⚫️ He is wearing a black collar with a magnetic barrel attached. Unfortunately he’s not microchipped.

🩺 He has received some treatment but is in need of some TLC

🚨Missing Cat 🚨

We’ve had a female tortoiseshell cat handed in. It was found late last night on the Moffat road in Dumfries. It has unfortunately sustained some injuries but is stable and doing ok.

A couple of weeks ago we held our practice open day! 🐶🥳🐱

It was great to see everyone getting involved and learning more about what goes on at the practice! We hope this will inspire the next generation of local vets 👧🏼🩺👦🏼

We had wonderful sessions from Claire's Cool Creatures 🐍🦔🐢 delicious food from the Lunch Box in Gretna 🥪🧁 and great stalls from local charities - Dumfriesshire and Cumbria Greyhound Rescue, Alfie's Dream For Greyhounds, Eskdale & District Cats Protection, and Lost Dogs Dumfries & Galloway 🐕🐈

Thank you to everyone who came along and helped make this day a success 👏
A big thanks also to our team members who kept everything running smoothly, and staff pets for coming along too! 🐐🐹🐾

🐍 Adder Bites 🐍

The European Adder is a protected species and the only venomous snake in the UK 🇬🇧 unfortunately we sometimes see dogs with Adder bites at this time of year in the Dumfries & Galloway area 🤕

Adders are often found in woodland, moorland or hill side areas. They are naturally shy, so usually only bite in self defence 😟 dogs are often bitten on the face or legs when sniffing/playing in their habitat 🌲🌾

Signs can develop within minutes or up to an hour later, and include:
🔺 Swelling around the bite wound which can become dark in colour
🔺 A couple of puncture wounds close together
🔺 Agitation and discomfort - dogs can go lame if the bite is on their leg
🔺 Lethargy
🔺 In severe cases, vomiting, diarrhoea, pale gums and collapse. If the bite is on the face, severe swelling can lead to breathing difficulties

If you think your dog may have been bitten, we advise taking them to the vet ASAP so they can be treated 🩺
This often involves treatment for shock and administration of anti-venom 💉

In the meantime, stay calm, try to keep your pet still and leave the bite alone ❌

PET TRAVEL TO THE EU 🐶🇪🇺🐱

If you are travelling to the EU on holiday and planning on taking your pet, you must arrange issue of an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) by your vet 🩺🐾

Please see below as a brief outline of things you need to do to allow your pet to travel with you to the European Union ⬇️

Please contact the practice to arrange your AHC appointment, ideally at least 1 month before travel ☀️

We’re excited to support this year’s Rabbit Awareness Week 🐰

Not only do rabbits require an appropriate diet, they also have specific environmental needs 🏠 these needs must be met in order to keep your bunny healthy, happy and mentally stimulated 😃

We are excited to support this year’s Rabbit Awareness Week 🐰 this year we are raising awareness of the importance of a rabbits diet!

Feeding an inappropriate diet can lead to multiple health issues, including dental disease, gastrointestinal problems and obesity 🦷🩺

A rabbits diet should be at least 85% hay 🌾 10% fresh greens 🥬🌱 and 5% high quality concentrate pellets 🥣

Fly strike is a common problem around this time of year, particularly affecting rabbits ☀️🐜

This occurs when flies lay their eggs in damp/wet/warm environments - often around the rear end 💩 The eggs then hatch and the maggots will burrow into the skin and eat the flesh, which can rapidly lead to illness, shock and death 😢

Rabbits are at higher risk if they have…

❗️Difficulties cleaning themselves due to obesity, mouth or joint pain
❗️Poor diets that create sticky faeces or diarrhoea
❗️Urinary issues due to the moist environment created by urine
❗️Open wounds

‼️ A reminder of the change in microchipping laws in England, coming into force 1 week today ‼️

While not compulsory for cats in Scotland yet, we still advise you get this done 🐱 microchipping is the most effective way to reunite lost pets with their owners 🏡🥰

🐈‍⬛ Change in microchipping laws 🐈‍⬛

New rules come into force in England from Monday 10th June, which state:
- All cats must be microchipped by this date 🐈
- From this date any kittens must be chipped by the time they are 20 weeks old 🐱
- Cat owners must ensure their contact details are up to date on the registered database 📱

Owners found not to have microchipped their cat will have 21 days to do so, and may face a fine of up to £500 ❗️

Microchipping involves placing a small chip (about the size of a grain of rice) under the skin. It is a simple, quick procedure that can be done during a routine vet appointment 🩺

While this is not compulsory for cats in Scotland yet, we still strongly advise you get it done 🐈

It is estimated that 1.2 million cats enter an animal shelter in the UK every year 😥 microchipping is the most effective way to identify lost pets and reunite them with their owners 🏡❤️
