That's a wrap for Vet Nurse Awareness Month 2025! 🥳 We've loved shining a light on the incredible work our veterinary nurses do every single day.

Last but certainly not least, we're celebrating our amazing Head Nurse, Sarah, from Emergency Home Vet North West! Sarah is not only a phenomenal leader and a compassionate nurse, but she's also someone who truly embodies lifelong learning and a zest for life outside of work.

🧠Fun fact about Sarah: Beyond her incredible veterinary skills, Sarah is a woman of many talents and is always learning something new! Whether she's crushing it in CrossFit, tearing it up on the roller derby track, perfecting her nail art, or mastering riding motorbikes, she's constantly expanding her horizons. And if that wasn't enough, she's about to embark on a Certificate in Veterinary Leadership and Management! Talk about dedication! 🤩

Thank you, Sarah, for your unwavering commitment to our patients, your team, and to continuously developing yourself. You're an inspiration to us all! 🥰

And a huge thank you to all the vet nurses out there – you are the backbone of veterinary medicine, and we appreciate you more than words can say.🦸‍♀️🦸‍♂️

🌟 VNAM SPOTLIGHT: Chloe – Triage RVN, Calisthenics Whiz, and All-Round Legend 🌟

Chloe has been with us since day one - one of our most trusted and experienced RVNs, and a true cornerstone of our emergency team.

When the phone rings and a pet is in crisis, it’s often Chloe’s calm, confident voice you’ll hear first. She’s seriously cool as a cucumber, both in style and in her calm approach to helping stressed pet parents when they call. A triage pro, clinically sharp, and absolutely unflappable – the kind of nurse every team dreams of having!

💪 Outside of vet life, Chloe is seriously multitalented. She’s into calisthenics (she moves through handstands like she’s balancing a basket of kittens 🐱), travels the UK and Europe in her camper van, and has a voice as lovely as her guitar playing.

She brings compassion, capability, and cool-headed confidence to every emergency. Whether she’s stabilising patients or singing by the campfire, Chloe is a true force of nature, and we’re so lucky to have her! 🥰

🌟Next up in our celebration of the powerhouse triage nurses behind Emergency Home Vet… it’s Charlotte! Our Head Nurse & Director! 👑💚🌟

Charlotte is not only our Head Nurse of the London team, but she recently stepped into the role of Nurse Director too, and honestly, we don’t know what we’d do without her. She’s the calm in every storm, the glue that holds us all together, and the one who makes sure we’re running like a well-oiled (and well-caffeinated) machine.

☕ Essential fact: No team meeting starts without Charlotte’s tea. Gallons of it. Strong, hot, and always in hand - tea comes first.

📊 Bonus fact: Charlotte has a deep love for a well-structured spreadsheet. We joke about it, but secretly we all know her spreadsheets save lives (or at least save our sanity).

Whether she's checking in on every team member, solving 10 things at once, or reminding us all that we're stronger together - Charlotte is our tribe leader, our spreadsheet sorceress, and our tea-fuelled champion. 💪🐾

🌟 Meet the Second Star in Our RVN Spotlight Series! 🌟

We're continuing our celebration of the amazing triage Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVNs) who keep the wheels turning behind the scenes during emergency calls. 💥🐾

Today’s feature: Margaux - one of our triage superheroes who we (sadly for us, but proudly!) say goodbye to at the end of this month, as she steps into an incredible new chapter… becoming a fully qualified vet! 🎉🩺

📚 Fun Fact: Margaux took German lessons in high school, but only remembers how to say:
➡️ “Ich habe nicht verstanden.”
➡️ “Könnten Sie das bitte wiederholen?”
(“I didn’t understand” and “Could you repeat that please?” — arguably the most useful phrases ever 😅)

Whether it’s coordinating chaos, supporting pet parents, or making sure our vets are ready to roll, Margaux has been a calm, clever, compassionate presence. We’re going to miss her - but we know she’s going to be an absolutely fantastic vet. 💚

Stay tuned as we continue shining a light on our incredible RVNs each week!

🐾 Meet Tina - Our Triage Queen! ☕💉

This Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month, we’re introducing the amazing vet nurses behind the scenes, starting with the fabulous Tina! 👩‍⚕️✨

Tina is one of our triage superheroes, calmly assessing emergencies and getting pets the help they need, fast. But did you know...

👉 She takes her coffee milky, no sugar – solid choice ☕
👉 She's left-handed (we love a creative mind!)
👉 She does her TICKS backwards – it drives everyone mad, but we secretly think it’s iconic 🤣✅
👉 AND she holds a Diploma in Pet Bereavement Counselling, offering comfort to families during their toughest goodbyes 🐾💔

Whether it’s quirky ticks or genuine compassion, Tina brings her own magic to the team every single day. Thank you Tina! 💙🐶🐱

🌟 May is Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month! 🌟

At Emergency Home Vet, we’re shining a spotlight on the incredible work of our Registered Veterinary Nurses — the backbone of our service and the calm, compassionate voices behind our emergency phone lines.

Our amazing team of RVNs bring a wealth of knowledge, clinical experience, and empathy to every call. They provide expert advice, reassure worried pet owners, arrange emergency vet visits when needed, and support our vets out in the field like the true "mother hens" they are 💛

We quite simply couldn't run our service without them, and we wouldn't want to! We're so grateful for everything they do, day and night, to help pets in crisis and the humans who love them.

🐾 Throughout May, we’ll be introducing you to the brilliant nurses on our team — keep an eye on our socials to meet the faces behind the phones!

🪺Happy Easter from the Emergency Home Vet team!🪺
Wishing you a joyful Easter filled with sunshine, smiles, and (safe) treats!

While you're enjoying your chocolate eggs and roast dinners this Sunday, don’t forget — Easter brings a few hidden dangers for our furry friends:

⚠️ Common Easter Hazards for Pets:
1. Chocolate – 🍫 Toxic to dogs and cats. Even small amounts can cause vomiting, seizures, and heart issues.
2. Hot Cross Buns – 🍞🍇 Grapes & raisins are highly toxic and can cause kidney failure in dogs.
3. Easter Lilies – 🌸 Extremely dangerous for cats. Even a tiny nibble can lead to kidney damage.
4. Cooked Bones – 🍖 Can splinter and cause choking, blockages, or internal injury.

If your pet gets into trouble today, we’re here to help — even on Easter Sunday!
Our emergency vets come to your home to provide fast, stress-free care when it matters most.

🐾 Myth Monday: “It’s Safe to Make My Pet Vomit at Home” – Think Again! 🐾

MYTH:
“I can safely make my dog or cat vomit at home with hydrogen peroxide, salt, or soda crystals. Everyone on the internet does it!”

TRUTH:
Inducing vomiting at home can be dangerous, even life-threatening – and most common methods people try are outdated, inappropriate, or downright harmful.

Let’s bust some risky DIY methods:

🚫 Hydrogen Peroxide – This can cause severe vomiting, stomach ulcers, or aspiration pneumonia. It’s not safe to use without professional guidance.

🚫 Salt – Giving your pet salt to induce vomiting can cause salt poisoning, which leads to tremors, seizures, or even death. Absolutely not recommended.

🚫 Soda Crystals (Washing Soda) – Highly corrosive and can cause chemical burns in the mouth, throat, and stomach. This is a veterinary emergency, not a remedy.

🚫 Mustard, Baking Soda, or Dish Soap – These are toxic irritants and have no place in a pet’s stomach. You could cause more harm than the original problem.

⚠️ When your pet eats something they shouldn’t, time is critical – but so is safety.
Always call your vet or an emergency service (like us!) before taking action. We can assess whether vomiting is even necessary – because in some poisonings, vomiting can make things worse.

🩺 At Emergency Home Vet, we come to you fast – and we carry the right medications and dosages to safely induce vomiting only when it’s appropriate.

🐾 Fun Fact Friday! 🐾

What’s one of the smallest but mighty tools in our emergency kit? 💉
Apomorphine! 🐶💊

This medication is used to safely induce vomiting in dogs when they’ve eaten something they shouldn’t - like chocolate, xylitol gum, or even socks (yep, it happens more than you'd think 👀).

⏱️ Time is critical in toxin cases, and because we carry apomorphine in our mobile emergency kit, we can act immediately at home — helping prevent absorption and potentially saving lives!

⚠️ (P.S. It’s not safe for cats, so we use different methods for them!)

🐾 Emergency Case!🩺🚑

Merlin, a 12-Year-Old Cat in Respiratory Distress:
At Emergency Home Vet, we understand that emergencies don’t wait for regular vet hours. One evening, Merlin’s owners found him lethargic, struggling to breathe, and refusing to eat. With their regular vet closed, they turned to us for urgent help.

🚨 The Critical Condition
Merlin, a 12-year-old domestic longhair cat, was in respiratory crisis due to fluid accumulating around his lungs (pleural effusion). This prevented his lungs from expanding properly, leading to oxygen deprivation. If left untreated, Merlin faced imminent respiratory failure. Transporting him in this unstable condition to a hospital could have worsened his distress. The symptoms observed in Merlin were:

✅ Severe difficulty breathing and open mouth breathing
✅ Weak and collapsed
✅ Irregular heart rhythm
✅ Weak femoral pulse
✅ Lethargic

🏥 Life-Saving Treatment at Home
Our mobile vet Joana took immediate action to stabilise Merlin before hospital transfer.

🔹 Mild Sedation for Comfort – We administered medications (to reduce stress and aid breathing, and to relax the muscles without major circulatory effects).
🔹 Portable Ultrasound – Confirmed fluid build-up around Merlin’s lungs.
🔹 Thoracocentesis (Chest Drainage) – The vet drained fluid from Merlin’s chest, providing immediate relief and the ability to breathe sufficiently again.
🔹 Oxygen Therapy – Provided throughout the procedure to ensure stable oxygen levels.

✨ The Outcome: A Fighting Chance for Merlin
After the procedure, Merlin’s breathing improved significantly. While still needing further hospital care for fluid therapy and heart assessment, our intervention ensured:

✅ A safer, more stable transport to the hospital
✅ Immediate relief from respiratory distress
✅ Increased survival chances

📢 Why This Matters
This case highlights the critical role of emergency home vet services. Our ability to stabilise pets at home before transport can make the difference between life and death.

💡 If your pet experiences a sudden emergency, don’t wait, call us immediately.
