🐶 Jack - Chihuahua, 4 years.

🐶 Saffy - Parsons Russell Terrier, nearly 1.5 years.

🐶 Dzhulbars (Jules) - Golden Miniature Poodle, very nearly 2 years.

🧐 All three of these wonderful little dogs had initial nervous reactions to strangers in their home - and rightly so.

💕 We devised gentle gradual plans for each and they have all responded so well. By day three they have all been super excited to see us arrive for their daily enrichment - the Dogknows way.

Welcome to Dogknows Theo

Posted • 🐾 Welcome Theo to Dogknows Central South London.

Theo is a sprightly 9 year old Norfolk Terrier.

🙏 This morning I took him on our complimentary introductory walk to give Theo the time all dogs need when walking with someone new in strange places.

🐶 Theo took it all in his stride. Relaxed on the car journey and loved exploring a new park, even going for a swim. Super friendly and polite to every dog encounter and quite playful and sprightly at times for his age!

😇 Expect to see more of Theo right here as he joins us for his daily enrichment the way.

Posted • 💫 Celebrate success

Tigger (lurcher) was on a short lead and muzzle when I first walked him 2.5 years ago.

The past year I've been working on his reactivity to unknown dogs - mostly from medium size upwards, dark and/or hairy and with a particular disliking to retrievers.

Gradually over time using positive reinforcement (praise, trust and a lot of treats) alongside patience and determination, Tiggs fears have faded into nothing.

Tigger now knows only good things happen when dogs approach - praise and treats. To a point when the 'wrong type' is clocked, Tigger will stop and turn to look at me as if to say - 'he's a big dog, do I get a treat?'
Absolutely you do Tigger!

Today was sunny and bright and I took time to watch Tigger roam freely with his old pal Max (labrador) and reflect on our success.

It’s so easy to simply set off on the same route, doing the same dog walk each day, thinking exercise is the only purpose of the walk.

As it’s 🐕WALK YOUR PET MONTH I would love you to think about making a few changes to your dog walking routine and consider mixing it up by adding some of these types of walks:

🐾How about discovering new trails for starters. Grab the local map and select new places to explore! Taking the lead places you in the pilot seat rather than your dog being on auto-pilot, perhaps repeating familiar, unwanted scenarios!

🐾Try a SNIFFARI, yes, a sniffing walk that allows your dog all the time they need to explore through their amazing sense of smell. It’s actually good for your dog, as sniffing can lower your dogs blood pressure so they relax but with tons of brain stimulation that leads to a happy and mentally tired dog. It’s a great way to decompress from the rush of daily routines.

🐾Walking your dog is also a great time to train your dog so heading out for a ‘Training Walk’, with favourite treats in hand can be a real boost. As well as the basics, developing distance cues and reinforce good returns and of course, walking on the lead without pulling!

Above all, consider your walks a time for bonding with your dog!
