SUSTAINABILITY IN JUNE ๐ฑ๐
Lovely to see our team making good use of the bike rack ๐ฒ
Commuting to work on a bike is not only a great form of exercise, but is the least carbon intensive way to commute. Small journeys by bike can make a big difference. Researchers found that shifting just one trip from car to cycle each day saves the average person 3.2kg of carbon: equivalent to emissions of driving 10km, eating a serving of lamb or chocolate, or sending 800 emails.
Fancy carbon offsetting your chocolate habit?
Keep an eye out for ongoing regular sustainability posts about our new projects and ideas.

We have some sad news to report.
Our Penge branch have had handed into them two cats that have been involved in fatal road traffic accidents, both cats were found by separate people, from different areas in Penge.
The first one is a very fluffy, white with some grey, female cat, with no microchip. We believe she is quite young. She was found at the top of Stembridge on Croydon Road, near the small Tesco Express.
The second cat, an entire male Tabby with orange eyes, roughly around 1-7 years old was found on Lanner Road.

EARTH DAY ๐ฑ ๐
On earth day we wanted to highlight the amazing organisation that has been championing sustainability in the veterinary profession since 2019. They have working groups, which consists of Food & Farming, Greener Veterinary Practice, Vet Curriculum and Equine Sustainability. Though mainly volunteers, the team have created a veterinary specific carbon calculator, providing many resources and courses on sustainability topics, as well as working together to support veterinary practices to reduce the environmental impact of their operations.
Find out more about their work here; https://vetsustain.org/.

Frog the Crested Gecko came in to see our vet Chris because he wasnโt eating very well at home.
๐ฆ Crested geckos are omnivorous and enjoy a variety of fruits and bugs in their diet. Many illnesses in exotic pets are related to their conditions in which they are kept and many have very specific environmental needs.
๐จ๐ปโโ๏ธFrogโs owners were doing a great job at meeting these, and so the decision was made to conduct some imaging to see if anything else was going on. Frog had both an x-ray and an ultrasound performed - these showed he had an impaction in his gut. Fortunately, with some efforts at increasing his hydration he eventually passed this and returned to eating normally.

The case of a dog and his owners knitting needles ๐งถ
Pudsey came in to see us with a very unusual problemโฆ. He managed to fall onto his owners knitting needles ๐ณ
๐ฉ๐ปโโ๏ธ Our East Dulwich team immediately x-rayed him and went on to do an Exploratory Laparotomy (explore the area to see what has happened and treat accordingly) - luckily no abdominal damage was detected, we quickly removed the needles that had gone into the pleural space of the chest (as seen in the x-ray pictures), whilst quickly closing with sutures to prevent air getting sucked into the chest, which could cause a Pneumothorax. A chest drain was then placed to ensure no gas or blood could build up.
๐๐ป Fortunately the needles didnโt cause any damage and much to everyones surprise Pudsey ran out wagging his tail to greet his owners the same day
๐ A very unlucky, but lucky boy!

Throughout November 2023 we are asking pet owners to return any unused or leftover antibiotic medications to us for safe disposal. Please drop off any unused medications to us at the practice. You can hand them in to a vet, nurse or the reception team. This medication might be left-over from a recent prescription, antibiotics that you didnโt need or out-of-date medication. Letโs keep antibiotics working, together! ๐จ๐ผโ๐ฌ What is Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)? Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria develop defences that protect them from antibiotic medications, making treatment less effective. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an increasing problem worldwide, affecting both human and animal health. Antibiotics are essential when treating many conditions in animals and people, but bacteria are becoming resistant to many antibiotics that we rely on in human and veterinary medicine. Our practice is taking part in the antibiotic amnesty this November. Clients can return any unused or out of date antibiotics to us for safe disposal. ๐ What to do if you have leftover or unused antibiotics: Return them to your vet practice for safe disposal Inappropriate disposal of unused antibiotics could contribute to antimicrobial resistance and pollute the environment through waterways, affecting our wildlife Donโt ever give your pet, or any pet for which they havenโt been prescribed, left-over or out of date antibiotics. Using antibiotics when not needed could risk side effects, delay an accurate diagnosis for your pet, mean that your pets condition may not be treatable, and contributes to antimicrobial resistance. #AntibioticAmnesty #onehealth #thehoodvet #theneighbourhoodvet #se23 #se22 #se20 #southeastlondonvets #southeastlondonvet
Temperatures are set to soar this week ๐ฅ Hereโs our top tips for keeping your pets cool ๐ชญ Not forgetting the feathered variety ๐ฆ ๐ฆฎ Walk your dog early in the morning or later in the evening ๐ Avoid long car journeys and never leave your dog in a hot car ๐โ๐ฆบ Restrict exercise on hot days ๐ฆ Always take water with you and use a water spray gun to keep them cool (dogs only) ๐ฐ Make sure they have access to a cool shaded place and cool drinking water ๐ฝ๐ถ If you have a brachycephalic (shorter-faced) dog such as a French Bulldog or Pug, then please be aware that they can struggle much more in warmer weather, so be especially careful when temperatures rise above 20 degrees ๐ช ๐ For pets that are indoors, keep those curtains and windows shut during the warmest part of the day, to ensure the house is kept cool #hotdayaheadโ๏ธ #heatwave #petsofinstagram #theneighbourhoodvet #southeastlondonvet #se23 #se22 #se20 #penge #croftonpark #eastdulwich

๐ฐRabbit welfare need #4๐ฐ โจLet rabbits be rabbitsโจ Itโs essential for our rabbitโs mental and physical well-being that we allow them to carry out their natural behaviours. Most rabbits are active, sociable, curious and playful so it is lots of fun to find out more about what your rabbit enjoys doing and look for ways to encourage their natural behaviours. Cotton is a house rabbit who loves playing with rabbit safe boxes, which encourages natural gnawing behaviour and helps to mentally stimulate them. Video courtesy of Patricia, our veterinary nurse ๐ฉ๐ปโโ๏ธ For more information please check out www.rabbitwelfare.co.uk or call into the practice for further advice from our team.
๐ฐ Rabbit welfare need #2 ๐ฐ โจWhatโs on the menu? โจ Just like us, rabbits need a healthy balanced diet. This should consist of 85% hay and/or grass, 10% leafy greens and 5% pellets. They should also have access to fresh clean water at all times. There are lots of rabbit foods on the market, but pellets are recommended over muesli mixes. This is because muesli mixes allow rabbits to pick out their favourite bits, which can lead to an imbalanced diet as well as dental and digestive problems. For more information please check out www.rabbitwelfare.co.uk or call into the practice for further advice from our team.
