Amazing Roo is one of our fave golden oldies - she's been totally blind for a few years now but she never lets it slow her down, so she certainly isn't about to let her arthritis do the same - bring on the acupuncture (& treats!) ♥️

Dear friends,

It’s hard to put into words how amazing the team at Westside have been during the pandemic. We are all working as hard as we can to ensure that we can still provide top care for you and your family members.

The whole veterinary profession is under more pressure than ever. Many vets and nurses have left because of stress and exhaustion, finding locum cover is incredibly hard (partly due to Brexit and partly due to COVID). Add to this extra pets – 3.2 million people obtained new pets during lockdown in the UK, all needing health checks, vaccines and advice.

Our team has been here through all of this and we have all picked up extra hours at work to ensure we can continue to provide you with a service. We are all tired, but we continue to show up. We will always endeavour to prioritise emergency and urgent cases and we know it is frustrating when we can’t always offer an appointment that is convenient for you, but we appreciate your ongoing support. We are trying our best.

We are short staffed at the moment. We are currently unable to take any new registrations and we will be delaying routine vaccinations for 3 months so that we can prioritise cases that need urgent medical care. We will also be unable to supply Animal Health Certificates for pet travel abroad for the next few months. We will honour the ones that we have already booked for the next few weeks.

Thank you for your ongoing support and understanding. We understand that it can be upsetting when you animal is ill and we will always try and help, but please remember to always be kind to our staff.

From all at Westside Vets

Dear friends,

Although we have not yet seen any cases at the practice, we are aware that there are reports of a few cases of Parvovirus in young dogs, who have been fully vaccinated.

This is a serious gastrointestinal infection affecting dogs, with signs such as severe vomiting, bloody diarrhoea and lethargy and without treatment can be fatal.

We recommend a full puppy course of vaccinations - usually two doses, from a minimum age of eight weeks old, although with some vaccination brands one is adequate, but due to the presence of maternal antibodies which can persist until 16 weeks old, some dogs are still susceptible to infection despite the initial vaccination course. The annual booster at one year old is imperative, as this ensures that any puppies who have not had adequate protection will be covered.

We are now recommending additional vaccinations against Parvovirus at 16+ weeks old and again at six months old to ensure puppies do not 'slip through the net' in their immunity. They will still need an annual vaccination as Parvovirus is just one of the diseases we vaccinate against.

Dogs who have been fully vaccinated and have already had their one - year vaccination do not need to have an additional vaccination. Older dogs who are restarting their primary course of vaccinations will continue to require only 2 vaccinations, given 4 weeks apart.

Kind regards,

The team at Westside Vets
