Dry eye is a condition whereby dogs have a reduced tear film due to destruction of the tear gland.
If left untreated, the condition can become extremely uncomfortable and result in, inflammation, corneal damage or even blindness.

If you notice your pet
- Started squinting,
- Not fully opening one or both eyes,
- Red sore eyes,
- Face / eye rubbing.

Consulting with a vet as soon as you notice an eye problem, increases the chance of identifying any disease early and reducing the risk of complications.

Don't delay, contact our friendly team ➡ https://www.youngvets.co.uk/contact-us/appointments/ ⬅ to arrange an appointment for your pet.

Some great advice from Veterinary Voices UK

🐶 🌞 🐶 🌞

Please, Please take extra care with your pets in the coming days.

Small furries - Are their cages in the shade?
Can you place a cool mat under your hamster or gerbils indoor plastic cages to keep them cool?

Place a frozen water bottle into an old sock & into your Guinea pigs & 🐇 cage for them to lie against and keep cool.

Keep your cats & dogs water bowls topped up, place an ice 🧊 block or two in to keep the water cool for longer.

Keep your curtains shut around your home to help keep the heat out.

Try some trick training or brain 🧠 games if you have a high energy dog, to help reduce their energy levels.

Hot Forecast Due 🌅 Met Office Heat will build through the week. On Wednesday the highest temperatures values in the UK are expected to be around 27ºC.

Is it true that if we use cold water on heat stroke pets they will go into shock?

One of the most common things we still hear is that we can only use tepid water on a pet with heat stroke, incase they get some complications like hypothermic overshoot, peripheral vasoconstriction hindering a cooling response, and cardiogenic shock...

We have heard not to use cold water in case it causes shock... this rarely happens!

But guess what? In a recent study over 26% of dogs presented with heat stroke died, with flat faced breeds making up nearly half of heat stroke cases seen in the study.

You should:

💧Get someone to call the local veterinary practice and tell them you're going to travel down with a heat stroke patient
💧Pour, hose or if possible immerse the pet in very cold water (this should obviously be done under constant supervision, ensuring the head is fully above water and immersion should not be attempted if the animal is too large, or you are unable to do so without hurting yourself)
💧NB: If using a hose pipe, make sure it has run through until cold, as they can often contain water that is extremely hot in the tubing initially
💧Do not drape in towels and leave them in situ. Keep the cold water flowing.
💧Move to a cool, shaded area
💧Prepare to transport to vets in a cold, air conditioned car

In studies they found that:

🌅International consensus from sports medicine organisations supports treating EHS with early rapid cooling by immersing the casualty in cold water.
🌅Ice-water immersion has been shown to be highly effective in exertional heat stroke, with a zero fatality rate in large case series of younger, fit patients.
🌅Hyperthermic individuals were cooled twice as fast by Cold Water Immersion as by passive recovery.
🌅No complications occurred during the treatment of three older patients with severe heat stroke were treated with cold‐water immersion.
🌅Cold water immersion (CWI) is the preferred cooling modality in EHS guidelines and the optimal method applicable to UK Service Personnel
🌅Studies suggest using either ice-water or cold-water immersion

The best intervention is PREVENTION, but if you find yourself with an animal with heat stroke, using cold water either by pouring, hosing or ideally (if safe) immersion then this may help reduce their temperature to safe levels while you transport to a veterinary practice.

Grass Seed Season has well and truly arrived❗️

Please take extra care over the coming weeks to check between paws, in your pets groin area, in ears and tangled in fluffy hair!

These pesky seeds can cause no end of trouble, please check your dogs after every walk or at least the end of every day.

Thanks Red and Howling for the picture.

Some great advice from The Light Of Dog for the warmer weather.
☀️ ☀️ ☀️

Please take extra care if your pet is elderly, or a brachycephalic breed - Pugs, Bulldogs and Persians, but not forgetting lop eared rabbits with the flatter face look.

Check the pavement before putting your dogs paws on it for a walk, (test it with the back of your hand).

Leave the ball and ball-chucker at home.

Take it slow and steady, have a 'sniffy walk' or teach some brain games instead of a walk in the heat.

Pop a few ice blocks in the water bowl, this will help keep the bowl fresh, cool and topped up.

Never, EVER, leave your pet in the car.

S Stop access! It might seem obvious but stop any further consumption.
P Phone your vet, this is an emergency & must be dealt with.
E Emergency appointment, some poisons can take days to take affect, doing damage to the insides of your pet before you see the outside signs.
E Evidence, bring the label if possible.
D Don't delay!

Are you new to pet ownership? Not sure whats safe & what's toxic to pets - Don't panic.
