✨ COMPANY AWAY DAYS ✨

Last week, we welcomed the team from to the zoo for a company away day!

Following a private guided tour of the zoo (and of course, lots of tea and coffee!), the team got to work helping us out with some very useful jobs around our site. Being such a small team, it’s a great help to us to have some extra hands when it comes to things like landscaping our enclosures or retouching our barns with a lick of paint! We then, of course, finished our day by meeting some of our fantastic animals and helping to dish out their lunch! 🐾

We’d like to say a big THANK YOU to the team for all their help and their positive attitudes through the day, despite the cold! ❤️

If you’re interested in a unique company away day that blends team building and contributions to animal care, please see our website or email [email protected]

Bali starling bathtime 🛁🕊️

This half term we are shining a spotlight on our lesser-known animals with our “underdog week” at the zoo! Join our keepers everyday at 11:30am for our Bali starling talk, until Sunday 23rd February! 🔦

We are incredibly proud of the work we do to safeguard the future of the critically endangered Bali starling, but they are often sadly overlooked by those visiting the zoo! Today, we are one of the most successful zoos taking part in the European Endangered Species Breeding Programme (EEP) currently operating to save the species from extinction 💚

Bali starlings are one of the rarest birds on the planet and today they only exist because of the dedicated work of modern zoological facilities. Shockingly, there are now fewer than 50 Bali starlings left in their native forests as a result of trapping for the illegal songbird trade and habitat destruction. ⚠️

Be sure to pay our starlings a visit on your next trip to the zoo to learn about these true underdogs and their role in saving their species from extinction 🌟

We are saddened to see this article by the BBC about the issues faced by a species we are proud to support at the zoo, the African Grey-crowned crane 🪶

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cm21r7qd16ro

Grey-crowned cranes are the national bird of Uganda, even appearing on the nation’s flag 🇺🇬

Sadly, due to habitat loss and hunting, their population has declined by 80% in just 25 years 😢

This magnificent bird is monogamous, meaning they pair with one partner for life. They solidify their bond by bowing, dancing and jumping, a ritual which you may have seen our cranes, Boris and Barbara, take part in 💃

Unfortunately, being monogamous means that if they lose their mate, they are unlikely to find a new partner, further increasing the impact of habitat loss and poaching 💔

Here at the zoo we are proud to support this species. Boris and Barbara are part of EAZA’s managed studbook programme, which aims to protect a healthy and thriving population of grey-crowned cranes for many years to come ❤️

🎉Celebrating 20 years since the reopening of Battersea Park Children’s Zoo! 🎉

Mark your diaries, as this May half term the zoo will be transformed into a festival of celebration, marking 20 years since its rescue from closure by the Heap family.

With a rich history since our founding in the 1950s, the mission of Battersea Park Children’s Zoo was ignited by our reopening as a conservation zoo in 2005.

Today, we are proud to be the only specialised children’s zoo in the United Kingdom. Home to over 100 animals, many of the species within our care are part of international conservation programmes to save them from extinction. Of the 45 species living at the zoo, those native to the British isles are incredibly close to our hearts, a legacy brought to the zoo by the Heap family and their history of rescue and rehabilitation for native wildlife.

Connecting with our community, forming conservation collaborations and welcoming over 5000 school children to the zoo each year, sharing our passion for wildlife will always be our focus.

This May half term, we welcome you to join us at the zoo for our festival of celebration where you can discover our history, and be a part of our future.

🥳 HAPPY BIRTHDAY DUSTY!🥳

Today is Dusty the donkey’s 20th (yes 20th!) birthday!

You may have seen Dusty and his best friend Smokey running around their field with a football in their mouths! These best buddies love being together and can often be found play fighting or snuggling up in their shelter, hiding from the rain ❤️

On such a special day, Dusty has received extra scratches and treats from the keepers (he did request 20 carrots to celebrate 20 years but the keepers thought that might be a bit excessive!)

If you’re visiting over the weekend, be sure to wish Dusty a very happy birthday and send him lots of love! 🎉❤️

Ruth is off to meet her new boar-friend Ozzy!♥️🐷

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, one of our Oxford Sandy & Black sows has departed the zoo for a romantic holiday away - all to save her breed from extinction! ♥️

Our keepers are excited to share that Ruth has been spending a few weeks with her perfect match at a farm in Essex! He was specially selected for her in the hopes of producing piglets and increasing the genetic diversity within this native rare breed.

This beautiful breed is classified as “at risk” of extinction by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust (RBST) with as few as 300-500 registered individuals remaining. Today we have just 13 female bloodlines and 4 male bloodlines remaining, meaning that breeding has to be managed carefully to improve their gene pool.

Ruth will return to the zoo in a couple of weeks. It is hoped that her time away is a success and that one day soon we will have another healthy litter of piglets at the zoo.

To learn more about the important work being done to save our native rare breeds, please look into the projects being carried out by the RBST and the Oxford Sandy & Black Pig Society 🐷

🦎🍃 NEW ARRIVAL! 🍃🦎

Our keeper team is delighted to share the arrival of a male prehensile-tailed skink to our reptile and amphibian house, having moved to the zoo from our friends at Exmoor Zoo 💚

Our new male, named Akara, joins our female skinks, Uki and Makira! It is hoped that we will one day welcome baby skinks from this vulnerable species and contribute to maintaining a healthy population in human care.

Aptly named after the Solomon Islands from which they are found in the wild, Prehensile-tailed skinks are the largest skink species in the world! They can reach lengths of up to 80cm and live high up in the forest canopy, using their prehensile tail to support their dynamic climbing ability!

Today this species is classified as ‘near threatened’ by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The species is in decline in their native forests due to the destruction of their habitat and over exploitation by the exotic pet trade. This, coupled with their very slow reproductive rate, means that the survival of the species depends on human intervention and habitat restoration.

BPCZ takes to Parliament! 🇬🇧

On Tuesday 28th January, Jamie and Lizzy addressed MPs, lords and leaders from a number of conservation organisations with a presentation on the impacts of irresponsible social media use on the illegal wildlife trade 📱

Our team spoke at a joint meeting between the Parliamentary Group for Zoos and the Parliamentary Group for International Conservation for a special session on the international wildlife trade 🤝

Alongside speakers from the Wildlife Justice Commission and the Initiative to End Wildlife Crime, Lizzy’s campaign highlighted how close-contact imagery with wild animals on social media can unfortunately promote the wildlife trade 💔

It is hoped that this campaign can make a real difference for wild animals affected by the illegal wildlife trade, through education as well as pushing for legislative changes that protect wild animals online 💚
