🚨We interrupt your evening scrolling to bring you this ridiculously adorable video of Rico, our prehensile-tailed porcupine tucking into his veggies 🥹🥕
Rico arrived at the zoo last week, and our keepers are pleased to share that he is settling in very well! Although he’s still a little shy, he very quickly comes out of his shell at dinner time - clearing all of his fruits and vegetables in no time at all!
🌎 Native to the forest canopies of South America, this incredible species is herbivorous, feeding on a variety of flowers, leaves, roots, shoots and fruits!
Have you been lucky enough to spot Rico on a recent visit?🐾

🐾 Our newest arrival ‘quill’ melt your heart 💚
We are delighted to welcome Rico, a young male prehensile-tailed porcupine from our good friends over at Hemsley Conservation Centre in Kent. With Hemsley being the most experienced facility caring for this species in country, we are proud to offer Rico his own habitat here at Battersea as he has reached the perfect age to move away from mum and dad. Only a handful of zoos across Europe care for this species and so it is a real privilege to join them 💚
We’d like to thank our maintenance team and keepers for their hard work in preparing our new porcupine habitat! In preparation for Ricos arrival our team were joined by Adam, Zoological Director at Hemsley, for a husbandry training session to prepare our team for our rare new arrival - and we can’t wait for you all to meet him at the zoo! 👋

🐵 Pet Primates? 🙈
Our #ShareSavvy campaign aims to protect wild animals, such as capuchins, from the exotic pet trade, which leads many to live in low welfare conditions.
Our flow chart at the video will help you navigate social media, to protect capuchins from dangerous misconceptions 💚

Happy Cotton-Top Tamarin day from us all at Battersea Park Children’s Zoo! 📣 🐒
Cotton-top tamarins are native to a tiny pocket of north-west Colombia and are one of the rarest primates in the world.
Here at Battersea we are proud to support Proyecto Titi, a Colombian charity working to protect cotton-tops, working with local people to ensure the survival of the species. 🌎

Thank you @oceanariumbournemouth for this brilliant video on Asian short clawed otters for #ShareSavvySaturday! 🦦
While our annual event may be over, the campaign goes on and it’s not too late to join us! Just email [email protected] for more information 👩💻
Thanks again to all those who held stalls, made videos or shared our posts this Saturday. By pulling together, we really can make a chance for all animals affected by their portrayal on social media 💚
🥳 That’s a wrap! 🥳
We’ve had the most amazing inaugural #ShareSavvy Saturday at Battersea Park Children’s Zoo. We’ve met so many people, had so many fantastic discussions and feel so positive about the future of wild animals social media 📱
We will only improve the problems faced by wild animals if we all pull together and work for the same goal. We’ve been so grateful to the organisations who have joined us so far, particularly those who have made and shared videos across their own social media. Don’t forget, you can join this campaign at any time, just visit our website for more information 💚

🐾 Are Our Keeper Experiences #ShareSavvy? 🐾
When we started this campaign we pledged to reassess our own behaviours at the zoo, including how we offer keeper experiences 🤔
These experiences are such an important part of how we share our love for the animal kingdom, however we needed to make sure that we were not creating opportunities for images which could be taken out of context and misconstrued, going against the message we try to portray every day 💔
We are so proud to offer keeper experiences which we think are truly #ShareSavvy, where visitors can experience the inside world of the zoo, without compromising the welfare of wild populations 💚

“I want one!”🦦
This is a phrase our keepers hear very regularly and kickstarted the #ShareSavvy campaign. Every day our keepers do a public talk about Asian short clawed otters, and why they don’t make good pets, following a rapid increase in otter pet ownership at the same time as a population decline 💔
You’ll never see our keepers feeding our otters from inside the enclosure. This is for the safety of our keepers and our otters, but also, to ensure that no images of humans and otters accidentally get misconstrued once shared online 📱
This is one of my many ways in which we have pledged to be #ShareSavvy

#ShareSavvy Meerkat Talk 📱
Every day over the summer holidays you can hear our keepers discuss meerkats at their daily keeper talk. Sadly meerkats have been glamourised as pets, and so we make sure we educate as many people as possible about the wild characteristics of meerkats, as well as how they are affected by the pet trade 💚
Here’s keeper Jack giving us a taster of his talk 📣

What are our visitors saying? 📢
As an educational attraction and conservation zoo, our priority is not only ensuring that our visitors have a great time, but that they take away something to learn too 💭
#ShareSavvy is all about changing perceptions about how social media affects wild animals, and what a fantastic educational day we’re having so far, on #ShareSavvy Saturday! 💚
@officialbiaza
Thank you so much to @thecivetproject for their #ShareSavvy video! ☕️
Civet coffee may be a popular trend, but the effects of it are hugely detrimental to both captive and wild civets. It is these trends on social media that highlight how careful we need to be when online 💔 Follow us and The Civet Project this Saturday 3rd August as we share more information about the #ShareSavvy campaign! You can also visit the zoo on Saturday for FREE workshops and other activities 📱 💚We’ll see you then ✅ #ShareSavvy #ShareSavvySaturday #civet #civetcoffee #conservation #newcampaign

Our meerkat pups are making their summer holiday debut! 🥰
Meerkat Ariana welcomed quadruplets on the 29th June 2024! After many weeks inside the den, our newest additions to the meerkat mob are exploring the outside world with their family keeping a close eye on them.
The pups will learn important social skills like play and communication from the older meerkats, as well as natural behaviours like foraging, burrowing and grooming. They’ll also learn about the mob’s hierarchy, and eventually how to take turns in looking out for each other by sitting on sentry duty and guarding the mob from potential predators, just like in the wild.
Be sure to visit us this summer holidays - we are open every day from 10am - 5:30pm 🐾

It’s a new week so here’s a new #ShareSavvy video, this time from @shaldonzoo 💚
It’s a new week so here’s a new #ShareSavvy video, this time from Shaldon Wildlife Trust 💚
Shaldon are raising awareness about the impact social media has on the pygmy slow loris, a small, venomous nocturnal primate 🌙
Slow loris have been glamourised on social media as pets, as photo props in tourism selfies, as well as becoming part of cruel social media trends 📱 🤳
Behind these photos is a cruel trade, where loris are often poached directly from the wild before having their teeth removed and are often kept in poor conditions 💔
Please do not like, comment or share videos which show slow loris being kept as pets, or in unsuitable conditions. Please also take a look at the Little Fireface Project project, who protect slow loris in Java, Indonesia 🌏
Thank you Shaldon Wildlife Trust!

🐭 Harvest Mouse Release 🐭
This week we took 65 more harvest mice to restored habitats in Ealing, West London, for reintroduction to the wild, as part of a collaboration with Ealing Wildlife Group 🌾
2000 mice have now been released as part of this scientific conservation programme, and regular surveys show that the population, which in 2021 had been extinct since the 1970s, is now making comeback. Better, biodiversity is also being restored to the area with the return of other species, such as little owls 🦉
Our native species are under threat making the fight against biodiversity loss, particularly in our urban areas, more important than ever. Captive conservation programmes like this are more vital than ever before 💚

🚨 Breaking news from our Scottish Wildcat conservation partners Saving Wildcats!🚨
Wildlife conservationists have announced the birth of wildcat kittens in the Cairngorms National Park 🏴🐯
Following the release of 19 wildcats last summer by the Saving Wildcats partnership, led by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS), at least two females have given birth in the wild. This marks a significant milestone in the project’s efforts to restore the wildcat to Scotland, after the species was determined to be on the verge of extinction in 2018.
Here at Battersea Park Children’s Zoo, we have welcomed 5 Scottish wildcat kittens in recent years as part of the breeding programme, with male cats born at the zoo selected and moved to the reintroduction centre to father kittens destined for release into the wild. Wildcats born at BPCZ are helping to save their species from extinction, and we couldn’t be more proud!
