How to avoid and help with heat strokes 🔥in cats and dogs:🐈🐕

🐾 Keep your pet inside, in the coolest area of the house if possible.

🐾 Provide plenty of water bowls spread around the house (add ice to them)

🐾 If you suspect a heat stroke, you might be right! Get a wet towel and some ice pads (if you don't have these you can use ice inside a bag) and put them over your pet. Make them drink as much as possible!

🐾 Frozen or cold wet treats and fridge cold wet food really help!

🐾 Keep the back of their ears cool and wet.

🐾If you have an area with wooden floors or tiles, use a damp cloth to cool them down.

🐾Use fans

Inspired by Mental Health Awareness Week I have spoken with people who either work with psychiatric patients, with the elderly suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s and with people who went through clinical depression and asked them how having a cat close to them helped them through a hard time....

How high must a cat tree be??? Find out the secrets of these furry climbers in my blog post!

Does your cat have a high perch or a cat tree where they can climb up to? Whenever I'm working with cats and their families I find myself asking this question and the answer is always "Yes!, we have a cat tree" Following by my deception when I see a cat tree shorter than me, and I'm 5"1. So how high...

I ❤️ Puzzle Feeders!!!!!!!! They help with obesity and separation anxiety... check out my new post:

Puzzle feeders promote both mental and physical stimulation for your cat... but why? 1) Cats are natural hunters: This might be the most important reason: In the wild, cats would spend a large amount of their time hunting for food. The lovely dishes we provide for them are ok because they fit their....

When you are a cat behaviourist and know that their whiskers hurt against these bowls' edges and that's why they "ask" us to put the food right in the middle 🤷‍♀️😿

⛲️Whiskers on point, tongue out and SLRUP! 😻Cats love running water, especially if it's cold! That's why they would prefer to drink form your glass or the tap instead of their bowl.

Does your cat have any weird water bowl behaviour?

Leave the litter box and food outside so they can follow the smell.

Sometimes I hear the following statements from cat owners:

😾He’s upset I went out last night and peed on my bed.
😾He’s jealous of my new boyfriend.
😾He scratched me because he could smell the neighbour dog on me.
😾He doesn’t like being called “Monkey”
😾He knows better than to go up the counter.
😾He hates the red car that passes by every day.

Even though cats can be very “human” and sense some things from our world, for example, if we’re ill they’ll keep us company, we need to understand their minds are quite different than ours.

We should try to avoid adding human feelings to our cats. They never feel jealousy or hate a car for being a bright colour. What might have happened the night that owner went out and the cat peed on the bed is that there was something that scared the cat. Or he had a UTI.

Is there anything your cat is doing that looks human?
😾

Imagine, being covered in fur in this HEAT! 🥵🥵🥵 How to help your cat get cool.

-First thing's first: Water
Put as many glasses and water bowls around the house as you can and keep them fresh and clean.

-Freezing blocks are very useful this time a year, and not only to keep your picnic basket cool, but your cats will want to be near them.
When they are no longer frozen, you can probably lay them over your cat like my friend Katie did earlier today 😸
You can also cover these with kitchen towels and put them in a cool area of the house. Cats feel drawn to sit over a new surface. You can also put them in a box. Cats love boxes and they will try to get in them.

-A wet towel on the floor or favourite nap spot is always helpful. Especially if the lay on the floor and not on the carpeted areas of the house.

-Another way we found online is that Amazon sells "Cooling mats for pets" at an affordable price and they seem to work quite well.

-You can add ice cubes to the water, or my favourite trick yet: Fill up a plastic bag with water. Freeze it. And then add the frozen round shaped iced water into your cat's water bowl. They will definitely try to check that out, and even lick it.

-One thing to do as well is to keep your cat well groomed. Help them get the excess of hair off: less hair, less fur, less heat.

-Close curtains and blinds during the day. Ok, so that will help you as well. If you let those sunrays in, the house will get a lot warmer.

Remember> the more the cat stretches, the warmer he feels. 😽

Very often I have this conversation:

Cat mum: -He went in the living room! he's never done that before!

Andrea: -Something must have changed in the house or he's feeling insecure. Let's put a litter tray in the living room.

Cat mum: -Oh no, nothing changed around here

Andrea: -Well, he's telling us something is not right. What did the vet say?

Cat mum: -I took him to the vet, he says he's fine.

Andrea: -He must be feeling insecure, or uneasy about something. Let's put a litter tray in the living room where he peed.

Cat mum: -Oh no. It'll look bad and smell, and I don't have the space.

Andrea: I promise you, this isn't forever. It's only to encourage them to go to the litter tray instead of your carpet.-

Sometimes, our cats "act out". That is because there is something wrong and we can't tell what it is. This is how they communicate with us.
Sometimes we should sacrifice some things for the sake of communicating better with our cats.
Don't be ashamed of litter boxes, cat mats and other favourite items. They are just making your kitty feel at home.😸🥰
