Our practice is taking part in the 2023 Antibiotic Amnesty

Throughout November 2023 we are asking pet owners to return any unused or leftover antibiotic medications to us for safe disposal. Please drop off any unused medications to us at the practice. You can hand them in to a vet, nurse or the reception team. This medication might be left-over from a recent prescription, antibiotics that you didn’t need or out-of-date medication. Let’s keep antibiotics working, together! 👨🏼‍🔬 What is Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)? Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria develop defences that protect them from antibiotic medications, making treatment less effective. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an increasing problem worldwide, affecting both human and animal health. Antibiotics are essential when treating many conditions in animals and people, but bacteria are becoming resistant to many antibiotics that we rely on in human and veterinary medicine. Our practice is taking part in the antibiotic amnesty this November. Clients can return any unused or out of date antibiotics to us for safe disposal. 💊 What to do if you have leftover or unused antibiotics: Return them to your vet practice for safe disposal Inappropriate disposal of unused antibiotics could contribute to antimicrobial resistance and pollute the environment through waterways, affecting our wildlife Don’t ever give your pet, or any pet for which they haven’t been prescribed, left-over or out of date antibiotics. Temperatures are set to soar this week 🔥 Here’s our top tips for keeping your pets cool 🪭 Not forgetting the feathered variety 🦜 🦮 Walk your dog early in the morning or later in the evening 🚗 Avoid long car journeys and never leave your dog in a hot car 🐕‍🦺 Restrict exercise on hot days 💦 Always take water with you and use a water spray gun to keep them cool (dogs only) 🚰 Make sure they have access to a cool shaded place and cool drinking water 🐽🐶 If you have a brachycephalic (shorter-faced) dog such as a French Bulldog or Pug, then please be aware that they can struggle much more in warmer weather, so be especially careful when temperatures rise above 20 degrees 🪟 🏠 For pets that are indoors, keep those curtains and windows shut during the warmest part of the day, to ensure the house is kept cool #hotdayahead☀️ #heatwave #petsofinstagram #theneighbourhoodvet #southeastlondonvet #se23 #se22 #se20 #penge #croftonpark #eastdulwich

🐰Rabbit welfare need #4🐰 ✨Let rabbits be rabbits✨ It’s essential for our rabbit’s mental and physical well-being that we allow them to carry out their natural behaviours. Most rabbits are active, sociable, curious and playful so it is lots of fun to find out more about what your rabbit enjoys doing and look for ways to encourage their natural behaviours. Cotton is a house rabbit who loves playing with rabbit safe boxes, which encourages natural gnawing behaviour and helps to mentally stimulate them. 🐰 Rabbit welfare need #2 🐰 ✨What’s on the menu? ✨ Just like us, rabbits need a healthy balanced diet. This should consist of 85% hay and/or grass, 10% leafy greens and 5% pellets. They should also have access to fresh clean water at all times. There are lots of rabbit foods on the market, but pellets are recommended over muesli mixes. This is because muesli mixes allow rabbits to pick out their favourite bits, which can lead to an imbalanced diet as well as dental and digestive problems.
