Dewclaws! They are IMPORTANT! Many dog breeders routinely, and without much thought, amputate puppies' front dewclaws when the pups are 3-5 days of age. Why? The thought is to prevent potential injuries, such as tears of the digit, later in life. BUT do you realize that the dewclaw is a FUNCTIONAL, IMPORTANT digit? I am thankful that my own dog's breeder did not amputate Dunkin's front dewclaws. Do you also know that with appropriate exercises, the muscles of the dewclaw can be strengthened to help promote and maintain appropriate function and close apposition of the dewclaw to the side of the paw? Below is an article by a friend and colleague, Dr. Chris Zink, that explains the importance, anatomy, and function of the front dewclaw.
"Do the Dew(claws)?
by Chris Zink, DVM PhD DACVSMR
As a veterinary sports medicine specialist, I work extensively with canine athletes, developing rehabilitation programs for injured dogs or dogs that required surgery due to performance-related injuries. I have seen many dogs, especially field trial/hunt test and agility dogs, that have chronic carpal arthritis, frequently so severe that they must be retired or at least carefully managed for the rest of their careers. I noticed that very few of those dogs had dewclaws and began to wonder whether these appendages might, in fact, protect a dog from injuries. What I learned might surprise you.
The Anatomy of Dewclaws
Miller's Guide to the Anatomy of the Dog, a veterinary anatomy text, has an excellent figure depicting the muscular anatomy of the distal forelimb. There are 2 functional muscles, the extensor pollicis longus et indicis proprius and flexor digitorum profundus, which are attached to the front dewclaw by 4 tendons (references in blog). Each of those muscle/tendon units has a different function in movement. That means that if you cut off the dew claws, you are preventing the muscles that were attached to the dewclaws from functioning.
In contrast, rear limb dewclaws do not have muscle/tendon attachments, so their removal might be appropriate, except in the breeds such as Briards and Beauceron in which they should be retained.
Dewclaws Do Have Functions
If there are muscles and tendons attached to the dewclaws, then they most likely have a function. Broadly speaking, dewclaws have at least two different functions:
1. Grasp the ground when the dog is turning to prevent torque on the forelimb. Each time the front foot lands on the ground, particularly when the dog is cantering or galloping (see Figure 2), the dewclaw is in touch with the ground. If the dog then needs to turn, the dewclaw actively digs into the ground to stabilize the lower leg and prevent torque. In Figure 3 you can clearly see the dewclaw of a Corgi herding a sheep extended, ready to grip the ground. And in the image at the top of this article, you can see the dewclaws of a dog extended, ready to grip the water!
Do the Dew(claws)?
If a dog doesn't have dewclaws, the leg will twist on its axis, creating increased pressure on the carpal bones, as well as the elbow, shoulder and toes. A lifetime of this kind of torque and the result can be carpal arthritis or injuries to and subsequent arthritis in other joints of the forelimb, such as the elbow, shoulder, and toes. Remember, the dog is participating in the activity regardless, so there will be concussive pressures on the leg, and if the dewclaw does not help to stabilize the leg, those pressures will be transmitted to other areas of the leg, especially the joints.
2. Grip objects. We have all seen dogs using their dewclaws to grip an object such as a ball or bone (Figure 4). I've even seen many photos of agility dogs gripping the teeter for stability (Figure 5). But did you know that the dewclaws' gripping ability can, in fact, save your dog's life? Check out the video "Dewclaws Do Have a Purpose" for "gripping" views of dogs attempting to get out of water onto ice without the help of those ice picks on the inside of their legs. The video also shows dogs using their dewclaws to grip the ice and escape from a potentially fatal situation. I have known several dogs that drowned after falling through ice in the winter. None of them had dewclaws. If they had, perhaps they would have survived and spared their owners the incredible heartache of watching their dogs die unnecessarily.
Arguments for Removing Dewclaws
1. The dewclaws will get injured. This is the most common reason I hear for removing dewclaws. A friend of mine had such a severe dewclaw injury in one of her dogs that she swore she would remove them on all the dogs she bred subsequently.
But the data indicate that dewclaws are not injured very often. A study published in 2018 showed that the dewclaw was the LEAST likely toe to be injured in agility dogs, in which landing and turning from jumps and other obstacles put the toes at risk for injuries. Thus, it makes no sense to remove the dewclaws because of risk of injury. And, of course, no one would consider removing the 5th digits in the front feet, which are by far the most commonly injured toe.
2. Owners forget to trim the dewclaws. Surely this is a matter of education. Do we really want to remove a functioning digit in all dogs, just because some owners need to be reminded that they must remember to trim the dewclaws?
3. Dewclaws make the forelimb look less straight when viewed from the front in conformation. The AKC states: "The breed standard describes the characteristics of the ideal
dog to perform the function for which it was bred." While we could have long discussions about the veracity of this statement, it is interesting to note that there are VERY few breed standards that require dewclaw removal. I know of only one - the Vizsla breed standard.
A Plea
So, here's a plea to retain dogs' dewclaws. They are a functioning digit. They are the toe least likely to be injured. Isn't this enough to convince us not to do the dewclaws?"

This morning. Some woman took pictures of me walking down the road with my dogs. I stopped to pick up one of my dogs poo's. When i looked behind me there was a woman with a buggy and a child walking next to her that had stopped at the end of the road to take pictures of me and my dogs. I have no idear why. I was a good 60 feet away from her and going in the opposite direction. My dogs were minding their own business. Louie and sonja were on lead. Charlie was off lead straggling along behind me as he does. If anyone sees any pictures posted on fb today or anywhere else can you please messege me with the details of the post. Many thanks

SPOTTER.... this is Cooper with one of his owners. In this video, they are working on the heel position. sometimes it's hard to spot the behaviour you're looking for and even harder to mark that in time without hesitating and losing the initial moment you wish to mark. so I like to incorporate a spotter. someone who's watching from the sidelines. It's the spotter's job to look for the desired behaviour and click so the handler can mark and reward as soon as they hear the clicker. which enables them to mark more efficiently and capture that behaviour without hesitation. do you use a spotter in your training.?? #dogtraining #dogtrainingtips #canecorso #canecorsoofinstagram #Clicker #positivereinforcement #building
this is Orzech. a mali cross GSD. this dog had been to two previous trainers. the first said, "Aggressive dog, euthanise". the second said "aggressive dog, prong collar and muzzle and a lifetime of management". I performed a behavioural assessment back in Feb this year and said "This is not an aggressive dog, this is a fearful dog." and we got to work. laying foundations inside the home and outside on the lead. setting clear boundaries. which helped to change Orzech's mindset. we also swapped out the tool. we ditched the prong collar and opted for a grott, which is a 4mm slip collar. which took away a lot of frustration and the negative experience when she set eyes on another dog or human. some dogs do well on prong collars but for some, the collar can be a catalyst. like pouring petrol on an already raging inferno. once we had the foundations and boundaries in place. we could then strip the aggressive charade away, (I say charade because the dog was using aggression to hide her true emotive state, FEAR.) leaving the true emotions on full display. then we worked on controlled exposure and stress inoculation. today orzech is a very differant dog. she can cope qnd process her emotions around what used to be her triggers, humans and dogs. she can engage with her owner thro obediennce and play around these triggers and be comfertable. this is real world dog training. no fancy tricks. no gimics. no magic wand. just good old fashioned hard work, consistency and dedication. building that relationship of good foundations, and they say balanced training ruines the relationship. infact it makes the relationship stronger. i could not be prouder of this team. im very happy with their progress. #aggressivedog #fearfuldog #fear #aggression #Mali #malinois #dogsofinstagram #dogs #dog #selfgrowth #dogtrainersofinstagram #dogtrainer #dogtraining #balanceddogtraining #balance #relationships #relationshipgoals
Can your dog walk past other dogs in the street without reacting? This is Ozzy. His owners came to me because their walks were becoming increasingly stressful. Ozzy's reactivity was getting worse by the day. We booked them in Straight away and got to work. We placed them on one of our JL-K9 training packages, which got them to a point where they could attend my reactivity classes. Where we further the training across multiple environments with different stimuli to proof little Ozzy's work. Now they can enjoy nice peaceful walks in parks, towns & city centres and out in the countryside. Even when a space-invading off lead dog appears from nowhere. All the dogs in this video were reactive. Someone said to me recently that In certain circles I need to prove myself before my words hold any weight. The fact is that if you have to prove yourself then you're probably in the wrong circle. I am not one to talk a good game. That's never been me. I'm also not one to chase to be accepted into the "cool gang". I let the dogs under me do the talking. You're only as good as your client's dogs. Not your dog, the dog that you spend every day, day in, day out with. The results you have with your own dog are not a reflection of your skill set. The reflection comes from how well you can train other people and their dogs. That's the real skill. There are lots of people out there posing as dog trainers without any real work on their social media at all. Or just pictures of client's dog or just videos of their own dogs. These people are not trainers. They are hobbyists or enthusiasts. There's a huge difference in training your own dog and being able to train dog owners and there dogs. Living in the city means a lot of behaviors that dogs produce can be life threatening. That doesn't mean that the dog is going to drop down dead. What it does mean is that those behaviors can cause owners to rehome the dog. Using rescues or rehoming centers. Places that do not employ trainers with the skill set to help those dogs. So the dogs are passed from home to home because the owners and rescues centers cannot solve the dogs behavioral issues. After a period of time those dog will inevitably be euthanised due to those behavioral issues that could have been resolved had the owners gone to the right trainer. I've always been one to let the dogs do the talking. I specialize in pet dog training. Behavior modification, general obedience. Offlead, recall, and E collar work. I've worked with prey chasers, human and dog aggressive dogs, reactive dogs, resource guarding dogs, anxious dogs, and rescued street dogs with all kinds of problems. I succes
This is what responsible dog ownership looks like. This is juno and herra, owned by a client of mine. Juno is approximately 12 months old. Herra is 4 months old. Both are fully muzzle trained. Trained to walk nicely on a lead. Socialisd the right way. Both these dogs attend my class's. In fact herra has been coming to my classes since she was 8 weeks old. If only all XL Bully owners were as responsible as these guys we wouldn't be where we are now. Give these guys a shout out in the comment section. They deserve it. Second session with this cool dude. This is Pluto. He is approx 12 months old. Intact. He has spent the last 10 months of his life in kennal's handed in as a stray early in his life. Today we are working on exposure. Being out in a environment like this is completly new to him. He is a cracking dog that just needs some guidance here and there. He has never been in a home environment so he needs some work on toilet training, crate training thresholds, place training and co existence inside the home. I will be offering a training package to the new owner of this dog. This is a cracking dog with lots of potential. As previously mentioned he is looking for his forever home. If you are interested in this dog please get in touch. You will need to pass home a check. But he is waiting for you. Some highlights from today's class. All the dogs in this video are or were previously reactive dogs. #reactivedog #dogreactivity #dogtraining #londondogtrainer
ok last clip for today. reactive dogs. saying and doing are two differant things. its fine to talk about methology and how successful you are at working with reactive dogs. but its all just talk at the end of the day. i work with aggressive dogs, reactive dogs. dogs that have very real issues. i dont sugar coat anything and my clients respect and appriciate that. a lot of them have waisted a lot of time and money on trainers that were happy to take their money and not actualy help them with their dog. for them working with me has been a breath of fresh air. and they are seeing huge changes in their dogs. if you are going to the same classes each week and you dog is still reacting each week. then you have to ask your self two questions. 1. am i as the owner stepping up enough and putting in the work. 2. does my trainer actualy know how to help my dog ? if the answer to number one is yes. then the answer to number two is most certainly a NO. if you own a aggressive dog. or a reactive dog. there is help out there. there are trainers that can help. #JustTheFacts #londondogtrainer #dogtraining #dogtrainingclasses #reactivedog #dogreactive
my dog louie. offlead. showing his impulse control and engagement in the local park. can your trainers dog do this ?. can your trainers dog be offlead around other dogs ? can your trainers dog be offlead around livestock ? if their dogs cant do this. then how do you expect them to be able todo it with your dogs. #londondogtrainer #stoogdog #balanceddog #rottweiler #offlead #horses
