Thought of the day. Is there a "14 day cooling off period" when you buy a horse?
The short answer is NO! Buying a horse is very much like buying a second hand car. It's "buyer beware". There is some protection if you're buying from a person who buys and sells horses for a business but no guarantee this protection will apply.

Do you know who you are buying your next horse from and what your rights are?

Are you looking to buy a horse or pony?
Do you know your pre purchase rights and rights if things go wrong?
What sort of vetting should you go for? Do you need X-rays? How do I check a horses history?

The market is flooded with horror stories of people who have purchased a horse, only to get the horse home and find it is not what they thought or worse still end up with the horse causing serious personal injury.

Having qualified as a solicitor in 2007 I took a career break to have a family. With two horse mad girls I have first hand experience of buying ponies and horses in this extraordinary market. I myself made a mistake and bought a pony that turned out to be “not fit for purpose”.

Since then I have been bombarded with friends asking for advice after they have had a bad purchase experience, from buying a lame horse to buying a horse that subsequently hospitalised them.

Buying a horse is a huge commitment, both financially and emotionally so we need to be “savvy” as buyers.

I’m not going to search the adverts for you or charge you commission on the purchase price. I offer a pre purchase consultation where we will discuss things like your requirements, how to identify the right type of advert and horse (to reduce wasted viewings), what information to ask for before you view, the different types of seller (agent, dealer, private) and your contractual rights in each situation. After all we enter into a legal agreement when we buy a horse, in the same way we enter into a legal agreement to buy a second car so we need to understand our rights. My aim is to help you navigate the emotional journey by providing solid “voice of reason” advice. What questions to ask before I buy? What history information am I entitled to ask the seller for? What are my rights if the horse isn’t right for me after it arrives?

I can’t promise you’ll find the right horse but I can promise you’ll be a better informed buyer and in a better position to avoid some of the pitfalls that can happen when buying a horse. I would rather it take you a long time to find the right horse than a short time to find the wrong one.

If we change the way we buy horses, sellers will have to change the way they sell horses which will make the horse world a better place for all of us, the horses included.
