Bess came to visit us a few times over the last few weeks because whilst she was getting into trouble and chasing a squirrel, she cut her leg! 🐶 (no squirrels were harmed in the making of this injury) 🐿
She’s been coming to see us every few days for a bandage change. We discovered she was very nervous and fearful at first, flinching when we touched her 🤕
Now, after lots of visits with treats and praise, Bess is excited to get into our consult room! She lets us change her bandage with no fuss as she’s too busy cleaning the treat paste off the side of the table 🍗😍
We are so proud of Bess and happy to report her wound is healing nicely! Good work Bess ❤️
As mentioned in our last post, Luna’s condition means she feels no pain. This began as minor scrapes when she was around 6/7 months old, but sadly progressed to her chewing off 2 of her toes. Understandably it scared her family who rushed her straight down to us. We were forced to amputate the rest of the damaged toes.
A month later Luna wasn’t feeling herself, and we sadly discovered her leg had become infected from another wound. Despite this she was running around, wagging her tail, still being our happy girl. The decision to amputate her leg was reached and the next day the leg was removed. Luna recovered like a champion afterwards. We have included a video of Luna in our garden walking and playing on her three remaining legs a few months later 🐶
Luna will have her condition for the rest of her life. Despite everything she has been through and challenges she faces, she is our happiest, friendliest patient who does nothing but make people smile. We are proud to know her and her family, and to share Luna’s story ❤️
Luna has a very rare condition called Sensory neuropathy. This condition is hereditary and is passed on to the puppy when both of the parents are carriers of a defective gene.
Sensory neuropathy affects both the sensory and motor neurons of the body. In Luna's case her sensory neurons are significantly affected and this means that she has no sensation of pain. This may not seem dangerous but it means that she can hurt herself quite badly without even realising it. For example stepping on a piece of glass and not noticing it's there at all!
Luna also has some dysfunction with her motor neurons which means that when she walks or runs around it is a little uncoordinated. She doesn't let this bother her though, and she spends a lot of her time running around with her friends in the park 🐶
Lunas condition has lead to her having a few procedures with us, which we will talk about in our next post. For now here she is with Saul enjoying some love on the floor in consult ❤️
Does anyone have any tricks or tips for helping our furry friends deal with the heat? ☀️
Here’s Jasper enjoying a broccoli and pea ice lolly, one of his favourite treats when it’s hot out! Charlie makes them with vegetables and water, and Jasper loves nothing more than a shady spot and his cold treat 🥦
Have a lovely weekend everyone ☺️
