🚨We interrupt your evening scrolling to bring you this ridiculously adorable video of Rico, our prehensile-tailed porcupine tucking into his veggies 🥹🥕

Rico arrived at the zoo last week, and our keepers are pleased to share that he is settling in very well! Although he’s still a little shy, he very quickly comes out of his shell at dinner time - clearing all of his fruits and vegetables in no time at all!

🌎 Native to the forest canopies of South America, this incredible species is herbivorous, feeding on a variety of flowers, leaves, roots, shoots and fruits!

Have you been lucky enough to spot Rico on a recent visit?🐾

📣🐒INTERNATIONAL PRIMATE DAY🐒📣

Today we are celebrating the amazing diversity of primate species that share our planet with us, whilst also raising awareness of how vital it is that we all take on the responsibility of conserving these creatures in the wild for future generations.

Today, over half of all primate species on Earth face extinction. Habitat destruction, poaching and the exotic pet trade of primate species is pushing these animals to brink of existence, and its down to all of us to protect them.

Our campaign highlights the pitfalls of irresponsible social media usage and its impact on wild primate populations as well as captive primate welfare. Primates will never make good pets, and sharing seemingly cute videos of pet primates online can fuel the demand for primates within the exotic pet trade. Protect wild primates by ensuring what you share on social media doesn’t unintentionally promote the primate pets trade.

By living more sustainably, protecting ecosystems and making a stand against the trade of primates as pets we can all contribute to their conservation. Modern zoos are collaborating on vital breeding programmes such as EEP’s as well as in-situ conservation projects to fight against the extinction of primate species.

🐾 Our newest arrival ‘quill’ melt your heart 💚

We are delighted to welcome Rico, a young male prehensile-tailed porcupine from our good friends over at Hemsley Conservation Centre in Kent. With Hemsley being the most experienced facility caring for this species in country, we are proud to offer Rico his own habitat here at Battersea as he has reached the perfect age to move away from mum and dad. Only a handful of zoos across Europe care for this species and so it is a real privilege to join them 💚

We’d like to thank our maintenance team and keepers for their hard work in preparing our new porcupine habitat! In preparation for Ricos arrival our team were joined by Adam, Zoological Director at Hemsley, for a husbandry training session to prepare our team for our rare new arrival - and we can’t wait for you all to meet him at the zoo! 👋

We are so proud to show that just one day of focussed education can make a real difference in changing visitor opinion 💬

If your organisation would like to join, then please email [email protected] or visit our website:

It’s a PIG day for our team 🧡🐷

This morning our keeper team said goodbye to our wonderful litter of Oxford Sandy & Black Piglets, who were born at the zoo on 19th June 2024. They’re travelling a short distance down the road to our project partners Tom's Farm where they will continue to support their breed, with some going on to breed themselves one day too. 🐖

With as few as 350-500 individuals remaining, they are one of our “at risk” native breeds, and feature in the Rare Breeds Survival Trust watchlist. Today they are being saved from disappearing forever by dedicated keepers up and down the country, supported by the amazing work of the Oxford Sandy & Black Pig Society 🐷

We know many of our members and visitors have loved watching our cheeky piglets growing up over the last couple of months. Especially seeing mum Ruth doing such a fantastic job of raising such a big litter! We can confidently say that Ruth is very much looking forward to the peace and quiet - and no longer needing to share her food! 🍎

We want to say another huge thank you to the dedicated people behind the Oxford Sandy & Black pig society for their collaboration with this project. We look forward to continuing our work to protect this breed going forward.

Our breeding sow, Ruth, and her companion Winny are huge characters on our farm section, so be sure to stop by and meet them at our daily pig talk at 1:30pm! 🧡

This morning Jamie and Lizzy were called out to a fun fair near to the zoo where a young fox had become entangled in netting overnight.

Distressed and unable to escape, our team responded quickly to prevent him from injuring himself, cutting him free from the netting before a quick health check and releasing back into a densely planted area of the park 🦊

Although this particular fox wasn’t tangled in litter, this rescue is yet another reminder of how vulnerable our native wildlife is to litter and other man-made threats within their habitats. It’s important that we all protect our green spaces, ensuring it’s safe for animals, disposing of litter responsibly and helping to promote our wonderful native wildlife 💚

Zookeeper C-BEE-D 🐝 🍯

Recently our wonderful keeper team suited up and joined apiary manager Annie for a practical session working with our honeybee colonies.

Our honeybee apiary in collaboration with the London Beekeepers Association allows practical, hands-on engagement for visiting school children, budding beekeepers and extra educational opportunities for our visitors. Many of our visitors have been learning about bees and native pollinators at our daily honeybee talk at 11:30am! 📣

Continuing professional development (CPD) for our zookeepers comes in many forms, and it’s something our team constantly engages with to improve their knowledge and skills. 📈

Here, our keepers were learning about health and disease screening for honeybees, all to ensure our hives are in tip top health. They were also lucky enough to spot one hives queen, checking the broods health and identifying different types of honeybee. 🐝

Look at this VERY good boy 🥹🐶♥️

This week we had the pleasure of welcoming assistance dog Rowley to the zoo.

Making nature accessible for all visitors is very important to us, and at the heart of all we do here at the zoo. To be able to welcome those with trained assistance dogs opens more opportunities for us to share our important conservation from work both across the globe and here in the UK.

We only allow trained assistance dogs in the zoo and as part of this policy we do have a number of conditions that must be met before any assistance dogs are allowed onsite. So be sure to check before visiting with your assistance dog.

Rowley is a guide, assistance and medical alert dog, and with his training and distinguishable harness, we were delighted to have him visit the zoo with his lovely family.

To learn more about our accessibility policy and guidance on assistance dogs visiting the zoo, please visit our website at the link below:

Cotton-top tamarins are native to a tiny pocket of north-west Colombia and are one of the rarest primates in the world.

Here at Battersea we are proud to support Proyecto T**i, a Colombian charity working to protect cotton-tops, working with local people to ensure the survival of the species. 🌎

🎉 🐒 Happy cotton-top tamarin day! 🐒 🎉

Today is the international day of the cotton-top tamarin, a critically endangered primate we have worked with for many years at the zoo. At BPCZ we are celebrating Nellie and Diego, our cotton-top tamarins, and their wild counterparts! 🌴

Cotton-top tamarins are native to a tiny pocket of northwest Colombia and are one of the rarest primates in the world. Between 1960 and 1970, up to 30,000 cotton-tops were exported to the US for biomedical testing, resulting in the species becoming critically endangered.

Here at BPCZ we are proud to continue our support for Proyecto T**i, a Colombian charity working to protect cotton-tops, supporting local people to ensure the survival of the species. Come and visit our education team at their fundraising stall, and join in with games and extra talks throughout the day!🙊

Proceeds from our stall will go directly to protecting wild cotton-top tamarins 💚

✨VISITOR SHOUT-OUT!✨

We would like to give a massive shout-out to superstar visitor Greta, who made it her mission to write down the names of ALL of the animals at the zoo! With the help of her fabulous assistants, Chloe and Asa, she’s created a a whole book full of names! (Maybe we could pass it on to the keepers to use as a morning animal register!)

Massive well done to Greta for all her hard work! And a big thank you to zoo staff Gemma, Lizzy and James for their help!

Storm ♥️ snacks

For such a little monkey, Storm the emperor tamarin sure does have a big appetite! Does anyone else get this excited for dinner time?!

Emperor tamarins are small primates native to the north Brazilian states of Acre and Amazonas and the southwest Amazon Basin, in east Peru, and north Bolivia. 🌎

Emperor tamarin populations have been in decline in recent years due to the threats of deforestation and human encroachment on their forest homes. Forest fragmentation has become a huge problem for arboreal primate species in the Amazon: fragmentation causes the tamarins range to be restricted, causing populations to be isolated. ⚠️

At BPCZ we are proud to be a part of the European Breeding Programme for this amazing species. Working collaboratively to conserve their numbers from continuing to decline.

❤️ RARE BREEDS WEEKEND WRAP-UP ❤️

We would like to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who came along to our first ever Rare Breeds Weekend!

Supporting our native rare breeds and local British farming comes hand in hand with protecting the environment. Our native breeds are intertwined with the British landscape. They play an integral role in providing ecosystem services including environmental land management and promoting biodiversity.

Reducing our reliance of imported food reduces our carbon footprint, meaning we can protect the planet by eating locally sourced food that’s farmed in Britain.

Next time you visit the zoo, keep an eye out for our rare breed species and make sure you say hello! 🐷🐓🐏

Missed out on the fun? Don’t worry! We’ll be back with more summer fun on Wednesday for our next Wild Wednesday! See our website for more details.
