***Palmers Green (N13) opening hours 18 & 19 April 2024***

At Catcuddles Vets London, we are committed to providing a safe and respectful environment. We want to remind everyone that we maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of aggressive, intrusive, or violent behaviour. This includes both verbal and physical threats directed towards our team members or volunteers. Our policies and terms and conditions are clearly outlined and enforced at both of our practices.

It is with a heavy heart that we must address a recent incident of unacceptable aggression and threatening behaviour that occurred at our Palmers Green location. Regrettably, due to this incident, we were left with no choice but to involve the Police and temporarily close our Palmers Green practice (N13) until Monday, April 22nd. While this decision affects our ability to assist cats in need, the safety and wellbeing of our staff remain our top priority. We appreciate your understanding during this time.

Our team will continue to be available via phone during our regular working hours tomorrow and Friday, and appointment requests can still be submitted through our website.

We want to reassure our clients that there are no changes at our Hither Green location, and we will be open as usual tomorrow to serve you and your furry companions.

Thank you for your ongoing support and understanding.

⭐️ Frida’s life saving surgery ⭐️

Meet one of our beloved patients, Frida. You may notice that Frida has different coloured eyes. This relatively rare condition is called heterochromia. Whilst her unique appearance is indeed striking, there is much more to Frida’s tale.

We first met Frida at Catcuddles Vets London in February. Frida had recently returned home visibly distressed and seemed to be dragging her back legs. She needed further diagnostics so her owners reached out to us, seeking affordable care at not for profit prices.

Upon examination, it became evidence that Frida was in discomfort and needed some intervention to find out what was causing this.

We sedated Frida so we could examine her legs, hips and abdomen more closely without causing further pain and we set about taking x-rays. We soon discovered that she had some dislocations and displaced pelvic bones and whilst these were mild they meant Frida would need to be crate rested for at least 6 weeks to allow the bones to heal.

Frida’s more pressing issue was that she had obviously undergone some form of trauma as she had suffered a ruptured abdominal wall and her bladder had become entangled in this, effectively strangulating the bladder. This was Frida's immediate problem and this had to be addressed as an emergency as there was a fear that she was unable to pass urine as a result of this.

Our Vet converted Frida's sedation to a general anaesthetic to allow us to take her to surgery to correct the rupture and replace her bladder. She then began the immense task of trying to piece poor Frida back together and finally place her bladder back to where it should be, as you can imagine this took great skill and patience and of course quite some time to do.

Frida recovered from her anaesthetic well and remained with us overnight, where she incredibly started to tentatively walk around her kennel, she ate and seemed happy. She had not passed any urine until nearly 24hrs after surgery but we are very pleased to say that she went on to pass normal amounts of urine without any problems!

In the intervening months since we first met Frida she has been coming back to us for regular check-ups since her surgery and this week had her final X-rays taken recently and we are pleased that all is healing well. We just hope that Frida stays out of harm’s way* and continues to enjoy a happy, pain free life!

*those of you who follow us will already know that not only is our lovely Head Nurse Sarah notorious in her attempts to steal our patients, she also has a soft spot for torties and calicos. We’re pleased to report after celebratory cuddles Frida was safely returned to her lovely family!

A set of x-rays costs £350.

The wellbeing of cats is our top priority. If your cat needs an appointment be it routine or urgent do not hesitate to reach out. With convenient same-week appointments available, we are here for your feline family in North and South London.

🦷 Tripod’s dental at Catcuddles Vets London 🦷

Tripod recently came to see us at the Tony Welsh Cat Clinic in Hither Green as he was experiencing pain when eating. His owners entrusted him into our care for dental surgery.

Tripod was admitted for a general anaesthetic to take some radiographs of his teeth so we could then see what work needed doing.

An anaesthetic was administered by injection and Tripod was connected to a machine which would help him stay asleep and allow us to carry out our work. On closer examination we could see Tripod’s gums were showing signs of gingivitis. This is where the gums become red and inflamed along the tooth line. The cause of this is usually the result of a plaque build up and local infection, but it can also be caused by some viral infections.

We then proceeded to take some radiographs of Tripod’s teeth and roots. A tiny x-ray plate is placed into the mouth much like you would have at your dentist, and a portable X-ray machine then takes the photos of the teeth.

Dental x-rays are often an essential part of our investigations and are helpful in the diagnosis and treatment of dental disease. Cats are not able to express dental pain in the same manner as we do, they simply cannot tell you what and where is painful so x-rays assist us with this. Likewise x-rays can show us what is happening below the gumline, it will show us if there is any bone loss or infection that would be otherwise invisible to the naked eye.

If a tooth is extracted the Vet may also wish to take an x-ray afterwards to ensure all roots are removed; some cats’ teeth have as many as three roots to one tooth!

When teeth are extracted, much like human dentistry, we inject local anaesthetic into the gums. This serves two purposes - firstly it is more comfortable when the patient wakes up and secondly it allows us to give a lighter anaesthetic and thus reduces the risks associated with anaesthetics.

Tripod had three teeth removed and some root remnants removed from a previously lost or extracted tooth which can be seen circled in photo A; you can see the tiny tip of the tooth and the troublesome root under that.

Aside from gingivitis, cats suffer with root resorption which is where a tooth and root gradually reabsorbed into the jaw bone until nothing is left. This can be a very painful experience for the cat and can only really be diagnosed with an x-ray.

From photo B you can see some root resorption highlighted in red and the yellow highlights gum recession. All of these teeth were removed as result of this.

We then de-scaled and polished his remaining teeth to ensure prolonged gum and tooth health.

Tripod went home a happy kitty and we’ve no doubt this food loving feline was tucking into something yummy before long. Thank you for visiting us Tripod!

As Tripod bids adieu to pain, we extend an invitation to fellow kitties. Join us in safeguarding your feline companion’s oral health journey. A dental with extractions and dental x-rays lasting up to 75 minutes costs £650. To book at dental at one of our practices within a few days just visit https://www.catcuddles.org.uk/.

16/01/2024

I would like you all to meet our newest cat that has been surrendered to Catcuddles: her name is January and she is around 2 years old.
January came to us today after a kind member of the public found her laying on the pavement in North London, unable to move, near-lifeless, freezing cold and seemingly abandoned.
Upon scanning her for a Microchip we discovered she was unchipped and showing all the signs of being homeless.
She was evidently in the late stages of pregnancy and in dire need of human compassion, she was cold, emaciated and to be frank, close to death.

Our Vet team set to work, we started to warm her up, started her on intravenous fluids as she was so dehydrated and run some simple blood tests to ensure we had a complete picture of what we're were dealing with. We also performed an ultrasound scan as she was heavily pregnant and we had grave concerns that she may well have aborted the kittens due to her awful condition.
We were relieved to find that her kittens were still alive, albeit they were likely to be undernourished due to their mum’s poorly state.

We settled little January into a kennel so she could continue to warm up whilst receiving all the necessary treatment, all the while keeping everything crossed for her.
We considered operating on her to spay her and deliver the kittens at the same time, however due to her extremely poor condition we were doubtful whether she or the kittens would survive this. The initial decision was made to support her through pregnancy and birth as far as possible. However because she is so malnourished we need to be prepared to step in if needs be. It may be that indeed if we are not able to get her in a better condition by the time she has her babies, they may need hand rearing if she is not strong enough to do it herself.

At Catcuddles we ask that all cats are neutered and microchipped, this prevents amongst other things straying and unwanted pregnancies.
We do not know how young January came to be a stray, did she get pregnant and her 'owner' did not want her anymore? Maybe they could not afford her? Maybe she went out looking for a mate and became lost? Or maybe there is some other reason, we will likely never know.
But what we do know for a fact is that she was not neutered at a young age, and she was not microchipped. She was lost or abandoned, pregnant and alone, with no shelter, love or compassion, no bed to snuggle into or indeed place to have her babies in peace.
Instead she was until today, on the freezing cold streets, dodging traffic, stealing food where she could, trying to find somewhere out of the bitter wind to sleep, and dying a slow death.
As I write this post it is -2c outside; this weather would have almost certainly lead to her death TONIGHT.
I'm sorry to post such a sad story but we need to ensure that people fully understand the consequences of THEIR actions.
People who allow this to happen to their pets are effectively allowing such horrific stories to take place. Even people who set out with good intentions can fall foul to this devastation, that is why we believe education is key.

We will continue to fight for January and indeed all the other strays and cats in need of human compassion. We will continue to try and educate people, explain to people that they have a choice.
If you are reading this message and you agree with what I have written, then please I ask you, pass that message along.

We will keep you updated as to January and her babies progress, it's going to be a long journey for her, but with the loving care of our Vets and Sanctuary team, we know she will get the very best possible.

Catcuddles will always fight for the lives of cats and their caregivers but we can only do that with your support. If you would like more information about what CatCuddles Cat Clinics and The Catcuddles Sanctuary do and how you can help, please head over to our pages and website.

Thank you ❤️ 🐾
