Half term so far, from art competitions to saddler visits

We had another visit from Vicky & Ellie who do an amazing job making sure all our horses are comfy & educating our young riders & the team about things to look out for when assessing saddle fit.

Did you know, a horse’s body shape changes through the seasons & with muscle changes too? So at Ebony we have the lovely team at Delasalle Saddlery check the horses saddles at least 3 times a year!

The young people also put together their entry for this year’s Pony Club Thelwell Art Competition. The theme is “Pony Club Through the Seasons”. Swipe & let us know what you think

Back in June a group of young people volunteered at the Beaufort Festival of Polo. Representing Ebony as Beaufort’s chosen charity… This month we got to take that same group to experience a game of polo for themselves!

Thank you Beaufort Polo Club for putting on the most fabulous day for our young people! Starting with training & practice on the ground, before picking teams & getting to ride & play a few chukkas for themselves (check out our Insta page to see how well they all did)!

Everyone had the best time (& definitely didn’t want to leave, or the games to end)! We think this experience has sparked some horsey dreams - thank you so much Beaufort Polo Club for making it all possible & special thanks to Mhairi & Hayley for making it such an engaging, fun & memorable trip.

Which is your favourite? Ebony Horse Club’s journey is now depicted, through graffiti, onsite at our Club in Brixton… Something very special happened to kick off half-term here; we welcomed the founder of Ebony Horse Club, Ros, & a panel of Ebony’s founding & original members to a bespoke Q&A (check out our Instagram page to hear ).

It was a fascinating & powerful evening where our current members asked questions & learned about Ebony’s history & celebrated the journey to where it is today.

Based on all they learned, the young people worked with graffiti artist, James from Aero Arts to design a visual timeline of Ebony’s journey. The detail & meaning behind each element tells the story of where Ebony Horse Club started (at the Accra Centre, depicted by sepia style photos - image 1), to where it is today (moving into colour - image 2), & then on to all our members hopes for the future (image 3).

At the Q&A one of the things that shocked the room was that Ebony had started with just 5 young people, who’d had to travel for hours to visit different riding schools to ride just once every 9 weeks, waking up before sunrise & carrying all their riding gear with them. Ebony now gets to work with over 180 young people every week, who ride onsite at least once a week!

Thank you to all who made the Q&A such a powerful & unforgettable event; Ros (Founder of Ebony Horse Club), Akua, Mussei, Jackie, Shanice, Cherrie, Natasha & Vanessa.

& thank you to James, & big congratulations to our talented young people for creating such a impactful, intricate & purposeful illustration of Ebony’s journey.

This week Jane & Etta, accompanied by our Patron Charlotte Steel, hosted Ebony’s first ever ‘Brixton Experience’, raising money & awareness for the Club!

The generous auction bidders, Susie Newman & family won the experience where they enjoyed a visit to Ebony, an urban hack in the autumn sunshine (on our smartly turned out horses), a Caribbean lunch A quick pit stop at Carraro Coffee & then on to a fascinating tour

A great time was had by all! One of our guests, nervous initially & riding for the first time ever, said, after a short walk through Loughborough Park, that they ‘want to go faster!’. That’s what we like to hear here at Ebony!

Based on the brilliant feedback we will be offering this experience again in the future...

Here’s our winners, David & Susie had to say afterwards;

“We were lucky enough to experience the vibrant, helpful and fun atmosphere at Ebony first hand.

Our Charity day began with the warmest welcome from the team, and the laughter continued throughout the event packed day!

We were introduced to our lovely calm horses for a safe ride around the local area.

We then enjoyed a tasty, original authentic Caribbean meal cooked by Etta in her Brixton restaurant

And we ended the fabulous day with a personal guided tour of the Brixton Brewery

Thank you to everyone: Etta and Jane for organising and perfectly executing the day. China and Rachel for help on the horses. Charlotte Steel for her fabulous stories and company.

And just fabulous to see how engaged and happy the children were in the Ebony family”

We took 5 of our brilliant young people to the London Riding Horse Show in Hyde Park run by Civil Service Riding Club

All our riders competed in classes ranging from Dressage to Handy Pony & had the chance to ride in the outdoor arena. Our young people came home with some colourful rosettes, including 1st (Theo), 2nd (Demba), 4th (Liezl), 5th (Iona) & 6th (Liezl) place, competing against all ages from across London & the South East!

It was such a wonderful day & we’re so proud of all the horses & young people who were so well turned out 😍🐴
