Regular and sweet potatoes are a good source of vitamin A, minerals and fibre. And they’re a safe option to give your dog as an occasional treat 🥔

But, it’s important to make sure they’re properly cooked to break down solanine – a toxin in potatoes that can be harmful for dogs.

While most of us are familiar with certain foods that are toxic to dogs (we’re looking at you, chocolate🍫), you might not know about some of these hazards lurking in your home.

Sugar-free mints and chewing gum, for example, are easily snaffled by curious pooches and contain xylitol, which can lead to liver failure.

We’ve pulled out some common culprits as well as some toxic foods that take many pet parents by surprise in our latest guide: https://bit.ly/4bE5adV

We might call it a skin hero and superfood, but there isn’t so much evidence to show it’s beneficial for dogs 🥥🐶

It might help to reduce inflammation and moisturise dry skin, but it’s very high in calories and can cause stomach upsets if eaten too much.

Did you know that your dog’s dietary needs change slightly as they age? 🕰️

The ideal diet for older dogs is high in protein 💪 but low in calories – as they begin to slow down a little.

As their metabolism slows, older dogs might need up to 50% more protein than they did in their younger years 🥩 This means a balanced, raw diet is ideal.

Raw lamb bones can be good for dogs. The marrow and cartilage contain calcium phosphate and collagen. But:

⛔ Cooked lamb bones are dangerous – they can splinter and cause choking.

🦷 Overly large, dense bones can damage your dog’s teeth.

🦴 Instead, buy fresh raw bones sold by a reputable dog food brand.

🐶 Follow the instructions on the packet and always supervise your dog while they're chewing.

There are lots of reasons why your dog might be feeling hunger pangs…

🦴 They’re not getting enough food
Check you’re not accidentally underfeeding your pooch, especially if they’re active.

🦴 They’re genetically prone to overeating
Some dogs carry a variant of a gene called POMC, which influences their hunger and fullness cues.

🦴 They’re stressed or bored
If you keep your dog mentally stimulated and active every day, they’re less likely to abnormally obsess over food.

Yes, adding ice cubes to your dog’s water can be a great way to help them cool off when it’s hot. But there’s one big exception:

🧊 If your dog is showing signs of heatstroke, icy water can make things worse.

🧊 That’s because it can make them shiver, which actually builds up more heat.

🧊 Signs your pooch might be suffering include excessive panting, pacing or drooling.

🧊 In this case, use room-temperature water and a fan to cool them off. Call your vet if you’re worried.
