TOP TIP FOR REACTIVE DOGS💪

Sometimes when we are working with reactive dogs, we get surrounded by too many triggers and are unable to move away. In this instance need to distract our dog while the triggers pass. I carry a bottle of Green and Wilds Fish Sprinkles with me in my work bag as I find it works really well to get their nose to the floor to sniff that tasty fish dust! I also use it to help a dog decompress too!🐟

BALL: PLAY & SOCIALIZATION
1. Fleece strips work really well but I had an old pillowcase laying around so decided to cut this into strips instead
2. Dry treats work a little better as I find when you roll soft or wetter treats up, the strips become really gross really quick 🤣
3. Stuff all the tightly rolled strips into the hol-ee roller. You can stuff it completely full or just a few strips. I did about half as Griff already had had a Kong and a decompression walk today so was tired!
4. I recommend making this in advance so you can keep in the cupboard ready to go when your dog needs a nice sniffy exercise to relax, or if you are needing some mental enrichment👃.

Griff had his mind blown when we went into @wolfe.vets this morning! The biggest ostrich bone we had ever seen! He convinced me that we couldn’t leave it behind and it should probably come home with us…🤣.

1. General recall as there were some kids with a football and lots of other dogs entering the park.
2. Coming away from other owners who have treats! So so important!!
3. An alternative to a “leave it” cue which has often been poisoned by owners by only using it in a negative way, or not proofing it enough.
4. Distracting him away from a group of dogs and people as more and more kept joining. I don’t mind him playing with dogs in the park but when there are too many, we move on 🙌.

BONE BALL BARK
1. Grab a selection of treats. I used @naturesmenuonline cat treats (ingredients and composition suitable for dogs and they are cheaper to buy than the dogs!), some of his @akelawholeprey dog food, and a handful of @feelwells_healthy_dog_treats treats.
2. Pop a few treats into each box and close the lids. You could then fill with old magazine pages to make it harder but I didn’t have any.
3. Place your dog and set up the boxes!
4. Release them and watch the fun🥰.

1. Use your dog’s fave treat! With Griff, this is cucumber!
2. I have a few recall cues I use with him including, but not limited to, Touch”, “Come Here” and whistling.
3. We have practiced over and over associating the cues with coming to me for something he absolutely loves.
4. I now randomly will give a recall cue when he least expects it (he was inside chewing a bone), and reward him with his fave🥒.

Took the opportunity to go through the stock I have in back while Griffin is out! All of these will last a LONG time, and I take into consideration calorie amounts etc so as not to overfeed. I mostly use his kibble for treats at home, and save the good stuff for more distracting environments. The chews are 1/2 of one to a whole one (depending on size, fat content etc) once a day. Unfortunately this isn’t all of what I have, just what was in the back room hahaa 💪💪.

Thee speed of development is insane and a lot changes week to week, month to month. Before lockdown, we started work with Lenny on some counter conditioning towards strange men (we used Doug for this set up as Lenny doesn’t know him). Lenny would get into a bit of a fear based barking frenzy when she saw a guy she didn’t know, and if the guy was moving, or coming through a doorway, it was just too much. We started out by having Doug the other side of the door, not front on to Lenny and not making eye contact. From a distance, every time Lenny glanced in Doug’s direction, her wonderful owner would mark it and throw the treat away, enabling Lenny to gain some more distance from Doug as part of the reward and decide where she was comfortable coming back to. We repeated many times before we changed the set up to a different door, then appearing at the door, and then starting to open the door (this video). Look at Lenny’s body language, head upright, ears forward, tail wagging and fairly relaxed💪.

Set ups are so very important when you are doing BAT style work. You need to ensure everyone’s safe and comfortable, as well as the dog. Her owner is standing in a location that enables Lenny to do a quick glance as opposed to worrying about him behind behind her. I decided to not have Lenny on leash as this gave her more opportunity to move and get distance, and not feel any pressure from the leash. She isn’t wearing a muzzle as she has no bite history and Doug was comfortable with that. I highly recommend taking some time to condition your dog to a muzzle if they are reactive however, as you never know when you may need it🐶 .

Having a lot of fun working on body positioning and directional movement with Maisie! Her owner doesn’t want her trained for any obedience competitions, just increased body awareness, good leash walking and handler focus. This is just the start of the journey but she has made such great improvement already, from a dog that would pull your arm off and have no idea you were even attached to the other end of the leash🙌.

Buzz absolutely nailing recall with distractions during only our 2nd puppy beginners class last Saturday at @dougs_dogs 💪 His owner not only had to call him while out of sight, but keep him interested and motivated in following through as he passed his playmate Juno, using a high and excited tone of voice 🙌 .
