The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) produces world-class research and provides support for the veterinary profession through its refe

rral hospitals, including the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals, Europe's largest small animal hospital, and the Beaumont Sainsbury Animal Hospital. As one of the world's leading specialist veterinary and biological science research institutions, the RVC brings together talented individuals; all of whom share a passion for human and animal health and welfare. We are the only veterinary school in the world to hold full accreditation from AVMA, EAVE, RCVS, AVBC and our biological science courses are accredited by the Royal Society of Biology. Our programmes are of international appeal and attract students from all over the world. Our graduates go on to become practicing veterinarians, research scientists, veterinary nurses and leaders in industry and government. The College owns and manages the London BioScience Innovation Centre; which was London's first centre for early stage life science companies. This puts the College at the heart of biotechnology and other biomedical research in London and opens doors for research collaboration.

🐕 Can you help us with our research?

We are offering free DGGR lipase measurement to inform clinicians of potential pancreatitis presence in their diabetic patients and to raise awareness of this potential contributor to canine diabetes. In return for sample submission using the study-specific form (please see the link to the website below), clinicians will receive a DGGR lipase result free of charge from Axiom Laboratories.

🐕 New research from the RVC has revealed that when given a choice, the UK prefers less extreme body shapes in flat-faced (brachycephalic) dogs. The general public sees less extreme body shapes as more attractive, healthier, more ethically bred and more desirable to own, and they make the public feel happier. These latest findings indicate another positive step forward in the movement to raise awareness and offer solutions to the welfare crisis surrounding extreme body confirmation in dogs.

🚜 It was great to welcome Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, to our stand at the Hertfordshire County Show Agricultural Society’s Schools Food and Farming Day on Tuesday 1st July.

We had opportunities for pupils from Years 4 to 9 from local schools to take part in activities demonstrating animal handling, lamb health, dairy technology, neuroscience, microbiology, and pet blood donation.

Thanks to Dr Beth Reilly and the student ambassadors for their support especially given the heat; over 500 pupils and their teachers from 22 school groups visited us throughout the day.

We were pleased to be able to take the new teaching models on tour; and St. Michael’s School won a free trip to RVC Boltons Park Farm for guessing the name of the new Alpaca model: Albert!

🐕 The Legal Advisory Group on Extreme Conformation in Dogs (LAGECDogs) has released a new analysis highlighting the legal responsibilities of dog owners and carers under the Animal Welfare Act to take all reasonable steps to prevent heat-related illnesses (HRI) in their dogs. The analysis also highlights the extra requirements placed on those who are responsible for dogs with extreme conformations (body/face shape). This analysis will support dog owners and carers, as well as the general public, to protect canine welfare during hot weather.

🐈 One of our undergrad VN students, Bibi Tuken Tegi, recently attended the 2025 World Feline Congress in Scotland. She was selected for a bursary offered by International Cat Care, who awarded two places to UK-based veterinary nursing students (with preference for those from Scotland) to attend.

Bibi said: "I was incredibly grateful to be selected. The conference was an exceptional experience. We attended lectures on a huge range of feline-related subjects. Each session was so engaging and informative, that time flew by and I enjoyed every second of it. This event really reinforced my passion for feline nursing. I’m truly thankful for the opportunity and so excited to implement what I’ve learned in both my studies and future practice. Additionally, I saw Niamh, as she was one of the speakers there as well! It was so lovely to see a familiar face!"

🐕 A new study from the RVC's VetCompass Programme has revealed the scale of serious welfare issues associated with dog breeds that have abnormal eyelid positioning that many people still consider ‘normal for the breed’. This research shows how atypical eyelid positioning is connected to serious eyelid conformation disorders in companion dog breeds in the UK, including entropion (eyelid turns inwards) and ectropion (eyelid turns outwards).
