We are thrilled to announce that from October 2023, Brockwell Vets became fully independent once again! The new owners are William Chandler MRCVS and Jenny Kalogera MRCVS. ous owner for the last 20 years, is indeed a familiar face at Brockwell and is proud to embark on this new chapter with William. Together, they are committed to building upon the legacy of Brockwell Vets, ensuring a seamless transition and providing consistent high-quality care for you and your beloved pets. In addition to our usual offerings, William has brought key additional services to the clinic, including advanced ultrasound (with echocardiography) and laparoscopic surgery. This means we can now offer more comprehensive diagnostics and treatment options right here at Brockwell Vets, saving you valuable time and travel. Remember Remember the 5th November πŸŽ†πŸŽ†πŸŽ†

Crazy as it is, the time of year is upon us when explosives are sold freely and used without restraint. It is a distressing time for most animals and there appears to be no end in sight for the unregulated sale of fireworks. So let us focus on what we can do (ie rant over).

There are many 'extras' that can be helpful during this time but the safest and simplest first step for is to avoid walking later in the afternoon as it starts getting dark. 'Bolting' when stressed has led to some of the more serious problems we have faced - whether it is injuries or missing dogs and cats. For the stress whilst at home there are some medical and non-medical options that can be helpful but company is the most important. Medications (Sileo, trazadone, etc) can be very soothing for those dogs really affected.

We have seen many of our regulars who need extra support during this period - but if you are worried about fireworks and need some last minute help - please reach out to our team and we can help you out.

If anyone can get those cute ear protectors to market - we will be all ears!

🐾 Attention Cat Owners! 🐾

πŸ“’ The countdown is on! πŸ“’

Starting from the 10th June, it will be mandatory for all cats over the age of 20 weeks to be microchipped. This ensures that if your beloved feline friend ever gets lost, they'll have a much higher chance of being reunited with you quickly and safely.

Why Microchip?
πŸ”Έ Safety: A microchip provides a permanent form of identification.
πŸ”Έ Peace of Mind: Helps ensure a swift return if your cat goes missing.
πŸ”Έ Legal Requirement: Comply with the latest regulations and avoid fines.

There is only one week to go! If you have any queries, or would like to get your little one booked in for a microchip, please give our friendly team a call on 020 7737 2526 or email [email protected].

A Taste of Summer β˜€οΈβ˜€οΈβ˜€οΈ

What a glorious weekend we just had. A taste of the Summer to come! I'm reminded of how important it is to adjust our pet care routines as the weather heats up. Here are a few tips to keep our animals feeling great!

Dogs πŸ•β€πŸ¦Ί
- Dogs lose most of their heat through panting and so lots of cool water to stop them drying out.
- If it’s 20 degrees or below, you should be fine for normal activity. Anything above, and it’s time to chill inside until it cools down.
- Keep them out of the sun where possible - these darker coats absorb heat quick!
- Remember that older dogs, puppies, overweight dogs and those with flatter faces 'brachycephalic' will inevitably struggle more during the heat so please maintain extra caution.

Cats πŸˆπŸˆβ€β¬›
- Open windows are a tempting space for cats - do not let your cat be a victim of a slip and a fall from a height - get those windows secured.
- Cats love to sunbathe - outdoor cars can usually find a cooler spot when they need, indoor cats need somewhere cooler to go too. If your flat heats up in the day try closing blinds / curtains to limit sun exposure.
- Older cats often dehydrate quickly - particularly those with kidney changes and it is super important to keep them really well hydrated - consider adding more water to the food or even getting a fountain to encourage them to drink
- Open sheds are a tempting spot to hide in the day, when those sheds close, so does the escape route! Please check these spots first in your neighbourhood if the cat is not home for dinner!

Rabbits 🐰
- Rabbit runs can get really warm so it is important to make sure yours is ready for the sun.
- Flystrike is a common problem that can thankfully be prevented with good routine care - good diet & hygiene primarily and check their bums and bellies twice a day
- Water - having plenty available is not always enough, have a couple available for each rabbit and keep them in the shade ideally (the metal drinkers can get hot in the sun)

If you have any questions or concerns then give us a call to speak to our friendly reception team on 02077372526 or email [email protected]

🐾🌷 Keep Your Furry Friends Safe this Easter! 🌷🐾

As Easter approaches, let's make sure our beloved pets stay happy and healthy. Here are some friendly reminders from your pals at Brockwell Vets to keep the festivities pet-friendly:

🍫 Choc-no-go Zone: Chocolate goodies might be tempting for us, but they're a big no-no for pets! Keep all Easter treats out of paw's reach to avoid potential chocolate toxicity.

🌷 Lilies are Lovely, but Deadly: Those beautiful Easter lilies may be a sight for sore eyes, but they can be harmful to our feline friends. Opt for pet-safe flowers or decorations to keep the celebration hazard-free.

πŸ₯š Egg-citing but Beware: Easter egg hunts are a blast, but make sure to collect all the eggs afterward. Pets might mistake them for a tasty treat, and plastic or foil can pose a choking risk.

🧼 Hoppy Hygiene: Be cautious with Easter grass and plastic wrap! These can be intriguing to pets but are dangerous if ingested. Stick to pet-safe toys and treats for playtime.

🏑 Quiet Time for Your Pets: Easter gatherings can be overwhelming for our four-legged buddies. Create a cosy retreat with their favourite toys and blankets to help them relax away from the hustle and bustle.

Wishing you and your pets a safe and joyous Easter! 🌷🐣🐾 πŸ°πŸ’™

🌱 Protecting Our Pets and the Environment: A Message from Brockwell Vets 🌍

At Brockwell Vets, we're not only committed to the health and well-being of animals but also to the health of our environment. There have been some recent concerns raised about the potential environmental impact of topical parasitic treatments (spot-ons) and we would like to address them.

A recent article in the Guardian highlighted that spot-on treatments and their residues may persist longer than expected on an animals coat and even the owner's hands. While topical treatments are effective in controlling parasites, they may also pose risks to non-target organisms if not used properly.

As an independent veterinary clinic, we strive to provide informed and unbiased recommendations to our clients. We want to reassure you that parasitic treatments administered orally, such as Credelio for cats or NexGard Spectra for dogs (amongst others), are viable alternatives that can provide effective protection for your pets whilst having minimal environmental impact. There may however be no alternative for your pet and in that case a spot-on treatment should be applied when appropriate whilst carefully following the label instructions.

So if you're concerned and would like to try oral therapies a go then please contact us. We understand that every pet is unique, and we're here to help you make informed decisions about the healthcare of you pet. If you have any further questions or concerns about parasite control please don't hesitate to reach out.
