The Oxford & Cambridge Goat Race

The Oxford & Cambridge Goat Race 2 goats, 1 glorious race. The Oxford and Cambridge Goat Race. As always, the goats are free to follow at whatever speed suits them.

SPITALFIELDS CITY FARM (our usual venue) STATEMENT

The Oxford Cambridge Goat Race

"This is primarily a fundraising event where ticket sales support all the farm animals directly, with 2012's proceeds raising enough to cover a whole year's food bill! In recent years, we received a few complaints saying that this event is cruel to the goats, but these complaints often come from people that have ne

ver been to the event, or even visited the farm! The goats chosen to run are in good condition and health checked (foot trimmed etc) before the event. It is also worth noting that city farm goats are particularly friendly and used to visiting public and school groups, so are not phased by extra attention. The "track" is also part of their normal routine, a route their follow every day as they are let out of their exercise paddock to make their own way towards their stables. Most days they run, but some days they walk. They are encouraged by a bucket of food, but if the goats choose to 'race' at a leisurely pace, then that's fine by us. They are never, ever forced to run. On the day, specially designed lightweight coats are worn (similar to goat coats that they are accustomed to wearing in winter weather). The coats are in the Oxford/Cambridge colours to make them easily identifiable. During the day, animals are kept away from amplified music and the road is crowd controlled during the race. We welcome anyone who would like to meet the goats and the farmers at the farm, where you'll see just how well they are looked after - to five freedoms standards:

1. Freedom from Hunger and Thirst - by ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigour.

2. Freedom from Discomfort - by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area.

3. Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease - by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment.

4. Freedom to Express Normal Behaviour - by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal's own kind.

5. Freedom from Fear and Distress - by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering."

We are so sad to hear about the passing of Spitalfields City Farm resident Watson. Together with Holmes, these two were our β€œshoats of honour” and used to trot along in the warm up ’race’ every year at The Goat Race. Such a wonderful pig, he was so loved and cared for until the end and lived to a ripe old age of 10. Rest in peace, old friend x

For those kind souls who recently donated their already purchased Goat Race ticket to support Spitalfields City Farm through these difficult times, we wondered if you could help the farm maximise your generous donation.

You see, the cancelled tickets are eligible for Gift Aid, meaning we can make your donation go EVEN FURTHER!
Gift Aid is a tax relief allowing UK charities to reclaim an extra 25% in tax on every eligible donation made by a UK taxpayer.

All you have to do is fill out the form in the link below. It will not cost you any extra, it's just something that needs to be filled in by yourselves before the farm can claim the Gift Aid relief.

http://www.spitalfieldscityfarm.org/gift-aid-declaration-form-35

S pitalfields Farm are immensely grateful and really appreciate you taking the time to help them. Your contribution will help ensure the goats, and all the other 80 animals on the farm are cared for and the farm can look forward to hosting The Oxford Cambridge Goat Race in 2021! 🐐🐐

Gift Aid is reclaimed by the charity from the tax you pay for the current tax year. Your address is needed to identify you as a current UK taxpayer and will only be used for this purpose.

Happy weekend 🌈 At the Goat Race we have long been proud to support the fight for LGBTQ+ rights and always have this banner on our tracks. We celebrate everyone and we were due to launch a very special collaboration before the lockdown halted the race this year. Hopefully 2021 will see this partnership happen so I’ll keep quiet until then πŸ™Œ In the meantime, at our recent online festival we painted rainbow goats on our faces πŸ‘ŒπŸΌπŸ˜†πŸŒˆπŸ because pride is life and so are goats. WOW, what can we say. The Goat Rave was a rip roaring success and we are blown away to discover that we raised just over Β£900 for City Farm! Thank you so so SO much to everyone who donated and attended on Saturday. This was the first time we have run an online event like this and it was just brilliant seeing how much you all goat involved!!

MASSIVE thank you to everyone that made the day what it was including our fabulous host, Goatry extraordinaire and quiz master Tim Kennington, Zoe from Fold Yoga London for the hilarious and brilliant Goat Yoga class, Boutique Facepaint for the rainbow goats facepainting and matching DIY goat horns, Gerrard-Wright for the enthralling storytelling, The Goat Chelsea for making delicious GoaTEAni's, the inimitable Jay Foreman for his bad ass nonsense songs and to our incredible Goat Rave DJs The Chief Goat, DJ Lewi, Bunker Seventeen & Rich What a day! We're still smiling from all of the fun that was had and will be posting pics and video clips throughout the week. You can also now watch the DJ sets back on our Twitch page www.twitch.tv/thegoatrave

Below is the mini farm tour by Spitalfields Farm Manager Jenny that we kicked the day off with before Goat Yoga. Some of you may have missed this so we wanted to repost so you can see where your donations are going.

And for those who have been asking if they can still donate to the farm, we have opened up a new event page so that you can. All you need to do is head to https://www.thegoatrace.com and click the 'make a donation' button. This will take you to an event page where you buy a 'ticket' as your donation (this is just to donate, there are no more goat rave events)

Thanks again you awesome humans.
