A truly rare, large species of Aphaenogaster hailing from Madagascar 🇲🇬. Queens and workers are mainly a dark, glossy red colour with their gasters being fully black 🖤❤️⁣
⁣
𝘈.𝘴𝘸𝘢𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘥𝘢𝘮𝘪 is one of the larger 𝘈𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘨𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 as queens reach 14-15mm and workers an impressive 12-13mm, not to mention their strinkingly long legs which almost make them look like they are suspended off the ground ☁️⁣
⁣
Colonies in the wild are often found fairly deep underground (1-2m) however their population size rarely exceeds 1500-2000 individuals. Despite this, workers are extremely well adapted to their environment and are considered to be opportunistic 😏 foragers, taking in different food items from insects to seeds as well as extra florar nectars. ⁣
⁣
Interestingly, they maintain a type of mutualistic relationship with a variety of snakes, that’s right.. 🐍! Their deep nests offer perfect shelter for the snakes from predators and the natural elements, in turn, the snakes ward off potential predators that could threaten the ants. Locals will often refer to the snakes as the “𝐀𝐧𝐭’𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫”.

𝘔𝘺𝘳𝘮𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘢 𝘱𝘺𝘳𝘪𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘪𝘴 (𝐆𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐝𝐨𝐠 𝐀𝐧𝐭)⁣
⁣
One of the largest Bull ant species in Australia - 𝘔𝘺𝘳𝘮𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘢 𝘱𝘺𝘳𝘪𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘪𝘴 are most certainly not for the feint hearted. Queen ants of this species often reach an astonishing 24-26mm in size, with workers also reaching lengths of 19-25mm 🥹⁣
⁣
However, it’s not only its size and large frame that make this a fearsome species of ant. In fact, 𝘔𝘺𝘳𝘮𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘢 𝘱𝘺𝘳𝘪𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘪𝘴 have unusually large eyes 👁️ which can be easily seen with the naked eye. These allow queens and workers to distiniguish objects that are anywhere between 5-80cms in their field of vision 😱 ⁣
⁣
Coupled with their long, strongly toothed mandibles and a powerful stinger, it’s no wonder why this species is so well adapted to its environment 🇦🇺🦘

𝘔𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘰𝘳 𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘳𝘪 - 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐧𝐭⁣
⁣
A rarer type of harvester ant species found in Southern Europe. This species is characterised by its glossy black colouration 🖤✨⁣
⁣
𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬? Like many species belonging to the 𝘔𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘰𝘳 genus, they actually do just that! These little critters will form several metre non-stop lines of workers carrying plant seeds and husks from A (source of seeds) to B (back to nest). Usually from dawn till dusk! It gets even more interesting! 😏⁣
⁣
Harvested seeds aren’t actually just collected and stored. In order to become useful to the colony, the workers (usually those of the media caste) will deshell the pulp from the husk and chew this, combining it with their own saliva and enzymes to create a type of ‘ant bread’. This is then fed to their youngsters, the larvae! 😯🍞⁣

After years of testing different leaves we are now able to grow in-house, one of our leafcutter’s firm favourites, the broad, supple and easy to cut leaves of 𝘈𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘶𝘴 𝘮𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘴, also known as “Bear Breeches” 🐻⁣
⁣
It is an excellent source of foliage for your growing leafcutter ant colony. We find these to be a firm favourite amongst Atta spp. especially although Acromyrmex spp. are also very fond of it too. ⁣
⁣
This fresh bundle, directly harvested from our grounds is extremely handy during the winter months as this grows readily during the Winter and Spring when other sources of food become scarce. ⁣
⁣
It is recommended to offer your leafcutter ants a variety of plants to ensure that they are able to thrive properly. In most cases, colonies will prefer fresh leaves over dried alternatives but we find that a combination of the both ensures that the colonies do not become as ‘bored’ or picky over one single source.⁣

The Raspberry Leaves 🍃🥬 mix is an excellent source of foliage for your growing leafcutter ant colony. We find these to be a great supplement to an existing leafcutter colony’s diet. ⁣

This dried mix becomes extremely handy during the winter months when sourcing fresh leaves and flowers becomes quite a daunting task, especially in the UK. ⁣
⁣
It is recommended to offer your leafcutter ants a variety of plants to ensure that they are able to thrive properly. In most cases, colonies will prefer fresh leaves over dried alternatives but we find that a combination of the both ensures that the colonies do not become as ‘bored’ or picky over one single source.⁣

Building an Outworld for our Harvester Ants ⁣ ⁣ 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬: Messor barbarus⁣ ⁣ 𝐎𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐧: 🇫🇷⁣ ⁣ 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐮𝐦: eXplorer I Outworld⁣ ⁣ Some Ant Keepers prefer to use an “outworld and tube(s)” setup when the colony is still young and fairly small in numbers. The idea is that the tube will serve as the primary nesting area whilst the outworld will provide an environment for the workers to scout and forage for food.⁣ ⁣ This can be a preferable alternative than feeding inside a test tube where workers can escape or become stressed, especially when the foundation starts to really grow and the second generation of workers emerge 🐜⁣ ⁣ 𝘈𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘴𝘪𝘻𝘦𝘥!
