🐾 INTRODUCING OLIVER 🐾

Meet Oliver, a remarkable young man whose unique bond with dogs transcends words. Drawn to the canine world, Oliver finds purpose and joy in giving his time to helping out at HHH after school, where he is never afraid to get his hands stuck in, and in return our dogs encourage to overcome his natural shyness and to build his confidence. His friendships with our pups speaks volumes about the extraordinary relationships between humans and dogs that can exist beyond our understanding.

🐾 INTRODUCING LINDSEY 🐾

Our dedicated early riser, Lindsey has been the HHH Morning Manager for over a year and a half, welcoming our hounds into the daycare. Mornings are very busy here at HHH, with up to 25 dogs being dropped off in all weathers dogs. It takes a special person to oversee this process; getting dogs settled into the daycare adn preparing the site for another day of training and fun, with her calm head and quick-thinking she is an unshakeable leader, with a rock solid and reliable attitude who supports the daycare team around her. Lindsey puts the safety and happiness of our four-legged guests first, as her number one priority. Her dulcet Irish tones can soothe even the most nervous pup on their first day, and calm crazy teenage zoomies in seconds. When she’s not at HHH, she’s a FUR REAL superhero, running a discrimination advice line for people living with HIV for the National AIDS Trust and with her legal training she has supported HHH through our lobbying work with both local and national government bodies on daycare licensing. Lindsey is currently the Editor of our new HHH newspaper. To Lindsey, lots of Power, Paws & Kisses from the whole pack xXx

🟡 Edita - HHH Manager & Owner 🟡

Edie’s sixth sense is understanding dogs.

She has a natural instinct working with dogs – whenever we are having difficulty practising a new skill or perfecting behaviours Edie will swoop in, effortlessly command the dogs’ attention, and help us troubleshoot the issue.

She has been training dogs since she was a little girl, and despite her various other skills (judo champion, cabaret performer, and successful interior designer, to name but a few of her crazy past lives) her passion to help dogs and their owners led her to create Hairy Hounds in Hackney.

As a boss, Edie is a committed teacher, supporting all our staff to become better trainers. She is the Mr Miyagi to our Daniel LaRusso, the Marco Pierre White to our Gordon Ramsey, the Yoda to our Luke Skywalker. What she’s done for the community of dog lovers in Hackney is insPAWrational ;) , and Homerton would be a dystopian chaos of untrained dogs without her. We woof you Edie!

🟡 DOG GROOMING – THE NAKED TRUTH 🟡

We humans often think of haircuts and beauty treatments as a relaxing, self-care experience, but for your dog, being groomed is often stressful and scary.

At HHH we make dog health and wellbeing our priority, offering on-site grooming to our regular daycare dogs; in a familiar, calm and safe space.

Grooming can take anything between 2 to 3 hours so it is nice for our dogs that they can take a break, stretch their legs and mingle with their friends, without having to wait in cages or a small enclosure.

Our experienced groomer Agata has been grooming our dogs for 3 years and is always able to call on a helping hand from our staff, known and trusted by our dogs. Agata prioritises two grooms per visit, which means she has plenty of time to make our dogs comfortable without rushing.

You can also minimise stress for your pup by:
* Conditioning your pup to be familiar with nail clippers, the hairdryer and brushing them with a de-matting brush not just a top surface brush.
* Making positive associations with treats in order to make grooming a more neutral experience with some reward (beyond a sharp-looking haircut)
* If you have a puppy take them to good groomer early for a puppy groom session, without the expectation of a full groom. This way groomers can take time getting your pup comfortable. Where possible stick to the same groomer if your pup seems to be happy.

🟡 Residential Training 🟡

We have an exclusive space available for HHH residential training.

❔What is Residential Dog Training?

This training is suitable for owners who wants to get basic training nailed-down from the beginning.

🐶 Training a puppy is a daily, continuous process – that teaches the basics of good dog behaviour and sets them up for the best start to a happy and well-socialised life.

🐾We build good habits from start by rewarding wanted behaviours and preventing or ignoring unwanted behaviours. Our aim is to get your pup to present ‘automatic behaviours’. For example: if you open a door or outside gate - we want your pup to automatically “Wait “ before they are allowed to go through. Out and about, we teach our pups to automatically “wait” before we let them say ‘hi’ to other new dogs - giving you control to select safe dogs for your pup to socialise with.

🐾 Our typical residential training clients are have busy lives and need guidance in working with their pups, particularly with more demanding breeds, by starting early we build good behaviour habits for life.

❕We only take on pups for this process, unless we know the dog and have made a safety assessment to be around our young child.

🐕 I specialise in training larger breeds so your Doberman, Rottweiler, or Shepard pup will be in very safe hands. However I equally enjoy working with bouncy Spaniels or other smaller breeds.

❔Why is our Residential Training different?
We invite owners for a weekly training visit - for them to see progress and to practice working with their pup. If a dog is with us for longer we will incorporate weekend visits where your pup stays with you. This gives us an opportunity to discuss if you had any challenges and we can shape our training accordingly.

🟡 Party Poopers 🟡

Walk with caution on Hackney Marshes & our local parks! We have been made aware of a number of cases of dogs ingesting what we have nicknamed ‘party poos’. Due to the warmer weather, parties & picnics many people who have taken drugs have also felt the need to use bushes & trees as their toilets. We strongly advise using a long training lead especially with known scavengers & to avoid bushy areas.

If your dog has ingested a ‘party poo’ these are some of the common signs:

🤢 Vomiting & diarrhoea
😵‍💫 Disorientation & lack of coordination
😢 Dilated pupils
😴 Lethargic/Drowsiness
🤤 Salvation
😡 Aggressive/agitation

‼️ Please note that these symptoms may vary depending on what drug that have ingested. ALWAYS consult your vet as soon as you realise that your dog is not ok. It is likely that they will need medical assistance especially in cases where they may have multiple types of drugs in their system.

🟡 Morning Time At HHH 🟡

Good morning!

We take the health & happiness of our hounds seriously. Welcome to our daycare morning routine!

👋🏻 8-10am
🐾 Just before 8am we arrive & start the day by opening up our indoor space to allow fresh air inside, blinds are put down & doors left open to keep the space cool (in winter we put the fire on!)
🐾 Outdoor beds are put down, in summer these are moved around to keep the dogs settled in shade & stay cool
🐾 Water bowls are filled with fresh water, if it’s a sunny morning, also the pool!
🐾 Dogs slowly start to arrive, they are always so happy to see us & their friends!
🐾 As more dogs arrive we incorporate training into our routine; waiting, stop, gate management polite greeting & re call away from gate
🐾 Every morning we disinfect all outdoor surfaces, toys, bowls & any puddles with a dog friendly cleaner F10 to kill any potential nasties
🐾 All lunches are brought to the kitchen & any wet or raw food is put into the fridge
🐾9:30am a third member of staff arrives as we have more dogs by this time

🎾 10-11:30am
🐾 Any washing hung up from the previous day is folded & put away
🐾 Beds are put back into position after floors being washed the previous evening and water bowls are re-filled
🐾 After the last dog arrives for the day we open up the entire site for ball & sniffer games, scent work & agility training.
🐾 Enrichment activities are set up for the day, treats under cups, hide toys around the site & in boxes, navigating/moving objects to get treats out
🐾 Finally a coffee break!
🐾 We water plants & do a bit of gardening & general up-keep of the site as we think of new and fun ideas for the dogs to enjoy the space

😴 11:30-1pm
🐾 Rest time! We have 3 designated rest times throughout the day. Pups learn to settle around distractions and have a nap.
🐾 Coming in for rest is another training opportunity learning polite door manners for entry and exit.
🐾 In winter we have our log burner lit to make it nice and cozy, in summer we open up the container door and have lovely air con breezing through to keep our doggos cool
🐾 Around 1pm we come out & the evening crew swap with the morning crew

🟡 Dog Shooting 🟡

‼️ We noted with alarm recent incidents involving violent dogs in our parks: attacking and killing other dogs, a threat to owners and attacking a police horse

❌ However, we don’t condone the recent police shooting of two dogs on the lead an inhumane, painful deaths shot at close range.

It looks more like an ex*****on to make a statement around enforcing the law, rather than an act of protecting the public or the officers on the scene.

We are having huge problem in general and our solution is to fine and penalise irresponsible dog owners. (All irresponsible dog owners) With large fines and for serious dangerous acts - prison sentences. This problem with the rise of out of control “protection statement dogs” will not go away by shooting two dogs on lead who were clearly not out of control (they were barking but which dog would not in that situation).

With austerity, crime is on the rise and so is the popularity of powerful, seemingly aggressive dogs that make a statement. The real criminals don’t care about having their dogs seized and destroyed. So violence is neither a deterrent or the solution. You need to make owners legally responsible for their dogs and then attitudes will change.

⁉️ We are shocked and appalled!

🟡 Let’s Talk About Daycare Licensing 🟡

Today we were happy to welcome CLLR Susan Fajana-Thomas, CLLR Anya Sizer and CLLR Lynne Troughton to our urban training doggy daycare to discuss issues with licensing and how those have an impact on Urban Daycares. We are hoping to start a discussion with Hackney Council about a fairer system that will support Urban Daycares to raise welfare standards and still thrive.

🐶 Our dogs were as always amazing ambassadors of HHH with some taking it upon themselves to check and greet the visitors. All of them stayed calm and cool even when we had sudden thunder followed by a hail storm!

❤️ Thank you once again to our amazing team for showing why our daycare is so unique and important

🟡 Pup In The Pub 🟡

This little princess has been struggling with staying calm in restaurants/pubs, lots of barking resulting with a stressed dog & owners.

🐶 For context, this dog is generally perfectly behaved, happy & well trained

🤔 PROBLEM: We observed that the clients have been treating her at the wrong time: just after she has been barking, not before which can accidentally re-enforce and encourage unsettled behaviour (this is more common than you think!).

When she arrives she would be overexcited, pulling on the lead and is typically first through the door - seeing other dogs, people & being in an unfamiliar busy place she would start barking, when she stops, she gets a treat for stopping barking, this repeated several times encourages barking in order to get reward.

Once at the table when she sits still for a few seconds she gets a treat, stands up, paces, barks, stops for few seconds & gets another treat.

✅ WHAT WE DID DIFFERENTLY:

🐾 We walked calmly & without pulling to the venue. Rewarding only zero tension on the lead & preventing pulling before it happens.

🐾 We entered only when she was calm. I have entered first checking for potential trigers.

🐾 I have walked around the venue with her on short lead treating relaxed, calm behaviour.

🐾 We found the perfect spot on a sofa (not too quite & not too busy) & I have marked using a clean blanket the allocated spot to rest (Please note that some pups will simply relax better when they are higher up and that I will not engage in ANY discussion on why dogs should not be in restaurants or on furniture).

🐾 I have restricted her movements using the lead & I only treated when she settled for longer than 1 minute or remained quite around movement. I have marked verbally “Good” any potentially stressful situation coming up (person approaching) before reaction. Anticipation of a treat prevented reaction.

🐾 This indicates to your dog that you are aware of potential “danger” & that the behaviour you want from the dog is to stay calm & relaxed.

😴 And this was enough for her to relax and fall asleep while we enjoyed our well deserved mocktail.

🟡 An Afternoon At HHH 🟡

Ever wondered what happens behind the closed gate? Come and spend an afternoon with us!

🦴 12:30-2pm Lunch Time
🐾 Our doggos come out after the second rest around 12:30 to stretch their legs, have a run while some choose to lounge on bean bags.
🐾 We start to prepare lunches and then feeding. This is another training opportunity for gate management, pups come in one by one, sit, wait & then leave feeding area, our doggos are also practicing all round patience around food prep.

😴 2-3:30 Post Lunch Nap
🐾 We make sure to have plenty of rest times as we do spend a lot of time outside & young puppies need rest. We teach our dogs ‘go to your bed’ to settle around other dogs.

🎾 3:30-5:30 Training & Play
🐾 We open up our entire site for sniffer games, fetch, tug-of-war, agility & general puppy shenanigans.
🐾 We monitor play style & interrupt any rough play. Our young ones will learn this way what is ‘Good Play’ (will be allowed to continue) and ‘Bad Play’ (will be interrupted)
🐾 Working with our central gate for more gate training, which includes practicing “wait”, “stop” & “re-call"
🐾 Dogs on create rest get sniffer boxes, puzzles & separate toilet breaks

🏡 5:30-7 Rest & Home Time!
🐾 In winter & cold weather we go inside for a rest & our collections begin. In summer our dogs will continue to sunbathe in our main garden area.
🐾 Our hounds learn how to rest with distractions around: us cleaning & answering doors.
🐾 All dogs learn (eventually) to stay calm & to come to the door when name is called.
🐾 When we send them through our door or gate it is perfect opportunity for “re-call” training as they run to greet their pawrents. It is very cute for us to see all the love at the end of the busy day 🐶❤️

🦈 Bite Inhibition 🦈

This little shark demonstrates beautifully why it is important to teach your pup a bite inhibition.

🤔 What is it?

Bite inhibition is a dogs ability to control the strength and use of their bite. This is very important to teach them as a young pup, but to also continue training as they develop.

❕Teaching it correctly your dog learns to moderate the strength of its bite so when exited around food, upset or involved in disagreement your dog will effectively only use a soft mouth.

🟡 Happy New Year! 🟡

Tomorrow we will all wake up to a New Year & I would like to thank everyone who has made last year a good year, where lots of little almost insignificant steps took me and HHH on quite an unexpected journey.

🐶 I will start by first thanking our incredible team without whom HHH would not be such an amazing place. Rosie for being my rock and really stepping-up to co-manage HHH and take care of our new admin system and social media, Lindsey for choosing to stay another year before starting her Law training and for supporting me on our lobbying mission to change the DC licensing system. Lucy for always bring a good cheer & never saying ‘no’ to extra help when it was most needed, Fifi for asking intelligent questions that I know will take her further along the path towards dog obedience training. And to Aysen who as the youngest member of our team (except for Maja) has proven to be reliable and very helpful.

✅ This year we have hosted few important visits from Hackney councillors, our MP Dame Meg Hillier & DEFRA representative in a hope to highlight issues with the current licensing system and hoping to raise more understanding around the challenges faced by urban daycares. I have visited Hackney council and the house of parliament; thank you to our local Councillor Lynne Troughton for listening to us when no-one else would.

✅ We have talked to many other daycares and created a lobbying group to combine our efforts and get our voices heard towards establishing a new, fairer licensing system as part of a proposal to be submitted to DEFRA.

💛 2023 has been a challenging year for me, that has highlighted how important collective support and effort is in creating changes. And I have received support from the most unexpected places and for that I am grateful.

🧔🏻‍♂️👧🏼 As always I could not done any of this without backing from Adam my partner who was with me every step of the way and pushed me when I was ready to give up. And to Maja for her continued presence as the inspiring, hilarious light of our lives, who continues to challenge us to try and be better people.
