fixing the problem you were using them for to begin with.

If used correctly, a training aid can be an incredibly beneficial compliment to a horse’s training and conditioning plan. The key is to choose a training aid that complements how you would ride or train your horses, and that supports you in targeting the weaknesses that you are trying to combat – be it your horse’s or your own.

Here’s just some of the pros and cons I have come up with..
✔️Improves acceptance of contact
✔️Beneficial for difficult horses
✔️Help your horse to carry themselves correctly
✔️Improves your horses way of going
✔️Building up a topline
✔️Helps to lunge effectively
✖️Provide a False Outline
✖️They are not a Quick fix to riding problems
✖️Develops an unatural headset if used all the time in training

Personally using the bungee had helped with Fynn. He was so bad in the mouth from his previous owner he refused to accept the bit in any way, due to learnt pain, resulting in throwing his head up or eventually rearing at any contact. The bungee allowed me to push him through his dangerous tantrums and for him to realise after having his teeth sorted the contact of the bit was no longer hurting him. He could work into it.

It’s that time of year where everyone is struggling after Xmas to make ends meet, get through the drooling winter and fight through the never ending list of jobs.

That’s no exception for anyone but most importantly, rescues find this time of year particularly difficult. Funding dips, rehoming becomes non existent and animals coming into their care increases.

Companion horses are the types least likely to be rehomed and rescues often become overrun. If you have the space maybe consider helping by fostering or adopting a companion pony. Your horse would appreciate the company and that pony would appreciate the chance to be loved.

Rehoming is a big ask so if you want to help but can’t provide a space for a horse or pony, consider going without a coffee one day and donating that money instead?

There are plenty of horse charity’s tagged in the last slide of this post but also look into your local small equine charities that may be struggling this time of year.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas 🎄 and has an amazing New Year 🎉. Aurum has been enjoying the food and lazy time over this festive period.

Moving into the new year however new year’s resolutions can feel a little daunting. Not everyone can find the time or inclination to run a marathon, read War and Peace, or travel the world.

So to stop you feeling overwhelmed by the rush of self-improvement, we have pulled together 10 resolutions which we think you’ll be able to keep in 2022:

1. Clean out your grooming kit before the end of January — and every month thereafter.

2. Read a training book by a famous rider and try at least one exercise in it.

3. Go to an event to spectate that you haven’t been to before.

4. Be organised about when your horse needs routine health care such as teeth checks, vaccinations and worming and book early.

5. Watch the warm-up at a competition, rather than the ring, and try to pick up three tips you can use in your own training.

6. Get a skipping rope and improve your own fitness by skipping at least three days a week.

7. Scrub out your horse’s feed and water buckets or troughs more frequently.

8. Sort out tack and equipment you no longer use and sell it online.

9. Do something for an equestrian charity.

10. Volunteer at a local show or horse trials for a day. You’ll probably learn something and have fun!

This gorgeous boy is going to be coming up for sale on behalf of the owners.

I will be giving him a clean up and putting a sales video together this weekend so 👀.

He is 2 rising 3, already measuring above 14.2 on the stick.
Absolutely lovely cob who has had quite a bit of handling.
Can be lively as is still young so please keep that in mind. Not suitable for novices.
Up to date on teeth, vacs and feet.
Already had tack on very recently and did not bat an eye. Will make someone a lovely ridden cob.

Low 4 figures starting with a 3.

It’s not uncommon for me to teach one lesson to a student and then, to never see her again. I say ‘her’ because it’s very rarely, in my neck of the woods, that men will take basic horsemanship lessons.

I may have thought that we got along well and that my teaching had been respectful and encouraging. I may have seen a distinct improvement in how the horse is working and the rapport between horse and rider from the lesson’s start, to its end. All this and yet, I know that this lesson will very likely be a one ‘n’ only.

The simple reason is that not everyone is ‘our people’. We all have our own goals.

This can be a hard lesson to learn but if we’re in the business of educating, learn it, we must. Everyone who is looking for a teacher is looking for something different. Most everyone who is teaching is offering similar information, with a unique delivery. A surprising number of people want to ride with a particular name and then, move on to ride with the next. Most of us just want to make the greatest strides in whatever time is availed us.

I’m a person who teaches little more than the basics. Over and over, again. I have spent my whole life with horses, polishing up fundamentals that I can remember first learning four, even five, decades ago. Some things that I pass along, I learned last week.

I’ve learned that maybe half of the people who call me and haul in for lessons, are finished after the first one. This used to bother me, until I realized that it was a thing. That the average beginning-to-intermediate rider craves going on to the higher levels quickly, while the advanced riders, naturally in the minority of people taking lessons, want to nail the basics until they become second nature. Until they become like breathing.

Until the fundamentals can be done with a maximum of feeling and a minimum of conscious thought.

Now, it’s true that the more advanced riders are generally always bringing on young or green horses. This keeps the same old, same old feeling ever fresh. When you are constantly in the realm of making the next good horse, there is very little time or opportunity to feel bored. I say, tired of doing the same little exercises? Show up in a strange arena on a spicy three-year-old!

Whenever we ride with a new teacher, there should be a lot of going back to basics. This means that the horse and rider who come ‘just to work on lead changes’ may well spend the entire hour working on rider position and body control. If this gets going in the right direction, we might spend time on improving bend, or relaxation of the horse, or acceptance of the bridle, or…

Often, their goal isn’t even on the menu that first day. It might be visited the next lesson later, or maybe—and this happened long ago, with my own teacher and a running fool of an off-track Thoroughbred—the next year!

Slowing things down isn’t a stalling tactic, meant to make your coach more money, nor is it usually an oversight. Those of us who teach this way tend to solve major problems with little fixes. We’re big on seeking the 1% improvement with each ride. One student, after being gently reminded of this, stopped dead in her tracks.

“You mean, I have to work on this, at least one hundred times?!” Surprisingly, she became a regular student.

I may ask you to spend a disappointing amount of time at the walk, just guiding the horse, shaping different parts of his body with your own. Maybe, we’ll seek sustained cantering without any contact whatsoever, until the horse learns how to handle his own body and speed control, without rider input. Until you learn to leave him alone. This fundamental step isn’t pretty, or graceful, and it has precious little to do with riding the horse ‘on the bit’.

When we’re peeling layers, it isn’t uncommon to have the feeling that we’re actually going backwards. Many times, things get a bit ugly before they get better.

As a naturally ‘feely’ rider, the geometry of riding in a school never fails to challenge me. Always trying to marry sensation with precision, I have never once schooled my horses and grown bored. Never once.

Long ago, I learned that the better my horse understands me, the better and safer we will be, out in the real world.

To my horse and me, this fundamental work represents the deposits in our joint account. We will draw upon them, time and again. I know, all too well, what happens should I make only withdrawals upon this same horse, for the sensitive personality who does nothing but mentally and physically demanding work, day after day, will soon start to come undone.

The longer we’ve ridden and the more we know—the more ‘expert’ we become, if we even dare breathe such a word—it seems the more we’ll crave revisiting our basics. The students who come back to me, year after year, tend to be those who have ridden for a long time, people who want to go back and make a study of their foundation. We ride, experiment, discuss. This is especially true with the same six or eight students who join me weekly to ride with our own trusted mentor. We know what’s coming. We hear his voice in our heads, before he speaks. We fine tune, we improve, we do it all again with the next young horse…

At first, riding is all about the destination. We want to arrive already, before we run out of time! By the end, we’re entirely immersed in the journey. Whether we’re opening a gate from the saddle, cantering to a lead change, or loading our horse in the trailer, it’s no longer enough for us that we can…

By going back to our basics, we can see to which point we are right and where, exactly, we begin to go wrong. Whatever our questions and answers, are we in full agreement, with full understanding? Are we simpatico? Are we correct? Are we soft?
