My Reactivity Relief cohort are in for a treat! 🤩 Our next guest speaker is .

Gemma Fisher is a renowned international dog trainer, accredited by and The Animal Behaviour and Training Council . She shares her life with Border Collies, plus one somewhat unorthodox Working Cocker Spaniel. Border Collies and their crosses can be amazing dogs. But they can also be really hard work too!

That’s why she helps collie owners how to teach their dog a brilliant recall so they can enjoy walking anywhere without the worry of them overreacting to joggers, cyclists or other dogs

I'm delighted to share that we have a guest speaker for the programme, Gemma Fisher, speaking on "Training for dogs with a strong prey drive".

As we have many sighthounds and spaniel crosses in the group it's going to be so helpful to hear from Gemma.

Gemma is a passionate and enthusiastic speaker who brings lots of energy to her workshops and seminars. She is only interested in shaping dog and human behaviour using kind, positive reinforcement based methods. It is her fervent belief that all creatures are capable of great things - if only they can brought to realise it. Helping people and dogs realise that is her definition of a successful seminar.

She has a passion for helping dog lovers build better relationships with their dogs so that they can enjoy every moment with them.

Can't wait for her guest session in August! 🐕 🐑 🐈

It’s finally growing in recognition that dogs need support for their behaviour and mental wellbeing, as well as their physical health.

There isn’t a behaviour clinic in every town or street corner like vets yet and it’s still not a regulated industry.

So with all the dominance based “trainers” out there giving harmful advice, make sure you look for a properly accredited behaviourist such as

Meet sweet Otto the lurcher 🐾 💙

I worked with Otto’s guardians for his behaviour through my online programmes - Soothe Separation Anxiety and Reactivity Relief - and now we stay in touch with my Happiest Hounds club membership 🐶

Otto used to bark and lunge at other dogs but can comfortably pass or meet other new dogs he doesn’t know and got to an hour of home alone relaxation time! What a star he is💫

If you’d like to hear more about my dog reactivity programme, send me a DM with the word REACTIVE, as we start again in June!

Today was a big one as I presented at the Animal Welfare Foundation Discussion forum in London, to a room of 200 heads of animal welfare charities, vets, Oxbridge academics, vet behaviourists, industry reps and students from the UK, Denmark, Australia, USA, South Africa & others.

I did a lightning talk and Q&A on “From the racetrack to the dog park: behavioural adaptation and welfare considerations of greyhounds rehomed as pets.”

Standing up and raising the profile of ex racing greyhounds and the wellbeing of sighthounds everywhere 🌍

Thank you to those who came or talked with me afterwards, it was special to catch up with old colleagues, to meet my former lecturers and to hear from budding students.

Thank you to my lovely clients who let me tell their dog’s story and who remind me why this is what I want to do 🐾❤️

Training spaces available in May! 👀This is my unique membership with an online group of dogs and their humans, who support each other and learn from me about how best to support their dogs.

It’s for you if:

🐾 Your dog has a big prey drive and is hard to handle when they see a small animal on walks
🐾 You have a sighthound or rescue dog who struggles with coming back on a walk
🐾 No matter how much training you seem to have done, your dog still doesn’t listen
🐾 You’ve worked with a local dog trainer in person but they just don’t get sighthounds (our hounds are special and we know it!)
🐾 You wish you could take your dog to the pub or out for a coffee without getting embarrassed or worrying your dog will kick off
🐾 You love your dog but you know it’s time to make some big changes so you can both be happier
🐾 You don’t want the quick fix that won’t last, you are ready to do the work and you know slow and steady is best

If this sounds like you and your dog, see the link in my bio to join or send me a DM 📨

Here is your permission to stop feeling bad for causing your dog’s behaviour! 💔

The influences on dog behaviour are so multi factorial, from before they are even born to what they ate for breakfast this morning.

But it’s tough to change challenging behaviour alone and there is so much (bad) conflicting advice out there, as it’s an unregulated industry. 🤯

By working with me as an accredited behaviourist there will be no judgement on what you have already tried that didn’t help or what led to your dog’s behaviour. We’ll develop a plan together to help your dog and suit your lifestyle, whether through one of my popular group programmes or perhaps 1-1 long term support if needed.

Comment below BEHAVIOUR if you’d like me to get in touch about how we can work together for your dog’s behaviour, or TRAINING if it’s general training support you need!

We work better together 🤝🏽❤️ Behaviour changes in dogs who are highly anxious about the world around them take a big investment in time, professional support and training applied through a behaviour lens.

Zephyr the gorgeous lurcher was a superstar 🌟 We.met because he was refusing to go for walks with his guardian, due to a range of big feelings about the walks.

For my 1-1 support we start with a 1-1 behaviour consultation online and then have follow up sessions monthly over the next 5 months, through a hybrid of online (available worldwide) or in person sessions (available in London and Kent).

By the end of 6 months Zephyr was happily going out for 2 hour walks again and even helping with the supermarket and Christmas shopping. Who'd have thought it!! 😅 Well done to him and his hard working humans!!

If you'd like to find out more about my 1-1 support, book a call at the link in my bio.

What noone is talking about 🤯 You can't pour from an empty cup.

Taking care of your needs means that you can better support your dog, in a way that is sustainable for the long term for you both.

Challenging dog behaviour can be really, well, challenging. It takes its toll and you often don't feel this is what you hoped for by bringing a dog into your life. There's no shame in feeling that way.

What are some ways that you take care of your own needs, away from looking after your dog? Comment below ⬇️

7 signs of pain in Sighthounds 👀

⚠️ These are some common misconceptions of normal behaviour in sighthound breeds such as greyhounds, whippets, lurcher crossbreeds, salukis... As anxiety is quite prevalent especially amongst the rescue dogs, many of these behaviours get dismissed as behavioural.

In reality a huge number of behaviour issues begin due to medical discomfort and this won't necessarily be picked up in one vet visit 🐾

Speak with your dog's vet again, consider further investigations and ask about your dog's treatment options to rule out pain 💊

Once pain and medical issues are being managed, behaviour still needs support because learning may have taken place, so working with an accredited behaviourist can support your dog to overcome their behaviour issues. We all work on a vet referral so will collaborate with your vet practice and refer onto a vet behaviourist if further behaviour medicine advice is needed.

If your dog is showing signs of aggression (e.g. growling, snapping, biting), it's recommended to get support from an accredited behaviourist.

Look out for these signs to Speak Sighthound (and other breeds!) 👀🐕

Some of these can be positive or negative, such as a fearful dog running up to or jumping up at someone they are afraid of to sniff them, but not wanting to be stroked.

For the 'goodbye' signs here I'm describing when a dog has had enough of an interaction and is ready for it to finish, or they're politely saying no to being stroked or touched without showing more escalated signs of discomfort.

There are lots more too! Share below how your dog says HELLO and GOODBYE with their body language...

Top tips to help your dog's wellbeing 🐕🐾

These are some of the key brain chemicals to consider to help how our dogs feel and behave on a daily basis...

🧀 Dopamine - for their motivation and engagement with you or reward based training
❤️ Oxytocin - to improve their social bonds
🌲Serotonin - for feeling relaxed and content
💨 Endorphins - for feeling energised and calm

These are especially helpful to consider for our dogs who are anxious, stressed, fearful, or overaroused.

Did you know? 🤔 There isn't a lot we can do to get our dog's to respond to us or change their behaviour IN THE MOMENT of their fight, flight or freeze survival behaviour. It's not the right time to work on changing it.

There is so much we can do to support our dogs with their behaviour challenges before, after and outside of the moment of this survival mode behaviour to help them 🐕

Here are 6 REAL reasons dogs freeze on walks (refuse to move forward). Note that NONE of them are "because he's stubborn".

1. Pain - has your dog had a recent health check and vet MOT?
2. Fear - is your dog struggling with a trigger in their surroundings?
3. Anxiety - did you dog have a bad past experience they're still concerned about?
4. Predatory behaviour - is your dog stopping and staring at the neighbour's cat, a fox or squirrel? Or remembering where they saw them last?
5. Communicating a desire - does your dog need more choice over their walk route and length?
6. Learned behaviour - has the original reason for your dog's freezing stopped but they can't seem to get over it?

There are more reasons than this too! Has your dog been stopping on their walks? It can feel so hard to manage when this happens.

Remember instagram isn’t dog behaviour therapy. If your dog is freezing on walks, it's recommended to get a vet health check and support from an accredited behaviourist 🐕❤️

INSTAGRAM vs REALITY - The Dog Behaviour edit!

What you see around you are calm, well behaved dogs doing things that may seem impossible for your dog.

What you don't see is the background, rearing and work that went into getting a dog to behave in those ways!

There are NO quick fixes. These methods only cause more harm in the long run.

For our rescued and rehomed dogs they are going to need extra time, care and attention because of what they missed out on in their early life.

January has been full of pinch me moments! Since returning after the Christmas break I've had lots of follow up sessions with dogs I've been working with longer term (and some just a couple of sessions in) and I couldn't be more proud of how they are doing! I'm so grateful to do this my job and am amazed at the life changing impact that behaviour therapy can have on a dog and their human's lives.

These examples also show the power of online remote sessions (or a combination of both which I often use) to embed new habits and for everyone to feel happier!

If your dog is showing signs of aggression or anxiety (e.g. growling, snapping, howling, trembling), it's recommended to get support from an accredited behaviourist. 📲

First time dog guardians listen up! 🎧

I work with a lot of first time dog guardians, including those who had family pets and now have their first dog as an adult. So many of you feel insecure about whether you are doing things right for your dog.

🐾You want to do things differently
🐾You want to use kind, positive reward based training
🐾You want to do your research and use evidence-based techniques
🐾You want to change old generational patterns of training dogs using force or coercion

By having this mindset you are already the best advocate for your dog, you'll be there for them and give them what they need in life.

About Behaviour By Becca

Behaviour problems are more common than you expect. A recent study showed around a third of young dogs euthanised in the UK was for behaviour reasons. Behaviour problems are stressful for you, as an owner, as well as your dog. Whether the problem you are experiencing is on walks, at home, or when you leave them on their own.

Using positive, evidence-based methods that always put welfare first, Behaviour By Becca can help change your nervous or reactive dog into a calm, relaxed individual who can enjoy their life with you, in and around the busy city of London.
