With snow and extremely cold temperatures coming our way (outer London counties / south east) I want to know do you take your birds outside when it’s super cold? What’s the lowest temperature you’d allow your birds to be outdoors? OR, do you birds live outside all year round?

Day 6 of the exciting advent and today we’re talking pins! Feathers pierce through the skin of a bird covered in a sheath of keratin, the stuff that makes up our nails. Bird people call these “pins”, or pin feathers. The sheath crumbles away when the feather within is mature and has completed its growth,which happens at the very tip of the feather first. The sheath crumbles away slowly down the length of the feather to the base and finally you have a fully formed mature feather in all of its glory. People can help crumble the sheath away on their bird’s head, where they can’t reach, unless they have a mate to do it for them. Trying to crumble parts of the pin feather that are still developing is extremely painful for the bird, and can damage the feather within leaving visible trauma later on, known as stress bars (black lines found on feathers). Here, Shelby flew into a window, causing a patch of feathers to fall out on her head (she was fine!) and so we could see this clump of pins forming. Some people find it creepy to look at pin feathers, especially in a clump like this! I love them ❤️

Who will win a race between dog and macaw?! We played with putting our Insta360 One X2 camera on Shadow to get his POV of running alongside the birds as they fly. Shelby and Shadow have loved flying / running side by side for 2 years now, and so we wanted to get his view of his favourite pastime. Shall we try slow mo next time??

We enjoy hanging out with local flying friends. The socialisation is great for the birds and they get to flock together as they would in the wild. Here you can see Tommi with Poppleguy and Mia in the background

Teaching Shelby to keep an eye on the object under the cup. This is the first time we’ve tried this trick training, so I used different colour cups and kept the object under the same cup each time. Eventually over time I’ll make it harder, with cups of the same colour!

It’s finally caught up with our family. Two COVID patients in our house (Kason and Elissa - two of the children!) are positive. Thankfully no symptoms at all for them and so far me and Dan are negative and completely fine! But that does mean the birdies need lots of indoor training and flies around the garden instead of outdoor adventures. Hope you’re all well and safe
