This month we are putting the Eye in Pride. Eyes come in the full rainbow of colours all decided by the amount of melanin produced in the iris. However these red eyes belong to albino animals that do not produce any pigment at all. Instead the iris is translucent allowing the red from the blood vessels to show through.

Friday is Eye-day! Have you noticed how some animals appear to have glow in the dark eyes? What you are actually seeing is the reflection of light hitting the tapetum lucidum layer in the eye. This internal reflection allows any small amount of light in the environment to to maximised and therefore increasing their ability to see at low light levels.

Friday is Eye-day! One of the commonest problems we see at the clinic is entropian, This is a congenital problem where the eyelids roll inwards, causing the lashes to scratch the surface of the eye. This is extremely painful and needs to be surgically corrected.
Entropian is rarely seen in cats and most often in dog breeds with facial skin folds such as shar-pei and bulldogs,

We are back with the latest Friday is Eyeday, I know you missed us!!
The surface of the eye is called the cornea. It plays a similar role to skin on the rest of our body, providing a water tight, protective layer that keeps out bacteria and prevents dehydration.
Just like our skin, the cornea can heal itself after injury, but how can we protect the eye while it heals? In some cases we can place a plain contact lens on the eye to act as a bandage!!

Friday is Eye-day! One of the very first patients we saw at the clinic this week was Clover, a geriatric rabbit that lives with our Head Nurse Liz.
Clover has blocked tear ducts, a common problem with rabbits. This can lead to discomfort and infection if not treated. Fortunately Clover’s eyes were otherwise healthy and Liz can manage her ongoing treatment at home. Good luck Clover 🤞🐰

Friday is Eye-day! Our friends at Mimi’s Rodent Rescue posted a video this week of a rat ‘boggling’. Although it can look quite alarming, it is actually a sign that your rat is very happy and relaxed. Chilled out rats grind their front teeth, called bruxing, which can lead to boggling if very enthusiastic. Just like hamsters and pugs the eyes sit very shallow in the skull so movements in the jaw can result in moving the eyes!

Friday is Eye-day! Today we are talking cataracts. Just like people, cloudy deposits solidify in the eye as part of the aging process. Sadly they can not be prevented and eventually lead to sight loss. As they develop slowly many pets cope amazingly well with reduced vision. Cataracts can be removed only at specialist referral centres, which we will be happy to organise for your pet.
