Meet King 👑 who came in for a castration today. He was a star! 🌟

‼️The deadline for neutering your bully is the 30th June 2024. As the date fastly approaches we’ve had the pleasure of having them for the day.

Practices all across the UK have been adapting their bully neutering protocols to make them safer our bullies due to the high rise in complications. Croydon has introduced dispensing tranexamic acid pre and post surgery. Tranexamic acid helps to stabilize a clot and can reduce bleeding. If you have a surgery booked with us, we now offer a free appointment prior to discuss our protocols and to collect the tranexamic acid.

We also try to ensure our bullies are given regular lungworm treatment. If you have a surgery booked with us, we now offer a free appointment prior to discuss our protocols and to collect the tranexamic acid.

Lungworm infections are serious because lungworm travels around the whole body and causes problems such as breathing difficulties, bleeding problems, seizures and in, extreme cases, death. If you have a surgery booked for your dog, please ensure they are on adequate lungworm treatment.💚

🌟Update from government website on the neutering of XL bullies.🌟

The deadline for neutering the youngest XL Bully dogs is to be extended following engagement with the veterinary industry.

The new deadline to neuter XL Bully dogs that were less than 7 months old on the 31 January 2024 will be 30 June 2025. We will make this change through legislation as soon as parliamentary time allows.

This is to make sure we safely manage the existing XL Bully dog population, balancing the welfare of these animals with keeping people safe.

Neutering for older dogs remains the same. For dogs that were 12 months or older on the 31 January 2024, this has to be done by the 30 June 2024, while dogs aged at least 7 months old, but less than 12 months old on the 31 January 2024 must be neutered by 31 December 2024.

With leas than a month before the first deadline of 30 June 2024, owners of older dogs are reminded to book an appointment with the vet in good time.

If evidence is not provided that the dog has been neutered by the relevant deadline, owners will be breaching the legal requirements to keep an XL Bully dog and it may be seized by the police.

It remains an offence to breed or rehome an XL Bully dog regardless of its age.

Meet Dior! 💚

Dior came in for BOAS surgery with our amazing Vet Melania today. BOAS (Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome) is a breed-related disorder that means affected animals cannot breathe normally and this significantly compromises their welfare. BOAS is a lifelong, and often progressive disorder that affects an animal’s ability to breathe, exercise, eat, play, sleep, engage in normal behaviours and live comfortably.

Common characteristics of BOAS are:

- Narrowed nostrils
- Elongated and thickened soft palate
- Enlarged tongue
- Small windpipe

Surgery involves removing the excess tissue that is present causing the obstruction in the airway and typically includes the following:

- widening of the nostrils
- shortening and thinning the soft palate
- removing the saccules or “balloon” structures that are in the back of the throat

If you are concerned your animal might be affected by BOAS, you can book a consultation with our veterinary team today!

Please give our reception team a call on…

This week Tommy came in to us for his castration!.

Look how gorgeous he is!. He was very playful! and received lots of love and attention from all of our team before and after his procedure! ❤️.

•Neutering is when a vet prevents a male or female cat from reproducing through surgery 🐾

• In male cats it’s called castration. A vet removes both testicles which take away the main source of the male hormone, testosterone.

• In female cats it’s called spaying. A vet removes both the ovaries and usually the uterus. This means the female is unable to become pregnant.

Don't forget to check out our vip plan 👑

♥️Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month ♥️

What is veterinary nursing?

🩺Veterinary nursing is the supportive care of animals receiving treatment within a veterinary practice. A veterinary nurse works as a member of the veterinary team, providing expert nursing care for sick animals.

🩺Veterinary nurses also play a significant role in educating owners on maintaining the health of their pets. They carry out technical work and are skilled in undertaking a range of diagnostic tests, medical treatments and minor surgical procedures, under veterinary direction.

Here is SVN Naomi helping Hand Rear our little kitten friend Mushroom 🍄

Mushroom was found abandoned around 5 weeks ago now outside with no mum in sight. He was around an estimated 2 days old when found!

our amazing nursing team over the last 5 weeks have been helping hand rear him to become a big and strong little kitten he is today 🥰 Well Done Team 💚💚💚

Let’s talk about Lungworm 🪱

Lungworm is a parasitic worm that can travel to your dog’s heart and lungs 🫁 🫀

Dogs catch lungworm by ingesting larvae found in infected snails, slugs or frogs 🐸

Symptoms can include:

✖️Coughing
✖️Breathing problems
✖️Lethargy
✖️Inappetance
✖️Slower clotting from a wound

In mild cases an infection is not always noticeable, but in more severe cases it can cause bleeding pretty much anywhere in the body which if left untreated can be fatal🩸

Lungworm can be easily prevented with regular anti-parasitic treatment such as Advocate or Nexgard Spectra. This is particularly important in the South East where there is a high prevalence 💊

💕💕💕Scruffie 💕💕💕

Scruffie was such an amazing patient this week, she under went her patella luxation correction surgery with our Vet Melania.

The patella or ‘knee cap’ is a small bone (sesamoid bone) situated within the tendon of insertion of the quadriceps group. It is an integral part of the stifle (knee) joint and functions to modify the direction of pull of the quadriceps muscle and acts in a similar way to a pulley to increase the efficiency of stifle extension.

Patellar luxation occurs when this bone moves out of the groove situated at the bottom of the femur (the “sulcus”). The displacement of the patella may be to either the inside of the knee joint where it is termed a medial luxation or to the outside of the knee joint where it is termed a lateral luxation. Dogs are affected much more commonly than cats.

Did you know Vet Melania recently received her Pg Certificate in small animal surgery! 🎖️
