𝐋𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐌𝐚𝐭

Designed by vets, LickiMats is a unique and multipurpose product range that can improve your pet’s mental health, oral health and digestion. They work differently for dogs and cats and can assist with anxiety reduction, slow feeding, tongue cleaning, entertainment, and more.

The LickiMat range benefits from a challenge/reward-based treat delivery system that releases small portions of treats and food, while engaging pets over a lengthy time. It helps promote calm behaviour in your pet during stressful times, without using medication.

The main benefits of using LickiMats are:

Dogs: Entertain/distract and reduce anxiety, stress and boredom.

Cats: Better oral health and slow feeding.

𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐕𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐃𝐚𝐲

World Veterinary Day 2024 is celebrated on 27th April and aims to convey an important message: “Veterinarians are essential health workers.” Yet, data shows that only 49% of veterinary professionals feel their profession is appreciated.

Veterinary science not only enhances animal health and well-being, but it also contributes to the physical and mental well-being of humans. Without veterinarians, more animals would suffer, and humans would also face a greater risk of contact with dangerous diseases.

Sadly, many veterinarians are considering leaving their careers, often citing reasons associated with work-life balance and mental health.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐁𝐞 𝐃𝐨𝐧𝐞?

We should celebrate the behind-the-scenes work that vets, nurses, and animal assistants undertake. We should understand that they do this work because of a deep compassion and dedication to animal welfare. And, by celebrating days like this, we help all those associated with the profession to feel appreciated and valued, and hopefully, this will help to keep them loving what they do.

There are lots of young people dreaming of working in the industry and they must understand both the beauty and the reality of this dream. Let’s encourage them to chase this goal by showing them how rewarding it can be to work as a veterinarian.

Please show love to the veterinary profession by hitting the heart emoji!

3-year-old Minnie, presented to us before the weekend as an end of the evening emergency!

We had finished consulting our last patient and were preparing to close the clinic.

The owner called and had noticed some mastication earlier on in the day and then again later on.

They thought she possibly went out to the garden and got stung by a wasp at lunchtime.

The history and timeline of the sting was just sitting right with our practice nurse; she took a decision that Minnie needed to be seen ASAP, so we invited the owners to come to the clinic as an emergency.

Upon examination, Minnie was bright and active but displayed a mastication of the mouth. Our vet was able to see something glimmering. We could not believe that behind the upper molar tooth—lodged near the oral palatoglossal area—was this sharp shard of bone (see photo). It took a few careful attempts, but we managed to retrieve it whole.

Minnie was a very lucky girl - this sharp pointed, splintered bone could have caused such trauma if she had gone on to swallow this. Potentially, life-saving surgery would have been required!

We are so glad she is fine and the owner was so relieved!

Please be aware of the dangers of feeding your dogs bones or them finding bones on the floor!

𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐞𝐭 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲

At last, Easter is here. A time for family fun, egg hunting and lots of chocolate! No doubt your loving pets will want to join in the excitement—and they deserve to be part of it—but let’s remember the hazards Easter can bring, so we can keep our little companions safe.

𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐄𝐠𝐠𝐬
With Easter comes chocolate, and with chocolate comes a high risk to pets—especially those dogs that’ll clean up anything sweet and within reach. Chocolate can make dogs very sick and, in some cases, can be fatal. Keep it well away.

If your dog has eaten chocolate, contact your vet immediately.

It is also bad for cats and rabbits, though they are less likely to eat it.

𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐬
These are lovely ideas to make Easter special for the kids, but they come with hazards to pets. The small treats found in them, plus any straw or plastic filler can be tempting for animals to play with and there’s always a chance of them swallowing something that isn’t meant to be eaten.

This can cause harmful digestive problems. Look out for bloating, vomiting, dehydration, and weakness.

𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐬
Although they can give a delightful Spring feeling to your home, certain flowers—or even just the water they sit in—can be extremely dangerous to animals. Some to avoid are lilies (especially for cats), daffodils (for dogs), amaryllis, and tulips.

𝐇𝐨𝐭 𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐁𝐮𝐧𝐬
This is another treat that your pet should not be given. Hot cross buns are delicious for us humans and a popular choice during Easter, but the raisins and other dried fruit can cause kidney concerns in cats and dogs.

𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐁𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐧
It’s good for us all to take that time out and enjoy Easter weekend with family and friends—we all deserve the extra downtime. Just keep an eye out for the dangers to your animals and take steps to prevent any accidents.

Happy Easter, from the Triage Vets team!

𝐃𝐨𝐠 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐟𝐭 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐲

Dog Theft Awareness Day takes place on March 14th and aims to raise awareness of the number of dogs stolen in the UK. Cases of stolen dogs have sadly been on the rise in recent years, so it’s important to keep reminding ourselves of the problem and the steps we can take to keep our dogs safe.

What can you do to help protect your dog?

• 𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 – By law, you must have your dog microchipped and keep your details up-to-date. This is an excellent way of identifying your dog if it is lost or stolen and it increases the chances of being reunited with your pet.

• 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐯𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭 – You must be aware of your surroundings when out with your dog. Avoid wearing headphones or talking on the phone, and look out for suspicious activity or behaviour.

• 𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐨𝐠 – Keeping them on a lead is the safest option, but if you do let them have a runaround in the park, make sure you’ve got an eye on them at all times. Don’t leave them tied outside a shop or alone in a car.

• 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞 – Doors and gates should be secure and check for any small gaps that your dog might sneak through. Consider CCTV and motion sensor lights for added security.

We should be able to enjoy the time we have with our dogs without the added worry of them being snatched from a park or even from the back garden. Keep your pets safe and make other dog owners aware too.

Please take note of new regulations for compulsory microchipping for cats.

"The new rules mean cats must be implanted with a microchip before they reach the age of 20 weeks and their contact details stored and kept up to date in a pet microchipping database. All owners must have their cat microchipped by 10 June 2024 and owners found not to have microchipped their cat will have 21 days to have one implanted, or may face a fine of up to £500"

New legislation laid in Parliament today introducing mandatory cat microchipping

𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐏𝐞𝐭 𝐎𝐰𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡

With Valentine's Day around the corner, February is big on love. But are we sharing our affection with all who need it? Our beloved pets should receive their share too. Responsible Pet Owners Month is celebrated every February to promote caring and responsible pet ownership.

Not only should we celebrate the magical bond with our pets, but we should also understand our roles and responsibilities as pet owners. Here are some of the key areas to focus on:

• Are we feeding them high-quality, healthy food in the correct portions?

• Does our pet get enough exercise?

• Are they getting the socialisation they require?

• If they go outdoors, can they be easily identified if lost?

• Does your loving pet visit the vet for their required check-ups, and not only in emergencies?

We should be responsible pet owners all year round, but this special occasion helps to highlight the pet-owning duties that will help bring love and happiness to our animals.

𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐚 𝐏𝐞𝐭’𝐬 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐲

Change a Pet’s Life Day is celebrated on the 24th of January and is all about raising awareness of animals in need and encouraging people to adopt a pet.

The bond we have with our animals is irreplaceable, magical and full of love. We cherish our little furballs and you can bet they feel the same about us. This special day is all about helping animals that haven’t been so lucky yet. Many are still waiting for a loving home and a family that will change their life. Let’s make a difference.

Here are a few ways you can help:

• Adopting an animal from a shelter gives them a chance to live a life of happiness and love
• Fostering a pet is also a fantastic way to rescue an animal until they find their forever home.
• Share this special day on social media and by word-of-mouth. The more people who know, the more animals that can be saved.
• If you already own a pet, why not make a change that will have a positive impact on their life? More exercise, an improved diet or just spending more time with them will make a massive difference.

Not everyone can adopt a pet, but by helping in any way we can, more animals get a better chance in life.

Some of us may have had the surprising experience of finding our dog eating something that they really shouldn’t, despite our best intentions and care.

A patient story just before the New Year!
One-year-old Luna, a German Shepard.

The owner was casually playing with Luna and she happened to 'roll over' and yawn; the owner noticed something very unusual in the hard palate. The owner tried to remove it but was not able to. Suprisingly Luna was showing zero symptoms. She was eating normally and being her normal, vibrant self. We invited Luna and the owners to the clinic, ensuring Luna was prepared for a possible procedure if required. After the initial assessment we were still not quite sure what the item was as oral inspection was limited - Luna is an especially clever girl so knew what was going on! After further discussion with the owner, it was elected to provide a sedation and further oral exploration.
Luna was hospitalised and adminstered a sedation. We were then able to orally explore and could see the extent of the foreign body that was wedged horizontally. We were unable to remove via first attempts as the foreign body was so hard and fixated, it had started to embed either side of the gingiva. We opted to use a Liston Bone Cutter to snip the end and gently lift out the item. The foul odour that was released gave us some indication that this item had likely been in place for sometime. After further inspection of the item we believe it to be some kind of stick or bamboo branch (see photo).

We are glad to report Luna has made a swift recovery, and a follow-up appointment has been booked to ensure the Gingiva has healed.

Please inspect your pets mouth on a regular basis and if possible, ask them to roll over so you can visualise the roof of their mouth!
