Mission Rabies 2024 Cambodia - Deanna's Story
Back in October, we had to say goodbye to our wonderful Deanna as she was embarking on a very special trip to Cambodia to eradicate rabies! ๐๐๐ถ
In this video, Deanna reflects back on being part of Worldwide Veterinary Service - WVS Mission Rabies initiative as well as how much travelling to another country has opened her eyes.
We couldn't be prouder of what Deanna and other dedicated healthcare professionals have achieved in Phnom Penh. Indeed, in just a week, they managed to vaccinate over 200,000 dogs! Well done to you all for saving so many lives! ๐
Meet Bear! ๐ป
Bear came to us because ha been constantly sneezing! ๐คง so he stayed with us for the day so we could try to get to the bottom of whatโs going on!
A Bronchoalveolar Lavage (BAL) is a procedure that involves collecting fluid samples from a dog's air sacs and bronchus to help diagnose respiratory diseases.
Essentially sterile fluid is carefully introduced into the lungs to collect mucous. It is then drawn out of the lungs quite quickly to be placed in tubes for external analysis.
We do x-rays (radiographs) to see if there is anything that we can find to help the diagnosis before the BAL. It is very important to do these before as something obvious may be found which changes the prognosis.
In some cases, a BAL will not be required.

Dental disease is a very common problem in dogs and cats with most over the age of 3 having teeth and gum problems.๐ฑ๐ถ
It starts with plaque (a sticky invisible infected film) that becomes mineralised (tartar). Gums become inflamed due to the irritation of the plaque.
Gingivitis (inflamed gums) is seen as red or swollen gum margins. Tartar is seen as the rough raised coating on teeth. ๐ฆท
If we remove the tartar before the gingivitis progresses to periodontal disease it is completely reversible.โค๏ธ
How do we scale and polish teeth?
Cleaning the teeth properly involves an anaesthetic. It is impossible to examine and clean the teeth properly without an anaesthetic. Modern anaesthetics are very safe in otherwise healthy pets.
Once they are asleep we use an ultrasonic scaler, just like your dentist, to remove the tartar and plaque. It is very important to scale beneath the gum line. If youโve ever had your teeth scaled you will be aware that it is quite uncomfortable. As our patients teeth are usually in a lot worse condition than yours would be โ you can appreciate that it is important for them to feel no pain.
Once all the teeth have been descaled, the teeth are polished to smooth the surface of the enamel to make it difficult for plaque to stick to the surface ๐ฆท

From Vet Nurses to Surgery Managers: celebrating progression this #VNAM2024!
This #VetNurseAwarenessMonth, let us all celebrate our truly amazing nurses for being the beating heart of our surgeries.
DNA Vetcare is proud to be supporting them as well as giving them the opportunity to progress within their careers. Their knowledge and dedication in providing the best of care to all our patients make them an invaluable asset to our surgeries.
Many of our RVNs went on to become Surgery Managers themselves! ๐
Let's hear from some of them!

What is veterinary nursing?
๐ฉบVeterinary nursing is the supportive care of animals receiving treatment within a veterinary practice. A veterinary nurse works as a member of the veterinary team, providing expert nursing care for sick animals.
๐ฉบVeterinary nurses also play a significant role in educating owners on maintaining the health of their pets. They carry out technical work and are skilled in undertaking a range of diagnostic tests, medical treatments and minor surgical procedures, under veterinary direction.
