Thanks for reading! 🐾 We hope we’ve shed some light on the current state of the pet food industry in the UK, and why the perspective of how we should feed our pets needs to change.

Even if we set aside the low-quality dog foods that contain meat meal powders, tonnes of carbohydrates and loads of additives and preservatives, and just look at the higher-quality dog foods that claim to be free from additives and preservatives - they still contain nutritional additives! THE SHOCKING TRUTH

Davies et al. (2017) and Pereira et al. (2018) analysed the mineral composition of many popular wet and dry dog food brands, including veterinary diets, sold across Europe and the UK. They
found most of these foods had mineral imbalances and did not comply with European Pet Food Industry Federation (FEDIAF) nutritional guidelines, with essential minerals either below the
minimum or above the maximum recommended levels. Pereira et al. (2018) attributed the excess minerals to the overuse of mineral additives, with additives responsible for up to 55% of the total mineral content in the dog foods tested. Davies et al. (2017) concluded that if these foods are fed exclusively for prolonged periods of time, this could compromise the health of our pets.
