THE PLACEBO EFFECT IN HORSES!

This is an interesting comment followning the discussion of the pacebo effect in animals on the recent webinar.

"I just wanted to tell you about a mare I owned a few years ago. She was a 16.3hh ¾ TB ‘old fashioned’ stamp of a mare who was my hunter and then retired to be a broodmare and part time hack. During her retirement I found that if I made a fuss about a leg – and say you were there too, and we each picked up the particular leg and felt it, ran our hands down it, hummed and haa-d, checked it again, discussed it, I could guarantee you any money she would walk off lame on that leg! It didn’t matter which leg or part of the leg – joint, tendon, or foot - you focused on she would move off hopping lame! I didn’t do it often enough to make it a ‘party trick’ so I don’t think that was it, but it was entertaining and fascinated those who did see it."
