Not that we wish to scare anyone but a month from today hopefully we will all be sitting there wishing we hadn't had that extra serving of Christmas Dinner the day before whilst reaching for the mince pies that are being handed around having just come back from a dry (hopefully!!) Boxing Day walk with those around you who were not in to much of a food coma!!

Scary to think that Christmas is now less than a month away! Probably should think about making a start on the shopping!
Here at OLK9 the trainers have been taking the dogs to shopping centers and restaurants that are all decorated for the festive season to show them the displays.

Believe it or not there is 4 dogs in this picture! See if you can spot them all!
We have Koda the Husky/Malamute cross (left of picture) who took part in the 2 Week Board and Train Programme with Katie.
Chunk the Husky/American Akita (right of picture) who took part in the 2 Week Board and Train Programme with Vicky.
Baloo who is our trainer Katie's dog (front left of the picture)

And last but not least....

Arthur the FEARLESS Pug (front right of the picture). Whilst Arthur could quite easily walk beneath any of the other 3 dogs we were told he spent the day walking around like he owned the joint with having his bodyguards with him!

Are you thinking about getting a dog or puppy for Christmas? Is it going to be your first family dog or first time getting a rescue? If so and you have some questions or unsure about how to go about ensuring you have the training and know-how in place for the new fluffy addition to your family why not contact us via the details below and one of our accredited trainers can talk to you giving advice or talking through the training programmes we offer for dogs whether they are young pups or older rescues. No matter the background of your dog our passionate trainers will give it their all to train your dog to their highest ability allowing you all to have the best of lives together.

Storm Bert has rolled through the UK this weekend and we hope that all of the pets and their owners are doing OK!

Lucky the Labrador wanted to check in on all the smaller dogs as even he thought he would take off like a kite in this wind!

In extreme winds like we have and have had recently its always good to be careful when you are out and about for both your sake as well as your dogs.
As we have just had a lot of trees loose their leaves and some of the dead branches recently there is a lot of debris being blow around and with dogs being that much closer to ground level they are more likely to be in the danger zone of things being blown into their faces or mouths that isn't going to be good for them.
Remember to try and plan your walks where possible along less tree lined paths and maybe think about doing a shorter walk in this weather so there is less likely harm comes your way. Its never hurt a dog having slightly less time on a walk compared to taking the risks that come with going further and walking in harms way.

Hands up who is playing Whamageddon this year?!

For those of you who don't know how to play the game let us explain. Starting on the 1st of December players try to avoid hearing 'Last Christmas - Wham'. The winner is who can reach the furthest through December without hearing the song played. It doesn't matter if it is just the first notes or whether its the full song, as soon as you hear any part of it your game is finished.

Mika the Chow Chow was hoping to improve on last years score of 10th December. This was the moment she heard it being played in a shopping center during her training but thankfully was reminded that the game doesn't start till December so she is safe.

Have you made your Christmas plans yet? Are you worrying about going to visit or having friends and family over and how your dog is going to be? If you are hoping to be able to take your dog with you or have a house full and feel that your pup could do with some topping up on their obedience why not give us a call on the number below for a free 30 minute telephone consultation with a certified OLK9 trainer or check out our website linked in our bio and below to see what training programmes we offer.

This Weekend starts with another 5 star review this week comes from this lovely ball of fluff Soju the Cavapoo

Soju was enrolled on our 2 Week Board and Train Programme with the aim to further the puppy training she had had as a young pup.
She also came with a habit of wanting to eat thing's she found out and about on her walks that are not polite dinner time conversation.

Soju is a very inquisitive pup by nature however this also led her to also acting like she was the star of Prison Break and seeing every open door as an opportunity for freedom and explore the wider world.

Vicky worked on these issues during time spent with us. There was reinforcement of door manners and that an open door was not people being polite to her for being a lady to cross through but one to check the surroundings and wait until allowed to go out. She also worked on her need to eat everything she found on walks to ensure that her owners were happy to give her kisses at the end of the walk rather than reaching for the breath mints!

Soju responded exceptionally well and completed her training with flying colours as you can see by the review left by her owner.

If you have been thinking about training to work on your dog’s Off Leash capabilities, General Behaviour or just that you would like to further improve on the commands they already know, please get in touch with our team via our website (Link in our Bio) or on 0203 890 3400 for a free 30-minute telephone consultation with a certified OLK9 trainer. Alternatively, we can be reached through social media or message us via Google. Our trainers are used to all breeds and quirks and can’t wait to provide the same training and care they have provided to all the dogs that have come to us up until now.

Toby the Whippet is a lovely example of his breed and spent two weeks with our trainer Vicky for his Board and Train working on his unpredictability with other dogs and his need to pull on the lead.

Whippet's resemble the Greyhound and Italian Greyhound often being referred to as a miniature Greyhound or the poor man's racing horse.
This is slight unfair to the whippet as they have the highest running speed of any breed in it's weight and size category reaching up to 35mph.

In the UK the whippet was a popular dog in the northern areas as well as Wales and often used for racing. During the 19th century it was identified that there was two types of Whippet. One had a smoother coat and was the fore runner for the modern day whippet and the other had a rougher coat having been cross breed with the Bedlington terrier.

They do need a large amount of exercise as their bodies are designed for it even down to their internals which has lead to some being misdiagnosed with heart problems by both owners and vets alike. But whilst they are happy to run to their hearts content they are also noted as dogs who love to sleep and cuddle in a nice warm spot described by the American Kennel Club as 'Quiet and dignified in the warmest spot of their owners living room.'

Unlike more traditional job roles our trainers can't just leave their work at their desk when looking to engage in their social lives, especially when they have dogs for Board and Train Programmes.

Anyone who has a dog or previously owned a dog knows they are not just a 9 till 5 lifestyle. Often most of us change our lives to revolve around them.
That is why the dogs that are in our care for their training often have both structured and unstructured training sessions mixed in with the trainers lives.

Here is Luna the French Bulldog looking extremely happy to have been the latest dog to have been adopted as the mascot for Staines Women RFC at Staines Rugby providing side line enthusiasm during one of their training sessions and cuddles from the team. Although cuddles were only accepted after muddy hands had been washed! No dirtying the coat thank you very much!

Now this quote might not be referring directly to dogs but Bella the Golden Retriever has taken it literally during her recent training.

'Dogs have a way of finding the people who need them and filling emptiness we didn't even know.'
Thom Jones

Poppy the Rescue may have filled a dog shaped hole with her owners but they also filled a loving hole that poppy was missing during her start in life.

Poppy had developed leash reactivity that many rescue dogs can do as it can be restricting for them when they are so used to always finding space if they needed to escape whilst on the streets. Alex our trainer spent a lot of time working on her confidence and ensuring she felt safe on and off lead.

Today's model for our Social's is Koda.

Koda has a beautiful colouring thanks to her multi dog heritage of Husky/Malamute.

Koda joined us for our 2 Week Reactive Board and Train to work on her issue with dogs that were smaller than her which had grown from other smaller dogs coming up to her and picking fights, which lead to her thinking that all smaller dogs were like this and decided she would get the first word in.

She also saw open doorways as an invitation to walk out. Which is fine if she had been asked but more often than not the stubborn aloofness often found with her mix of breeds meant she took matters in to her own hands.

Katie her trainer will spend the two weeks working on these issuse with Koda performing her magic as she so often does.

Our trainers can have up to 2 or 3 dogs on a Board and Train Programme at one time. This can help with dogs socialisation as well as learning off each other during training. It is also why our trainers will meet up with each other with the dogs that they are training as it provides good training opportunities. It can be especially the case for those dogs who come to us who can be highly distracted by other dogs.

Sometimes, they become acquaintances acknowledging they are in the same space but generally keeping themselves to themselves.
And at other times, and especially in the case of these two, they can become best of friends and almost inseparable.

Buddy The Goldendoodle and Ivy the Golden Retriever met during their training programme with Hannah and as you can see in these pictures are besotted with each other spending as much time as possible with each other. Most of their pictures are together except when Hannah is doing their individual training and they are quite happy spending as much time with each other as possible.

Another week down and with it comes the opportunity for us to shout about another of our trainers.

This weeks review comes from Ollie the American Akita's Owner.

Ollie was a typical stubborn Akita who had a bit of an issue with authority listening to the commands given by his owner. However in during playtime he was affectionate as can be, which is always appreciated by owners except with the size and pure muscle that was Ollie his tendency to jump on his owner was a bit to much. He also used that muscle and wanted to be right at the end of his lead taking his owner along for a walk.

Katie spent the duration of Ollie's training working on these issues often falling back to her own training with Baloo, her American Akita. At one point we thought it was touch and go if Katie was going to let Ollie go home with how much Baloo and Ollie had become firm friends.

The term Office Dog has started to become a lot more common in the work place.
Between people working from home during lock down and having their furry family members keeping them company during their day of work (or more often than not interrupting important zoom calls) or as more offices are now allowing dogs join their owners for the day, they are now becoming an integral part of the office furniture.

However Ben and Amy's dogs have very different ideas on how to support their owners during a day working in their offices.

Scout, Amy's Golden Retriever/Hungarian Vizsla cross, offers emotional support in the form of holding a plushie should Amy need support during her day and is always ready for a cuddle and pets.

Lulu, Ben's Husky/German Shepherd cross, on the other hand takes a much more laid back, hands off approach to her support making sure she is comfy first and only feels the need to come close when she decides its her walk time or if Ben has been slacking on giving her treats!

It's the middle of the week and just like Apollo the Great Dane we are running full tilt with a bullet like focus for the weekend hoping it comes sooner!

The Great Dane is one of the two largest dog breeds in the world along side the Irish Wolfhound. They are descendants of Middle Age hunting dogs used to hunt Bears, Boar and Deer.

During the 16th century they were known as 'Englische Docke'. They were largely imported to Germany as guardian dogs and used as guardian with a slight name change to 'Englischer Hund' meaning English Dog.
In their role of guardian they often slept in the head of the house's bedchamber earning them a nickname of 'Kammerhunde - Chamber Dogs.'

In 1878 there was a German committee that was formed and changed their name to mean German Mastiff and as they were introduced across Europe as a Luxury dog and with changing climates they eventually gained the name we currently know them as, The Great Dane, which was derived from the French name, 'Grand Danois'.

So despite having Dane as part of their name leading to many people thinking that they are associated to Denmark which is not the case at all!

Despite their large size, often being referred to as a small pony, they are typically lovable family dogs being very loyal to their owners.... even if they can be clumsy due to not knowing their size leading to some very funny videos posted on the internet!

Meet Coco the Pocket Bully with her beautiful colouring that will turn heads where ever she goes!

Coco spent time with Ryan our trainer working on her reactive nature when it came to other dogs. She would initially want to be friendly but once up close and saying hello often freaked out and struggled with meeting new dogs. With her being a very good example of the breed known for its stockiness she also tended to be the one taking her owner for a walk rather than being taken on a walk.

Ryan worked hard on her socialisation and lead walking and she had a very successful two weeks completing her training with flying colours.

Our trainers regularly meet up and support each other when it comes to training dogs, and this is exceptionally helpful when the dog in training has a specific issue that one of the other trainers can help with.

A good example is for Toby the Whippets training.

Whilst he got along quite happily with some dogs, he could be very reactive to other dogs which whilst seemed to be mainly male dogs but could also be female dogs as well.
Our Trainer Vicky's dogs (on the log) are very helpful in supporting her when it comes to training the dogs that come to stay with them aren't always the most intimidating being on the smaller side.

However our trainer Katie's dog, Baloo the American Akita, is 44kg of pure muscle and despite how happy and chilled he may look in this photo with his tongue out, hanging out with his pals, for a lot of dogs he is the definition of pure intimidation.
Vicky has worked hard during Toby's training and you can see here he is more than happy to sit next to Baloo (who really is a big softy in reality) compared to before where he would be trying to have a scuffle with him instead.

Friday has come round again! Which means its time for another Review.

Today's review come's from Simba the Rhodesian Ridgeback's owner.

Simba took part in our 4 Week Basic Obedience Lesson Programme. He struggled walking on his leash and pulled for most of the walk. And in an effort to say hello to someone he would run full tilt at them and try to jump up at them. In both cases being a Rhodesian Ridgeback his size meant these were not good things to work with.
Over the 4 weeks Hannah worked with Simba and his owner giving them the training during the lessons to work on these situations both in and outside of the training.

If you have a dog that you think would benefit from training, whether it is for a specific problem or just to improve on their general obedience, and would like the opportunity to leave one of our trainers a 5 Star Review please do not hesitate to get in contact with us and find out how our trainers can help you today.

Time and time again our trainers prove that they have a knack for taking stunning photos for the clients of their dogs in some great locations.

Loki the Hungarian Vizsla along with his trainer Vicky's dogs looking every bit the professional model. Even having perfected the stare off into the distance look whilst the sun sets.

Loki had recently been on lead rest due to an operation and with being quite young hadn't had a chance to learn doggie etiquette and socialisation before having to be kept away during his recovery. This lead to him thinking every dog was a friend and not picking up on other dogs less than enthusiastic return greeting.
Vicky had Loki for our 2 Week Board and Train working on both his socialisation with other dogs as well as learning to not jump all over people in excitement when meeting them.
