πΎ #tb2017π Teaching Boston to pick-up a toy! One of the practical training skills I had to demonstrate during my MSc in Clinical Animal Behaviour ππΆI got a 85%, not perfect but ainβt bad π
Dog training with a touch of science βοΈπ
1οΈβ£ Classic conditioning is about pairing neutral cues, like a verbal cue with something like your fav food. For example, showing the toy while saying βchatβ followed by a tasty treat creates a positive association between the toy and βchatβ. ππ€€
2οΈβ£ Operant conditioning is all about cause and effect. When a dog performs a desired behaviour, like sitting on cue, they receive a reward, such as a tasty treat. This encourages them to repeat the behaviour in the future. Through operant conditioning, dogs learn to associate their actions with outcomes, shaping their behaviour accordingly. π
3οΈβ£ Overshadowing is when one cue overshadows another, making it harder for the dog to learn both. Imagine teaching your dog to respond to both a verbal cue and a hand signal for βsit.β If you consistently present both cues together, but the hand signal is more noticeable, your dog may focus on that and ignore the verbal cue. To avoid overshadowing, itβs best to introduce cues separately at first, then gradually combine them once your dog understands each one individually. ππ
4οΈβ£ The Premack principle is all about using preferred activities to reinforce less preferred ones. Itβs like saying, βWork first, play later!β For example, you can reward your dog with a game of Tug, my dogβs fav activity, for successfully responding to a cue, like sitting. This motivates them to perform the desired behaviour in anticipation of the enjoyable reward.π
5οΈβ£ Discrimination learning is about teaching dogs to distinguish between different cues and respond appropriately to each. Itβs like understanding someoneβs instructions in a busy place β you need to filter out the noise and foc
ππΎ Claudia and I are over the moon to congratulate our latest intermediate class students! π In our intermediate class, we focus on a crucial skill: having your furry friend maintain focus on you, even amidst distractions. πΆ Itβs all about building that strong bond and communication between you and your pup! πΎ
Congrats to Scout, Blue & Herbie. Keep up the amazing work, everyone! ππ«

NEW PUPPY CLASS STARTING THIS SUNDAY 30th @ 12 p.m in KENSAL RISE W10 - visit our website for more information & booking https://www.animalwellbeingcentre.com
Our puppy classes are carefully thought to ensure we set every puppy and their pawparents up for success, which is why every family has its own section so puppies can be as relaxed as possible and learn.
It's a common belief that socialization means simply exposing your puppy to lots of people and other dogs. However, that's only part of the story.
Socialization is a critical part of a puppy's development process. It allows the puppy to learn to communicate and interact with other dogs and people in a way that is appropriate and safe. But socialization doesn't mean throwing your puppy into a sea of stimulation.
Socialization needs to be done thoughtfully and gradually, ensuring that the experiences are positive, and the pup is not overwhelmed or frightened. The main goal of socialization is to help the pup to learn new experiences, gentle behaviours, and to understand how to react in different situations.
In summary, socialization is an ongoing process that should involve regular, positive, and supervised experiences for your puppy, ensuring that they are exposed to new situations, people and dogs in a supportive and gentle way, to help them to develop into happy, confident, and well-adjusted adult dogs.

πΎ Teaching your dog to leave food without asking them to and to look at you instead is very handy because if your dog finds some food in the ground before you, you won't have time to cue them to leave it πΎ
This video is not in the final stage. Later, we will reward Spot for looking up voluntarily and then; the actual game will begin! Sometimes he will be allowed to have it; other times, he will be asked to leave it. Either way, we will reinforce Spot for making the right choice. β£

But let's stay focused: Here is an example of how a Juvenile Assessment Consultation may look at the centre. While we discuss in-depth the behaviour problem to understand its cause, dogs are free to explore, which in addition allows us to assess how they respond to novelties. β£

Henny refuses to walk wearing a harness. Thatβs fine. Some dogs do. Like I refuse to wear π π
π If you teach your dog to connect with you and walk nicely next to you without pulling on the leash, a flat collar attached to a leash (not extendable!) is totally fine by me.
βΌοΈ If youβve been advised to use a [half] choke collar OR slip leash, be aware of the potential physical dangers that they can cause:
- whiplash
- crushing of the trachea with partial or complete asphyxiation
- crushing and/or fracture of the bones in the larynx
- dislocated neck bones
- bruising of the esophagus
- brain damage and prolapsed eyes caused by sharp increases in pressure in the head
- to name just a few -

When the training is fun, the bond is strong! ππΊ

π Training using positive reinforcement helps turning fear, anxiety into joy and fulfilment - for both, human & dog.

Background:
βArchie, rescued as an adult, found 1 month before being adopted, in May 2020. He was found tied inside a bin bag inside a rubbish bin in poor condition. At first, he wouldnβt go out, was reactive to strangers, noises & movements.β
.
π Changes in problem behaviour can take some time.
π With Archie, it is still a work in progress, but he has managed to come this far, so soon, thanks to his hoomansβ dedication and patience! π
