Can we take a minute and realize that the dogs are not these fragile creatures who suddenly freeze at the sudden change of temperature.

I am so tired of social media scaring people of dogs freezing, frost bites and death by cold.

Yes, some dogs have short coats and may need a little jacket, but if the dog is running around- they can also overheat with that coat.

Older dogs are slow, the joints hurts- protect them.

But the dog that has natural coat that keeps them warm. Don’t shave your dogs for winter- brush it, manage it and trim it- don’t shave it and then buy a coat to keep the dog warm.

My boys in December last year in the show, freezing temperatures and enjoyed swimming too because that is what the breed does.

Do you turn heating off in your house because it is too hot for the dog? Yes they enjoy the heated blankets but they can get up and walk away any time. Having a dog with thick fur with heating on is not healthy for them either, but no one talks about it.

Look at your dog and think:
Does my dog have a long/longish coat?
Does my dog stand still on the walk for their paws to freeze or they run around enjoying themselves? When you run, you sweat-dogs too
Is my dog old and need extra warmth because they don’t move so fast?
Does my dog shiver because it’s cold- or maybe exited as they chasing a ball or squirrels?

In 15 years looking after the dogs over 12000 of them- I never had to put a coat on them for a walk as they have too much fun running around and their bodies steam from heat they produce. If you keep that all under the coat, they will overheat.

Use your common sense before running to Facebook for advice - because that advice may not be suitable for your dog!

You’re on a walk and you see a dog on a lead. Your dog is running free.

Q: What should you do next?
(Cue *who wants to be a millionaire* music).

Is it:
A: put your dog on a lead
B. Let your dog run over and say hello.
C: Shout “Don’t worry, he’s friendly.”
Or
D: What dog? You were playing candy crush.

The answer is…. A.

Scenario 2:

You see dogs off lead, but you don’t know them. They playing with the owner, with each other or playing ball. Your dog off lead too.

Q: what do you do next?

Is it:
A: call your dog backand ask the other owner if your dog allowed to come say hi.
B. Let your dog run over and say hello.
C: Shout “Don’t worry, he’s friendly.”
Or
D: What dog? You were playing candy crush.

The answer is…. A.

Did you get it right?

Many dog owners don’t. They don’t understand what a negatively life-altering situation a rogue dog can be for on-lead walkers.

Here’s why:

Dogs you don’t know could be on lead for 100s of reasons.

They could be blind.
They could be recovering from surgery.
They could be deaf.
They could be aggressive.
They might be scared of being approached by strangers.
They might be training.
They could be a service dog.
They may be a rescue.
They might be terrified of dogs they don’t know.
They could be elderly or physically vulnerable.
They might simply prefer to walk on lead.

In the end, it doesn’t matter why they are on a lead. It’s none of your business. But what is your business is CONSENT.

Leads are a little flag that say “don’t come close”.

When you see them, putting your dog on a lead is respectful. You show the other owner that you CARE about their choice and consent. It doesn’t matter if your dog has 100% perfect recall. You respect the other person and their dog enough to be courteous and kind to uphold everyone’s safety by making absolutely sure everyone is on a lead (no matter how much you trust your dog).

As a person who is often walking a dog on lead for all of many the reasons listed, I can’t tell you how my heart sings when I see someone extend this gesture to me and my pack.

Your dog has no right or business running up to ANYONE (dog or human) without clear PRIOR consent to do so.

You have a responsibility to ensure your dog is in control in a public place. Failing to recall is an offense. It counts as a dog out of control in a public place.

Even if the dogs are off lead, it doesn’t mean that their dogs want to play with your dogs. They want to enjoy free time without being bothered buy random dogs.

Your dog running over to another dog could feel like your dog is coming to attack them as they have been before.

Not all humans like each other- not all dogs will play with each other either

Do you have a friendly dog that would like to make new friends? Our Sunday socialization sessions have been created to give good dogs an amazing day playing together. Unfortunately these sessions are not suitable for nervous, aggressive or very hormonal dogs. We are located in Erith, large all fenced in primary school field where all dogs can run around happy. Of course there are strict rules to make sure every dog is safe in the group. If you would like to join us, comment below to arrange your first visit. Sessions are held on Sundays 9.30am £5 per dog.
