A microchip is a small computerised chip, about the size of a grain of rice, that is implanted under the skin usually around the scruff of the neck. This provides a unique code that acts as permanent ID and helps to reunite lost kitties with their families and prevent thefts (both intentional and accidental!). As of June 10th it will be UK law to have cats and kittens over the age of 20 weeks microchipped. Fines of £500 will be in place if owned cats are not chipped after this date. The cost of microchipping is covered in adoption fees from shelters. Otherwise it’s an affordable procedure, between £20-30 per cat. It is no more painful than an injection and does not require recovery time.
