🌡️ Hot Weather Alert for Pet Owners! 🐾

As temperatures rise, it's important to remember that our dogs feel the heat even more than we do. What might seem like a pleasant summer walk can quickly turn dangerous—or even deadly—for your furry friend.

🔥 Why It’s Risky:

Pavement burns: If the ground is too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their paws. Asphalt can reach 130°F (54°C) or more on a 90°F (32°C) day.

Heatstroke: Dogs can't sweat like we do. They cool down by panting, which isn't enough in extreme heat. Heatstroke can come on fast and can be fatal.

Dehydration: Long walks in the sun increase the risk of dehydration, especially for flat-faced breeds like pugs and bulldogs.

🚫 Avoid walking your dog during the hottest parts of the day (typically 10 AM – 6 PM). Opt for early morning or late evening walks when the pavement and air are cooler.

✅ Tips to Keep Your Dog Safe:

Walk on grass when possible

Always bring water

Keep walks short

Never leave your dog in a parked car, even for a minute

Watch for signs of heat stress: heavy panting, drooling, weakness, confusion, or vomiting

Your dog relies on you to keep them safe—let’s make sure summer is fun, not fatal. 🐶💛

🏆💚 We’re thrilled to share some amazing news… 💚🏆

Streatham Hill Vets has been named Best Vets in London 2025 — and for the fifth year in a row! 🎉🐾

This award is based entirely on client reviews, so it means the world to us that so many of you have taken the time to share your experiences and support. Your trust, loyalty, and kind words have helped make this possible — and we’re incredibly grateful.

📸 Here’s a couple of photos of a few familiar faces from the team at the awards ceremony — Mary-Louise (our senior medicine vet), Yolinda (deputy head of customer services) and Danni (our practice manager) celebrating all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes to keep your pets healthy and happy.

We’re proud to be part of such a caring local community and will continue doing everything we can to offer your pets the highest standard of veterinary care.

Thank you again for making us London’s Best Vets — five years running!

With love,
The Streatham Hill Vets Team 💚🐶🐱

🐾💗 Sweet Little Bollie’s Visit! 💗🐾

We had the absolute joy of seeing Bollie today for a heart scan and blood pressure check. This lovely little lady has a condition called HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy), a common heart condition in cats where the heart muscle becomes a bit thickened over time.

The good news? Bollie is doing really well! She was calm and content throughout her visit, thanks to our fantastic vet Niamh, who performed her heart scan with great care, and our lovely student nurse Holly, who made sure Bollie was absolutely spoiled with cuddles the entire time! 🥰

She even had a little nap during her scan and is now back home for some well-earned rest and snuggles. We’ll continue to monitor her with regular check-ups, but for now, she’s stable and happy, just how we love to see her! 🌟

See you next time, sweet girl 💕

Fionny’s Trip to the Vet 💚😍🐾

This week, we cared for Fionny, a gentle 4-year-old Labrador, brought in for intermittent lameness and a slightly abnormal gait. His attentive family noticed subtle changes in his walk and brought him in for a thorough check-up.

After an orthopedic exam by two of our experienced vets, we recommended a CT scan to get a clear diagnosis. Fionny was placed under general anaesthetic to keep him safe and still during the procedure, allowing close monitoring throughout.🚑👩‍⚕️🥰

He handled it beautifully and made a smooth recovery, as shown in the video, he was soon up and enjoying a well-earned, home-cooked dinner of white fish and potato!🧑‍🍳💚

CT results showed signs of hip dysplasia, a condition where the femoral head doesn’t fit properly into the hip socket. In Fionny’s case, the socket is shallow and irregular, causing instability, inflammation, and potential arthritis. Early bony changes also suggest his body is compensating for the abnormal movement.

These subtle joint issues can significantly affect a dog’s comfort and mobility, making advanced imaging like CT invaluable. With a clear diagnosis, we can now create a targeted plan to keep Fionny happy, healthy, and active.💚🐶

we love you sweet Fionny 💚

Freddie’s Fight: A Tale of Courage, Love & Second Chances 💚

On May 8th, a sweet 6-year-old Corgi X named Freddie was rushed into our care. He was critically unwell, vomiting, not eating, and in a lot of pain. 💔😥

Scans revealed a foreign body in his intestines, and he was taken straight into emergency surgery. Our incredible vet team worked quickly and carefully, only to discover something even more serious: part of Freddie’s bowel had died. They had to remove the damaged tissue immediately to give him a chance.💚🐾

What followed was a true team effort. Freddie spent weeks under intensive care, facing not one, but three major surgeries. At every step, our nurses, vets, and VCAs poured their hearts into his recovery, monitoring him 24/7, making sure he was never alone.💚

Every walk he was able to take, every cuddle he received, every soft toy tucked into his bed, it was all part of helping Freddie heal.

One of the most emotional moments was when he finally ate real food again after weeks of being fed through a tube. We’ll never forget it.😍🙈

Today, Freddie returned for his check-up, tail wagging like crazy, full of kisses for the team that helped save him. He hasn’t forgotten the love he received, and neither have we.

💚🥰This video from his wonderful owner says it all, a heartfelt thank you to the team who never gave up on a little dog with a big heart.

Freddie, you’re a miracle. And to our team, you are the reason stories like this have happy endings.

This week, lovely Ethel gave her family a fright after eating grass on Friday – she became hesitant to eat and just wasn’t herself. When she came in to see us at Streatham Hill Vets, our team acted quickly to investigate.

Under the expert care of our wonderful team at Streatham Hill Vets, Ethel had a gentle investigation with an endoscopy to check what was going on. It turned out a pesky grass seed had lodged in her throat and caused some inflammation around her tonsil!

🩺🌱 Thanks to quick action and careful hands, the seed was safely removed and Ethel went home that evening feeling much more comfortable – and hopefully steering clear of any more garden adventures for now! 🏡🐾

Grass seeds may seem harmless, but they can cause serious problems for dogs and cats. Learn more about what to watch out for and how to prevent them getting stuck:

A big well done to Ethel for being such a brave girl – and a huge thank you to her lovely family for acting fast 💚

⚠️Grass Seed Season Is Here! ⚠️

And you must be particularly cautious when walking your dog as commons all around the country are being left to grow in a rewilding effort!

Case in point: this photo showing Tooting Commons just this morning! ❗❗

Grass seeds are arrow-shaped, and can easily enter your dog's body, causing infections and other serious health problems. They can also sneak into your dog’s nose, throat, or even lungs which can be fatal if not caught quickly.

Signs to look out for are:

- Sneezing
- Shaking their head a lot
- Gnawing at their paw
- Scratching their ear
- Squinting one eye

If you suspect your pet may have one or more of the above symptoms, bring them to our Streatham Hill Veterinary Surgery immediately! We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week - even on bank holidays! 💚
