🎉 Co-founders Matteo Rossanese and Mattia Basili and colleagues have recently published a paper on the complications and outcomes of epicardial pacemaker implantation in cats! 🐱💖
Their research highlights the significant improvements in clinical signs and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) for cats undergoing this procedure. Despite the occurrence of postoperative complications, the overall outcomes remain excellent with high owner satisfaction reported.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to this research and supported us along the way.

4 UK-based referral hospitals

Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
are common in dogs and can cause significant discomfort. They occur when bacteria enter the urinary tract, leading to inflammation and infection.

S*x Predisposition:
Females: More prone to UTIs due to their shorter and wider urethra, which allows bacteria to ascend more easily.

Males: Less commonly affected, but when they are, it can be more complicated due to the longer urethra.

Predisposing Factors:
Ectopic Ureters: A conge***al condition where the ureters do not connect to the bladder in the usual location, leading to urine leakage and increased risk of infections.
Other Factors: Include bladder stones, diabetes, and weakened immune systems.

Signs of UTIs:
- Frequent urination
- Straining to urinate
- Blood in urine
- Licking of the ge***al area
- Accidents in the house

Diagnosis and Treatment:
Urinalysis: To detect bacteria, blood, and crystals in the urine.
Urine Culture: To identify the specific bacteria causing the infection.
Imaging: Such as ultrasound or X-rays to check for underlying issues like stones or anatomical abnormalities.

Did you know that cats can be affected by a type of coronavirus too? Feline coronavirus (FCoV) is common, especially in multi-cat households. While most strains cause mild symptoms, some can mutate into Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP), a more serious condition.

There is also a New Therapy for FIP:
Exciting advancements in FIP treatment include antiviral drugs like GS-441524 and remdesivir, which have shown promising results in managing this once-fatal disease.

Yes, dogs can see colours, but not in the same way humans do. 🎨
Dogs have dichromatic vision, meaning they primarily see shades of blue, yellow, and grey. Unlike humans, who have three types of colour-detecting cones (blue, red, and green), dogs have only two types of cones. Beat the Heat: 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗗𝗼𝗴 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗸𝗲 🥵

As temperatures soar, it’s crucial to keep our furry friends safe from heat stroke. Dogs, especially brachycephalic breeds like Pugs, Bulldogs, and Shih Tzus, are at a higher risk due to their short snouts and compromised breathing.

𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗸𝗲: 🔥
Excessive panting and drooling
Rapid heart rate
Lethargy or confusion
Vomiting or diarrhea
Collapse or seizures

𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗶𝗽𝘀: 🧊
Stay Hydrated: Ensure your dog has access to fresh, cool water at all times.
Avoid Peak Heat: Walk your dog early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler.

The **𝘼𝙡𝙠𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙚 𝙋𝙝𝙤𝙨𝙥𝙝𝙖𝙩𝙖𝙨𝙚 (𝘼𝙇𝙋)** enzyme is a crucial biomarker in both cats and dogs, primarily produced by the liver, bones, and intestines.
This enzyme plays a vital role in various metabolic processes, including the breakdown of proteins and the transport of molecules across cell membranes.

**𝗜𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝘀:**
- ALP levels are primarily influenced by liver conditions, such as hepatic lipidosis and cholestasis³.
- Cats have a shorter half-life for ALP, making even minor increases significant⁴.
- Elevated ALP can indicate liver disease, bile duct obstruction, or bone disorders⁵.

**𝗜𝗻 𝗗𝗼𝗴𝘀:**
- ALP levels can be influenced by liver disease, bone growth, and certain medications like glucocorticoids⁴.
- Dogs have additional isoenzymes, such as C-ALP, induced by glucocorticoids, which can contribute to higher serum ALP levels⁴.
- Increased ALP activity is often seen in conditions like hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing's disease) and bone disorders¹.

Monitoring ALP levels in both cats and dogs helps veterinarians diagnose and manage various health conditions effectively, ensuring your furry friends stay healthy and happy.
